Having read this post, I realised there were a few tweaks I'd love to try out with my grid hotkeys. Have decided to make use of customised positions for some of the grid positions (notably z and x being switched around to the g, h area) So far it seems against computer that my spellcasting has become a little quicker, although that's only the times when I don't automatically hit z or x from habit...

I find that grid solution was on the right track by having all the hotkeys centralized. The problem with grid is that it is too rigid as the layout is far from optimal. Once you change a few things it starts to make sense to completely revamp the setup as it can be much improved.

I never understood why people believe that having to not move your fingers very far makes you more efficient. Maybe I just have big hands, but I find moving my fingers to hit a bunch of tiny cramped nearby keys to be difficult and uncomfortable.

It only makes sense that if your hotkeys are closer together you will be more efficient. Hitting 1,P to build probes is obviously less efficient than hitting 1,2.

As for cramping your hotkeys. This is a very good point! You really want to take some time and figure out what key combinations work best for you. This is why I like using the Spacebar for attack along with Caps Lock as a control group. These keys are optimally placed and larger than normal so they are super easy to use

I can see the benefits of using spacebar as attack. But I can't kick the habit of using A in my layout. And for me ASDF is mapped to basic unit controls so I like them all together. A-attack, S-stop, D-hold, F-patrol

I can't see using caplocks for anything. I always think it'll lead to some strange chat situations.

I'll definitely try this! However, I would recommend setting burrow/unburrow to separate hotkeys. Makes micro easier and leads to less stupid mistakes, like unburrowing 20 roaches right in front of a bunch of siege tanks...yes I've done this.

hitting 1 P is really inefficient but hitting 1E 1R 1T isn't inefficient at all and I would argue much better since 1 and 2 are horizontal and close together so finger slipping is a huge possibility. Your hand isn't small and each one of your fingers rotates so i don't know why you're so against keys on a diagonal / far away (keys on a diagonal also have the added benefit of being hard to slip)

in the end hotkey set ups are highly highly personal so if it works for you thats fine but for me personally I think its pretty bad. Ex. s I find trying to macro protoss robo units really really hard with your set up as opposed to my set up of #3 and then hitting either mouse button 4 / 5 / mousewheel up / mousewheel down. Like I have no idea how you would even chronoboost a structure but it would be killer annoying for me personally, maybe your hand works differently.

but if it works for you i'm not going to say its bad, but I hope you stop using the words "natural" or "optimized" as its an objective statement. its subjective, everyone's brain / anatomy works differently.

edit - space bar for attack is a good idea for me imo ^>^
hihihi

Shurafa, I definitely like the concept here.

But I got to thinking, wouldn't it be better to place your macro hotkeys across a horizontal plane to help with macro tapping?

E.g. instead of 1,q,a,z -> 1,2,3,4.
I'm in a world of hurt!

I think 1,2,3,4 can definitely be used for production effectively. However what would you use for your unit commands (stop, hold, patrol, move?). These keys cannot be the same as those used for production. Figuring this out has been the hardest part of optimizing a hotkey layout for my style of play.

Give it a try and let us know how it goes for you!

@Shurafa: I just setup a scheme using Caps, A, S, D as the Macro line. The stop, hold patrol, move are the row below i.e. z, x, c etc. Going to give it a whirl for a few week and see how it goes.

its sounds a very thought through hotkey setup , I defenetly will try it out.

bat i have a few issuse with it.
I use the Space as "camera view of basses" , and i use it mach more then the camera keys "F1-5" .
bat now with the Attack using Space i dont know where to put the camera basses view

also how do you use the unit controls,
` - for scouts and upgreads
caps lock - for your main army?
mouse 4,5 - ??

You can use a (control, alt or shift) modifier for the Spacebar. I use Alt+Spacebar for idle workers. You can change "camera view of bases" to Alt+Spacebar. Some people also like to just click on the minimap for this.

I am using ~ for my scout (next to the 1 key).
My Main army is Mouse button 4,5 which is supplemented by Caps Lock for casters and ~ if I ever need a 4th group (example bio = mouse 4, tanks = mouse 5, banshee 1 = Caps Lock, banshee 2 = ~).
G is control group 5 and is a research building such as the cybernetics core so I can keep an eye on my warp gates tech.

Feedback: The mouse keys seem to really flow as hotkeys. Its seems like a natural fit. Ironically they have been the hardest thing for me to get used to. Decades of RTS play have so ingrained the 1a2a3a keys into my brain that it has been hard to adjust to using a mouse button for this. Granted its only been a few weeks though. Lets see how I feel about it in a month or two.

I play toss so i made Q as warp-gates , and now i have an extra control group
I really like the idea of mouse 4,5 for the army its an new and interesting way to play.
1 more question Shurafa, what kind of mouse you use?
