too bad, after he was going to tell me he didn't care about religion (obviously slighting my compliment to him) I was going to kindly wish him to go to hell.

I didn't want to read through five pages of stupid. I didn't miss the mark what the fuck are you talking about? Is there some DEEPER IDEOLOGICAL MEANING in a teamliquid blog post that I'm not seeing(rhetorical)?

It's nearly 7 pages of agreement that your synonymous thinking is equally as poor as the OP's. Hey, news flash, I'm Swiss. Joke's on you for implying a stereotype and missing the mark again.

Saying thank you when someone compliments you is not being forced to tip toe around religion. It is manners. They are not forcing a religious debate on you when they say God Bless and there is no reason to go "mmhmm i don't care about god so gtfo old lady" unless you are an immature aggressive retard who is just looking for argument where there isn't any.
But you wouldn't know that because there is no way you could have missed the mark after skipping every page of the thread right?
That geographical ad hominem at the end makes it so much better considering where you are from. Icing.

The Swiss thing makes a lot more sense. Also, your Monopoly reference(as corny as it was) would have had a more resounding "kapow" if you did not use the contraction.

Joke's on you, I'm American as well. Yes, I have three citzenships and passports and I am of 5 nationalities and grew up with two religions on my belt.
I just enjoy toying with your poor attempt to try and classify me because in most cases, it's wrong because I am multi-cultural and knowledgeable in several religions as a child. Additionally, you just presume without actually specifying what exactly "makes sense". So laughable and painful to read as it reveals very little about me, but tells everyone a whole lot about you, unfortunate things.
All this is telling me is 1. You have nothing to say and 2. Your cheap antics shows how pale your intelligence is.
Best of luck.

I think there are some pretty crazy things getting said in this thread (i'm looking at you, person who analogized the old lady's compliment to someone calling their cashier a n*****).
What this thread boils down to is a simple question:

So I heard about people getting fired for no reason, what are some ways that I can make sure I wont be this guy? It consequently boils down a simple answer: be polite to the customers even if you find them offensive.

Why are you posting in a thread if you're not going to read it first?

Damn, someone already reported him ): Yeah, it's odd how arrogant he's being, yet is now reading the replies to his post (which was originally one).

Evidently the only thing that could save this thread from being 100% stupid was his input. I'm just glad he saw fit to share his enlightenment with the rest of us.

I'm actually pretty surprised people even find the comment "God bless you" to even carry much religious connotation in every day speech. I mean, even the extremely socially conditioned reactionary "bless you" that one says when someone nearby sneezes certainly has its etymology rooted in Christianity... but no one says "bless you" to someone who just sneezed as a form of religious ritual.
In the winter holidays, when someone says "merry christmas" to you, do you reply with "yeah, I don't care about religion"? This is pretty much just nonsense. You'd have to create language and culture completely anew if you're so anal about the slightest religious connotations.

Sounds an awful lot like me when I was 15 or someshit, edgy and rebellious as I was... Eh, "God bless you" isn't a term used here but if it was I'd reply with a very simple "and you". No, I don't give two shits about religion but that doesn't mean I have to be impolite in response to him/her being polite. "God bless you" doesn't mean "CONVERT YOU HERETIC" after all.

When someone says "god bless you" sometimes I'll reply "Gesundheit" even when nobody sneezed.

lol
If OP's situation took place in his country, then in fact they (we) dont have any slightest religious connotations. And what that lady said is actually quite not regular. That's why he make such a big deal. And once again "hmm" its a normal responce here to whatever some random stranger tell you. (and btw here, the customer is the one who shoudn't be rude or acting weird, well not kinda apply to this situation with lady and her "good intention") It's just OP overreacting.

I definitely am one for individual choices and beliefs regarding religion.
But I feel this was kind of untactful from your part. As an employee, you should be respecting the views of your customers, and give them a lot more leeway than you would in normal situations. Especially in a case like this, where the lady said something that was saying something kind to you, I think it was really uncalled for you to call her out on what she said like that.
I can definitely understand that you don't like having your beliefs encroached upon - I personally hate it when I have evangelists come knocking on my door and preaching to me in my own house. But the lady was being nice to you, and she wasn't trying to convert you or anything! For the lady, she was making a nice comment to you! Honestly, I think that was the biggest factor - she gave you a genuine compliment, and got a rude response in return! I'd be pretty mad if I told somebody something like, "You are a great person" and they give me some mean comment about it. I doubt it was her intent to get you to change your religious beliefs or something.... it was just to say something nice to you. So her response was perfectly justified.
