Wtf... So today I was at my job working. I'm a cashier so I have to talk quite a bit while I work.
So this middle aged lady comes with who I assume is her husband and orders her food. As she was about to leave she said "god bless you, you're a mighty fine boy working at such a young age."
I replied with a "mhmm" and the lady lashed out at me. She said "what's the matter?"
Okay, lets go back a bit before I go on. I don't care about religion, being an atheist, or any of that. I don't really care when I die and where I go as long as I can have kids and die happy.
Anyways, I proceeded to tell her that I don't care about religion, making it short as possible because I don't really want to know her opinion and thoughts about it. She told me I should go to hell.. WTF? and that I should be ashamed of myself.
Does anyone else get this type of shit?

Simple thing is to just shrug it off and be polite, instead of pulling the "mhmm". I understand how it could get under your skin, but I'd assume when you're working getting into a theological discussion isn't really the best idea. It sucks that she went off like that, and it'd probably piss me off too, but you had the power to avoid that point.

I'm an agnostic myself and if someone said that to me i would just say thanks and let them go on there merry way. No need to instigate.

religion will never, EVER make sense to people with actual self aware questioning minds. I even got to live in Utah....if you think regular Christians care about their religion...you have never met a Mormon family.

When an atheist voices his/her view on religion, the atheist is stomping on the religious person's freedom of religion.
When a religious person voices his/her view on religion, he/she is practicing his/her freedom of religion and freedom of expression.

What's with your attitude? A nice lady gives you a compliment and you just shrug it off like that? Just because you don't believe in the same things as her gives you no right to disrespect her like that.
And if you don't think "mhmm" is a disrespectful response, that's a whole nother story.

Honestly there are worse things that someone could say than "god bless you".
If all religious people do were telling god to bless people I'd be a lot less worried about the world.

Seriously, though, just say thank you. It's part of good customer service--you're there to be a cashier, not to insinuate argument.

When I worked as a cashier and received any religious comments, I feigned interest and depending on the circumstance also humored them by pretending I was religious as well. As an atheist, I don't have a problem with that, as I understand that some people take their religion very seriously and I would rather avoid confrontation.
On topic of your story, however, you were also rude to the lady. Although I think she should respect that maybe you don't want her God's blessings, "mhmm" is definitely disrespectful.

Religion aside, that was quite the compliment she gave you. 'Mhmm' seems inconsiderate and rude, and could be easily taken as a 'Yeah whatever'. Thanking her simply would have been the appropriate and reasonable response. Heck, the religious aspect of this is hardly a big deal at all, for either side.
