Yup, you were a jerk. Everyone else is right. The thing is, a lot of people seem to think that only religious people can be obnoxious about their beliefs. That's not true! Sometimes, people who don't believe in anything can be even more obnoxious about religion. Why the hell would you explain to this woman why you don't care about her beliefs? It's rude. Suck it up and be nice.

News Flash: I don't even think she cares. If you didn't care about religion at all, then you would have nodded, said your thanks and moved the fuck on.
Here's why you care that people establish the fact that you care about religion:
1. You "mhm"'ed her 2. You proceeded to tell her that you didn't care about religion besides it being none of her business and of little importance since you don't even know who she is and she doesn't care who the fuck you are. and 3. Because you wrote a whole blog about it hoping others had similar anecdotes to share about a similar situation.
Unfortunately, all the other atheists out there know to close their trap and just be polite like she was.

Right, she clearly intended through her innocuous remark of "what's the matter" to have a brief lecture on your own religious views to be delivered to her as she pays a boy for her food or whatever it is you do.

Why did you feel the need to say that you don't care about religion? You could have said that you appreciated the comment and that was it.
I think you do care champ.
|
Think of it this way.
She wasn't trying to impose her beliefs onto you, she gave you a compliment in the way that's usual for her, which was to praise you with God's word. She was showing her appreciation for your hard work. Just as someone would say "God bless you" after you sneeze, it's not shoving God down your throat, but a polite idiom.
|
So you say you don't care about religion, which you obviously do since you can take any offense by a comment like "god bless you". I agree that it is complete bullshit to go around saying that to people - pretty much anything that "flashes" one's religion in public. But that doesn't give you the right to be dick towards an old lady, no matter how stupid she might be in your eyes. Personally, I care a lot about religion, but I don't go around flashing my atheist flag whereever the fuck I go. Pick your spots to discuss that kind of stuff and all the other time just roll with it.
|
Sounds like you have really bad social skills, dude. Saying you wanted out of the conversation isn't an excuse and probably implicates you further. You should have know what you said would have gotten the reaction that you got.
If you wanted out of the conversation and you had social skills you would have said, "Thank you, I hope you have a good day today."
|
Giving her, what I imagine was, a cynical, "mmhmm" is quite rude regardless. You work at a food service establishment. You need to make the customers happy.

On March 17 2011 15:22 Gak2 wrote: just say thank you instead of "mmhmm"... it's like someone saying "bless you" after you sneeze. Even if some people still actually mean it in the religious sense like this lady, pretty much all religious connotation that it's associated with is out the window... it's just a courtesy convention.
it does seem this lady overreacted though... maybe not if you spoke to her in a condescending manner but if you didn't then whatever, ignore her and move on.
I was actually going to touch on this in my post. While it's obvious this lady was saying it because she believes in god, I find that quite a lot of people use religious phrases without even meaning it. Sayings such as "I swear to god" or "god, please let..." and so on. If it's something you grow up with, whether you believe or not, it can become a habit.
I'm an atheist, but I was taught that it was polite to say "bless you" after someone sneezes. I wasn't taught it with a religious meaning behind it, just that it was the polite thing to say. I still say it to this day, but I modified the pronunciation when I was 10 or 11 (or may have just always thought of it this way) to "blesh you."
lol you're wrong. she asked me and i told her why, I was just trying to get out of the conversation.
"Sorry, I'm having a rough day. Thanks for the compliment."
