Maybe not true, but at least I can justify the logic in my head as opposed to the current things GOM are saying.
You don't think they hired Kelly indefinitely, but backed off and brought Moletrap in once the community blew up over it? And are now using the bit about trial casters to make Kelly's departure look better for both GOM and Kelly?
It's certainly possible and does make more sense. I'm modifying the theory!
GOM Evil Theory rev. 2.1: 1. GOM puts out a call for casters and reviews all applicants 2. GOM focuses on availability moreso than ability. 3. Kelly is the most available and is hired immediately and openly. 4. DoA is also hired but requires a month due to real life. 5. Kelly has largely negative feedback. 6. GOM announces the "trial" and contacts Moletrap. 7. Moletrap announces he will go to Korea. 8. The trial period ends.
What do you think? BTW I've been playing a lot of Phoenix Wright hahaha.
Yep, I like that theory very much. It's the simplest one that explains everything I know about the situation (is consistent with the statements from GOM and Kelly I've read).
Edit: this theory is busted by the February 24 interview now linked in the OP.

Actually I remember Wolf ( another applicant ) saying "Just wait guys , just wait..." in one of the first Kelly Hate Threads. Wolf joined FXO after that so I don't know if it really means something but still , you may wanna include that to your theory.
I'm sad to see her go. Having a new face around was nice, I never had even the slightest difficulty understanding her, and while her comments weren't always spot on, I've seen much worse commenting from people that work off of replays and don't even do it live. She was always upbeat and happy in the replayed that I watched of her, and seemed excited to be there.
I'm actually a little surprised so many seemed to have trouble understanding her. I'm from North America (Canada to be precise) and don't know any 2nd languages (besides a few words of French), so it is not like there is a reason I should be able to understand her better than anyone else.
Anyways, best of luck with whatever you do next, Kelly!

Also talks with GOM seem to favour the theory of point #2.
Hm looks like it was not the right choice for her going to korera and cast CodeA. For me personally its a right choice because i was not that hyped all the time she casted.... i guess its personal but her voice was not too smooth.
Ok I'm sure she's a very nice and intelligent lady, but if she's going to be casting on the english stream then her english needs to be better. They need people without really heavy foreign accents. Again I'm not ripping on her at all. It's just kind of like putting Tastless on the Korean stream lol. They would all freak out because no one would be able to understand him.

5. Then when we're all distracted with this debacle, they could go back in time. From there they could fake the moon landing. 6. After that, they went to area 51 where they had scheduled first contact with aliens who were going to congratulate us on our moon landing. 7. They stole the alien technology and hid all evidence. 8. They used the alien cloaking field to shoot JFK from the grassy knoll. 9. They mind controlled the president to plan 9/11
In all seriousness though, I don't think we ever will know the truth, but I'm more concerned about the outcome. I was one of the people that actually liked Kelly
As an additional note... this is not a problem unique to e-sports by any measure. In the last few years the F1 commentary in the UK switched over from ITV (channel 3) to the BBC. The BBC hired one of the ITV commentators Martin Brundle (an ex-f1 driver, so very analytical and artosis-like, a joy to listen to). But they also brought in one of their own sports commentators Jonathan Legard to be the excitment-generator "play-by-play" guy. and literally from the first race, people hated Jonathan. The F1 crowd is a littler older on average than the e-sports crowd I think, so there wasn't QUITE as much spit and frothing at the mouth, but it was still pretty ugly the insults that got thrown in his direction.
Now the difference is, he had a contract. So the BBC couldn't just get rid of him, but I imagine his contract ended last year because they recently announced that Legard would no longer be commentating this coming season, and they've bought in another ex-driver and fan favourite David Coulthard.
A bad commentator can ruin the experience for people. There's no escaping that fact.
What I'm confused here is, are people defending her of her casting or are they defending her because people are criticizing/flaming her. Because if you're just defender her on basis of people flaming her, then go right ahead, but if you're actually defending her casting, you should really reevaluate what you consider to be a good caster.
In terms of raw casting abilities, she's just not up to par for a paid product. Not saying that she should be as good as Tasteless or Artosis, but there's a degree of expectation when you're hired to cast one of the biggest SC2 tourneys in the world, even if it's "just code A".

My feelings exactly. I don't think kelly and other ppl should take this personally, it's just part of the industry she's decided to step in. On a personal level, i'm sure I would have nothing against kelly, she is after all a SC gamer and seems to be a good person, but on a professional level - I really dislike her casting and don't see why GOM shouldn't make a business decision to replace her with another semi-unknown caster that can do a better job. I mean DOA is an example of that - very pleasant to listen to- and there are other ppl that are unknown to me, like moletrap, that seem to have excellent potential too.
Don't take it personal Kelly. The demand just wasn't there and it makes sense to give the audience what they want.

Kelly said that she was only staying in Korea until the 17th of March. It definitely does seem to be a pre-planned decision based on the availability of their applicants for these trials.
edit: LOL, I don't know how to emb Youtube videos. Feel like a noob. edit2: nvm. Figured it out.
Yup, more people need to watch this video @2:25. The 1-season long "trial" had been planned even before she got to South Korea. It just wasn't made public by GOM until now.
I don't know why some people say they feel ashamed of our community.... I mean people voiced their opinion, I'm sure kelly is a nice person and all, but as a caster she was pretty bad in my opinion, she still has a lot of work to do
no need to feel sorry for her, people lose jobs everyday, it is only going to make her work harder and hopefully come back and actually be a good caster
On one hand, I wasn't the biggest fan of her casting, but the way folks went about it was nothing short of disgusting. Hopefully she'll do well in the future. :|
On March 10 2011 05:14 Termit wrote: Really, she isnt that good of a caster. Some people are just not ment to be casters and Kellys high pitched voice is not a good caster voice. But if she still wanna be a professional caster she should: 1. Take voice lessons. 2. Get a neutral accent. 3. Learn how to pronounce units correctly, "the race cars"... cmon.
It's also nice in a way that people give her some shit because to many females has it to easy in esports just because they are girls.
Once you're older than 15 your accent in a second or third language sticks with you. If you are younger you will get rid of it or learn to speak the language without the accent, once you are past that age any language you learn will have an accent. "Get a neutral accent" by far the dumbest most ignorant thing I have seen in a while.
Dude, are you dumb? Why do you think every sports caster has the same accent, because they come from the same pond? No because they learn how to get rid of there horrible accent. Just because you're over 15 years old and doesn't have english as your native language it isn't impossible to remove your accent. Haha...
You shouldn't call someone dumb and then reply with a post full of grammatical errors. That simply points out that you're an idiot well before you even have the chance to confirm that you're an idiot through the idiotic point you try to make.
When people are past a certain age, and have to learn a new language, they will retain an accent.
Sportscasters don't have to learn a new language, unless you know of a sports station that's crawling with non-native speakers? You can learn to alter your inflection/tone of voice, but you can't beat an accent in most cases.
Unfortunately, the Asian accent is not super appealing...not really much she can do about that.
ps: So when is Total Buscuit coming over? Or is he too high profile to do code A's?
Where did I call him dumb? I just asked if he was. Also english isn't my native language so why would I have perfect grammar? The funny part is that you can't see that I asked him a question on your native language. Also, Singapore speak english so I don't see how she has to learn new language lol.
On March 10 2011 05:09 No_Roo wrote: Just a point on people citing her thick accent and comparing it to other think accents: The distinction to be made with kelly is not just the way the words coming out of her mouth sound, or the value of those words, it's more about the dropped words and combined words. Her spoken sentence structure is extremely difficult to parse _quickly_ due to verb conjugation issues and missing or improper articles etc.
You can test this by transcribing to plain text what she is saying, then reading the text (removing the accent from the equation).
Any way, again, best of luck to her, I am however looking forward to meeting the new caster for next season.
Actually, it's not hard at all to understand what she means. You people need to be around non-whites more often lol
You need to realize not many people are native english-speakers. I have talked English on skype etc. numerous times and needed to fully concentrate to understand what she was saying and it was really hindering the watching experience.
