Hey everybody, coL.Ryan here, some of you may know me as the featured Protoss streamer "RyanRushia"
As you may have seen I stream on UStream.TV, and recieved an e-mail from them today saying that I had been picked to be a part of their new "Pay Per View" (PPV) where I could charge someone to buy a e-ticket to watch for a certain period of time. Obviously, I would never do this for general streaming, but with a huge influx of people requesting lessons, I wanted to throw this poll/question out to the public.
My idea would be to charge people like... 5$ for a 2-4 hour Event on my stream and do a Coaching session broadcasted to whoever wanted. I know this negates the individualized aspect of a lesson, but considering I charge 20$ an hour for lessons, which is quite cheaper than you'd find at gosucoaching or from root gaming, dunno what EU does for lessons so you'll have to exucse me there.
Basically, instead of paying 40-80$ for a 2-4 hour individualized lesson, you'd pay 5$ for me preparing replays, talks, bring in some people for custom games, and so on, as well as a 30 min-1 hour long sit-down Q and A with me at the end. Again, this is still hypothetical and I'm just trying to see if there would be an community interest in it.
Thanks everyone!
Poll: Would you ever pay 5$ for a broadcasted 2-4 hour lesson? No (45) 67% Yes (18) 27% Would have to think more about it. (4) 6% 67 total votes Your vote: Would you ever pay 5$ for a broadcasted 2-4 hour lesson? (Vote): Yes (Vote): No (Vote): Would have to think more about it.
Any suggestions/advice/criticism on this would be greatly appreciated!

GG Ryan! All the best. Have always appreciated your play style!

$5 is super cheap. I have no idea why someone would not want to do this. Sounds like a good idea. glhf with it :O
|
You'll probably have to do a free one first, give people a sample of what they'd be getting.
|
@ mucker: yea i could certainly do that, it wouldn't perhaps be as long as a full event but i for sure could thanks for the advice!
|
i think its a very legitimate idea, but personally im not interested in coaching.
|
I think 2-4 hours is a little long for a coaching session that is more time than some people play straight ladder. Also $2 an hour is really generous, you could probably not charge and ask for donations to make more.
Th $5 is probably just so you don't get swamped but just do a contest to give away coaching. There are low level tournaments around that I'm sure you could just add yourself to the prize.

This is a good idea. Start charging 30-50 an hour for lessons so private lessons are a bit more exclusive. The people that can't afford that can pay the 5 bucks to watch the group lesson. I would pay 30-50 for a private lesson, I think your skill level is totally worth that amount.

I'm actually really surprised at the poll results. On one hand, $5 is really cheap for such a thing, and being able to pay to watch analysis of a certain thing would be pretty cool. On the other hand, Day9 does this regularly and does it for free.
I'd pay to watch, but only if the topic was something I really needed to work on.
|
I'd pay $50 just to speak to Ryan for 30 minutes.
|
Hey ryan, I think this is a pretty clever idea.
|
I would personally not pay $5. First of all, I play Terran, and second of all, there are way too many free alternatives to paying $5 for this. Hell, I'm too cheap for the $5 for GSTL. I don't want to discourage you or anyone considering to go into PPV though, because I definitely think there are a couple of people who would pay that would make producing premium content worth it.
|
I also think this is a good idea although it may need some tweaking with the actual setup and cost.
|
Considering its 5 dollars for GSTL or 15 dollars for GSL Premium, or we can get free coaching type of vods from MrBitter or a bevy of other streamers, I actually think this idea will fail pretty badly. It's a unique idea but it could hurt your image more than you'd want.

Honestly, I've never been particularly interested in getting coached, but I would possibly be interested in paying the prices for some sort of like interactive streamed session with you. Like you stream, but me and a couple other guys paying play public 4's with you, or 2v2s, or just mess around doin different game types or whatever, just for fun, but also for the experience of hundreds of people watching. I dunno, I think plenty of people will go for the coaching idea as well, basically cuz everyone <3's Ryan :D

Wow, haters gonna hate. If people want to do this, Ryan is giving them the opportunity. If not, nobody is forced to. Why even take time out of your life to post here if you aren't interested. Seriously some just seem to be miserable and want to make everyone else miserable.
|
What you described is mostly what Day(9) does for free. But yeah I can't blame you, we all need to make some money bro. I personally would not pay, but I still hope it works out for you.

He is asking for opinions, I don't see anyone really flaming him. Much better for him to know the interest now than to waste time planning and have it be a flop.
