THIS IS NOT A BRAG POST, I'm wondering why the hell I'm in Master League.
When SC2 first came out, I played it almost 5-6 hours a day (oh, how I yearn for summer again). Because it was a new game and I had played the beta, I was able to get decently high in my diamond division. This came as no surprise to me, however I knew that soon I would get outpaced because I was only C- max in ICCUP. Then, school and life took over and I was lucky to play SC2 at all.
Whenever I did play, I found that I was terribly out of touch with the new builds. Luckily, I could macro my way through most of these games anyways (enemy is doing cutesy raven play or roach rushes, I make 30 stalkers and walk over him). However, I found myself dropping in the diamond ranks and honestly, I did not really care. It was good, I thought, that I am starting to become a worse player as time goes on because this shows that the game is maturing.
I played a bit today, lost three games in a row but finally beat a Zerg player with the most bizarre build (fast expand into roach rush) and I pretty easily won. I was rank 43 diamond with around 1400 bonus pool . To my surprise, it told me I was promoted to Master League.
What? I am certainly no master, I was barely a middling Diamond player. So now I'm thoroughly confused and probably going to get owned every time I play. I wish that Blizzard would make a true "top league" instead of promoting people who are in the 40s. Granted, my W/L ratio hovers around 1.2, so my secret score might be very high, but I still should not be able to get to master's without a decent commitment of time.
Anybody else feel this way? Sorry about the rambling post but I felt this was better than a short OP.

You're C- iccup. You're already the sc2 equivalent of god level
|
I think you are underestimating how good a C- iccup player is compared everyone else. The blizzard ranking system isn't perfect, but it is pretty damn good. If you aren't good enough to be in masters, it will demote you. The system works pretty well.
Your complaint is more that you want an even more elite league, which should be on the way with the Grand Masters league.

Oh well, at least the pro level has some amazing players evolving. I doubt I could take a game off of Jinro or Idra without some wacky cheese.

Maybe there should be a post made for all the blogs like this, getting tired of seeing them ~_~ I'll tell you what I've gotten from all the threads, though:
When you get promoted, it doesn't just look at all your recent games, but at everything at a larger scale. When the patch was released, they noted that all your bonus pool points would be carried over. This obviously includes all the games you've played in the past howeverlong.
So, that being said, if you were doing quite well before the patch, then all that would add up into getting promoted, since you couldn't get promoted past diamond before, right?
This is what I've gathered from everything I've read o_o

It's funny how all the BW players who are modest and GM are like "wtf bbq! I'm kicking ass and taking names in SC2" while new players from like WC3 for example tend to rage and suck at the game.
|
Yeah you have to keep in mind that a C- BW player had a huge leg up on all the new players coming in to SC2.
|
Master's League is equivalent to a D+ probably. So half the ppl on TL should be able to achieve it.
|
Master's League = D+ at best, maybe C- if you were protoss in bw.
I bet you half the the top200 list wouldn't make it past B- on iccup today, look at amazing players like CombatEX, Piqliq, Katari, the entire GMMA clan "dominating" ladder, but they would never win a starcraft tournament against real pros like Nony or Ret. Just about everyone thinks that blizz ladder is a joke, partly because of maps and partly because its a cheese/allinfest at ALL levels.
|
C- is still worth something? Hmm, maybe I should go ladder
|
I think people underestimate the amount of people that play sc2 as compared to bw just before sc2 hit the stores. Since many more people play sc2, the 'top' is bigger as well, has to contain so many more players. Imagine iccup rank as the whole alphabet. You were C- out of A-Z. That's pretty much on top.

GSL is in reach for you.

haha. think of this, if there were an iccup ladder where you took out all the koreans, how high would you have been on it? i remember people saying that ~80% of iccup people were in D, that's including koreans..

If it promoted you your mmr is obviously high enough. If you don't deserve it it will demote you. Most people who played SCBW and got to C- are high diamond or masters so I wouldn't be so shocked in disbelief if I were you.

These things make me annoyed, I started in silver league when the game was released work all the way up to diamond and then when I play my first match I win and I don't get promoted. I was hovering 2600-2700 level of diamond vs 3000 diamonds and I STILL didn't get promoted. All this league does make people annoyed and other people happy and people who have won almost no games are in there yet people (like me) who have played over 600 games and are also better players dont get promoted. I honestly just hate master league and in my opinion it shouldn't be based off MMR and Points rather then selecting players who deserve to be there. Edit: Also posts like these are just freaking annyoing to be told 'Hey you're not masters I shouldn't be in this IMO but I am so I'm happy'

Yea what you have to understand is that C- on iCCup is still in the top 20% of all iCCup players I believe, huge majority of iCCup was D+ and lower. And then when you think about the fact that all these people playing SC2 are new and don't have the experience and knowledge gained by those of us more die hard fans that actually watched pro BW and played iCCup, Only top 2% of the server gets into masters, but basically Diamond (about top 20%) was made up of mostly people who even played on iCCup, So if you were better than 80% of people on iCCup then you also are better than 80% of diamond players, which means you should be high diamond or low masters.
And Zerglot,
I have only played just over 200 games, I don't play much and had over 1000 points in my bonus pool. I was about 1500 points in diamond when being promoted to masters. This league is based on skill and beating people of masters level skill, just because you play more games it doesn't mean you DESERVE to be in masters. That's like saying Ret doesn't deserve to be there cuz he has less games than me even though he has a ridiculous W:L ratio. Points mean nothing basically in SC2, So just because you have a lot it doesn't mean you are better.
|
If you're in the C ranks at all by anything other than cheesing your way there you easily are one of the most skilled players in SC2. There's plenty of people in the top 200 who are probably D/D+ iccup players. It's a joke.

To that last comment I am beating master league opponents and yet still am not moving up
