So, I've had some issues with the changing landscape of TL. It has nothing to do with the new layout (I love it)... instead it has to do with the community as a whole.
There are so many ridiculous posts that honestly make me wonder where the intelligence in this forum went. I got to page 3 of the "No health insurance - woman shoots self" thread and thought to myself, why am I reading this nonsense?
While I've had those moments in the past, its becoming more and more frequent.
Is it because of the influx of new TL members?
Is it because I'm getting older while the average age of a TL member probably hovers around 18 indefinitely?
I'm not trying to sound holier than thou, or pretend that I'm much more mature than everyone here... I suppose I've just noticed a trend that I wish I hadn't noticed.
/end rant
P.S. I'm 26.

It's the you getting older and TL staying the same answer.
I'm curious what sort of threads you think used to populate this place?
|
I just think its the new members that come from other gaming forums, and lets face it most gaming forums are 14y.o. shouting boring memes at eachother. they're just not used to having to put some thought behind their posts. The.... lack of knowledge about TL and how you post has always been there but since there has been such a large number of new users its more visible now then it was before.

Starcraft 2 came, and with it came an influx of WoW players who dont respect anyone or anything, and jsut needlessly troll and use QQ all the time.
Back when SC2 hadnt even been thought of except in our dreams, TL was a wonderful place full of bans on horrible posters and what have you
note : i am 18

The problem is three-fold: - You are aging and your tastes are changing - You are well above the average age at TL - You are remembering the past through nostalgic, rosy glasses
Old TL is much worse than new TL. Modern TL users address each other more respectfully and the forum is moderated better; You are just remembering it how you remember it and not how it actually was.

Plus, old TL had no BiggerT

Well, I think the quality of posts from the new posters who joined this year for SC2 is generally quite a bit lower. There's a lot more trolling, internet lulz and just stupid posts these days. All things said, TL is still a great community.

But still filled with people who love to kiss mod's asses.
Despite my low post count, I've actually been around since mid-2000's or so, and other than the influx of new posters (which isn't normal but it's sc2 so hey) there hasn't really been that big a change imo. But hey, I'm not a real active member so my view is just "in general."

This is the most tame forum I've ever been to.

If that's the case....then I have no idea what kind of forums you've been to.
Then again....the forum I went to was moderated heavily because 10 year old kids potentially visited....

Go look at some random thread from 2005. You will be shocked.

Yeah seriously. If you want to see a terrible forum, go check out the Heroes of Newerth main forum, I honestly believe 90% of the posters there are trolls.
What separates TL from other forums, in my opinion, is that its more of a community and less of a place you go ask a quick question, but with the release of SC2 there are a lot of new people who are coming here to just ask their question and be done.

I mostly notice this on the strategy forum. A lot of stuff there is pure bs tbh...
I have been lurking this place for years and I don't think it drasticly changed... Altrough I probably wasn't here around 2005 or earlier

I agree with this, because I myself experience the same sensations. I'm older than you too :p

Thought the overall post quality back in mid 2000s was piss poor, but the community was closer and more tight knit. Certainly felt that way while I was lurking. Now, the overall post quality is much higher (Just take a look at a random thread from 2005 and you'll see how bad it was back then), but now the user count is skyrocketing and it feels like the old sense of community is slowly disappearing.

I haven't been around TOO long, but much earlier than SC2 beta started.
I wouldn't say it has gone totally downhill. Sure there are a lot of not-so-mature people on the site, but there are a lot more people who are mature. Yeah... moderators are real fast now, too. Must be all that training they got back in Beta testing jkjk

I remember when I use to have really retarded conversations in the general forums, it definitely has got better if anything. Although nowadays I hardly post there because threads get too big too fast and I have nothing different to add anyway.
I feel like I have to read the whole thread before posting, that's why I post mostly in blogs, very few posts to read through.

I've been lurking for a long time before SC2 beta came around, and I'm going to have to agree with the general statement that post quality has not actually dropped. The mods are doing as good a job as ever, but the influx of people is like the arrival of lots of new blood.
