Xero's ban was based on circumstantial event that are NOT explicitly stated in the rules, and his punishment was decided before there was any chance of him discussing the matter at hand. Many of you misinterpret me defending that he doesn't deserve any punishment at all, but I am arguing that his punishment is too harsh.
No, he had a chance. He wasn't banned for well over a day or something after the fact that it was probablyt a bullshit story came to light. As everyone pretty much agreed this guy posted 100+ times a week, and was almost certainly following the reception to his story. He had a chance to reply. He didn't
There also seems to be the problem that people seem to misinterpret Chill's PM, he said if he found out he was a liar he would be baned. He didn't say admit that you're lying or you will be baned. That's why admitting to his story would have no bearing on the course of action taken(which means him continuing on with his story doesn't make him any more of a douche bag then he was before, he was baned anyways so why not, he doesn't lose anything or might be able to salvage his situation), which brings me back to my first point that there was no explicit rule stated that this was a something that could get him in trouble. He had no way of knowing that he'd get perma ban when he started, and admitting to it after he got the pm would of gotten him baned anyways. There was no warning to admit to, there was no patience with him.
It seemed implicit, at least to me, that he would not be banned, or at least permabanned and dealt with as severly if he came clean right then, rather than trying to continue get people emotionally involved in his story with ever more elaborate lies. As a side note, thats what makes this more than an honest mistake. He knew people were getting involved, plenty emotionally, and yet continued to weave a story that was only going to hurt people in the end. It's not that unlike leading on someone in a relationship, you get them emotionally attached to you even though you have no actual interest in them; to me thats what you would call being a douchebag, not an honest mistake.
Morover, this guy apparently had a history of warnings and bans. It was likely that one more slip up from him, even a minor one, was going to be his last anyway, and this was certainly more than a minor slip up. So even if you really feel a permaban for this was too harsh, consider that he isn't being permabanned for just this but in conunctiuon with the fact that he had a terrible posting history riddled with past bans and warnings.
If you argue that he should have known that deceiving a mass amount of people would undoubtedly piss people off and that the forums are dictated by common sense, then he should have been warned first not be out right baned. Breaking unspoken rules is always a hard matter to deal with, but mods should assume that people don't know them, and give them warning before judgement, not judgement without warning.
First of all let me reiterate what I said above. His ban severity was probably influenced by his previous history of being a poor poster. Also, keep in mind that TL is the mod's house. If this guy comes in and shits on the carpet, the mods have every right to kick him out. You seem to be arguing that he didn't shit on the carpet but rather tracked a small pebble inside or something. Be that as it may, its ultimately the mods house, and perception is reality; they are absolutely within their right to kick this guy out.
The thing is, we really don't know exactly how it would of played out if he came clean, but judging by the PM, it would of meant that he would have gotten baned anyways. I understand why the mods baned him, and I'm not saying it's not in their right to kick him out, i'm giving my opinion on why i think it was an unfair judgement.
