Star Wars: The Old Republic is a story-driven massively-multiplayer online game from BioWare and LucasArts. Your personal Star Wars™ saga begins thousands of years before the rise of Darth Vader when war between the Old Republic and the Sith Empire divides the galaxy.
You will battle enemies in dynamic Star Wars combat, team up with other players to overcome challenges and determine your own path down the light or dark side of the Force.
So I want to know what the RPG community here on TL.net thinks. Personally I loved KOTOR I, never played KOTOR II and just finished Mass Effect (after getting it as a present from a friends <3!) Now I hate MMORPGs and other types of MMOs out there and think they are all a big time/money waste. But I just can't seem to decide what to think about this one. I mean the kotor universe is actually fun because it doesn't use the old cliche heroes/villains such as Vader and Luke but on the other hand it's still Star Wars -.-;.
I think this is going to suck, since an MMO is the exact opposite of the KOTOR games. In the KOTOR games you are the only person who can do it and the galaxy will pivot based on you. In an MMO everyone has to be equal so it will be nearly impossible to get the same effect.
I'm also not really into mmos and would rather have had them work on a single player kotor 3. That said, I don't really mind that they are making an mmo. It is not like they are ignoring their old single player fans, because they are also making Dragon Age and I'm sure they are working on a followup to Mass Effect. I hope they improve the art style of the game though, the screenshots that I have seen look really bad.
Hopefully they get a loyal fanbase and then switch the whole game up and piss them all off into leaving. I'm not going to make a suicide joke tho that would be in bad taste
Storyline wise, they had better not put any emphasis on your character being the chosen one or any of that, but rather make it clear that you are one of many Jedi that you need to compete with for the esteemed title of 'Zezima'.
Lol I can already see it when you play as a good char that turned evil an NPC will cry "You were the chosen one!" along with every other char playing this damn game ;D.
Don't get sucked in. If you don't consider playing WOW, probably shouldn't consider playing this. I don't especially condone mmo anyways, but blizzard did launch a quality mmo that no company has done before. Usually mmo is has the motto of "get hooked, then add more contents". At launch, they are terribly unpolished/undone. So it'll probably take them 2 years after launch for it to be any good.
I'll certainly try it, just to get to know what happened to the characters in the first KotOR. I have good experience about story based mmos anyway (Guild Wars was quite good). This game will be either epic or epic fall, there's no middle way :/
new trailer from E3 just out. Looks absolutely amazing! definitely makes me want to play this game.
interesting to see how the multiplayer will work (whether you can play as any sort of character or will "force" characters just be imba and no one plays normal soldiers. of course release isn't until mid 2011

The only thing that didn't bleed awesome in that trailer was the tackling of Sith. That would not happen, just, no.

The one thing I absolutely hate about starwars, and all other well know franchises, is the fanboys who can't ever admit that their idealized 'super cool awesome person with powers' isn't in fact all powerful, and bitch about whenever they fail to be the most 'super cool awesome person with powers' in the room at the time. let me beat it into your skull, Sith/force users are not all-powerful, and if you can't understand that, you will hate this game for making your idealized 'super cool awesome person with powers' less powerful then in your wet dreams about them.
On that note though, I'm probably gonna be a force focused sith when this comes out, and if it lives up to the bioware story-telling experience, it will be absolutely amazing.
