About 2 weeks ago, my cat knocked my external harddrive off of my desk. I had roughly 300 gigabytes of anime, and 100 gigabytes of music videos/performance videos/etc. on it. I sent it back about 2 days after that happened and just got my new one today. It was a different model, which surprised me, but the storage space was the same. 1TB.
Today, when I went to go take a shower, I did not notice that the power supply for the harddrive was wrapped around the arm of my chair. When I pulled my chair back, it pulled the external harddrive off of my desk and onto the floor, breaking it.
I have now lost 170 gb of anime that I had just moved from my "Downloads" folder to it.
Luckily all WD products come with a 2 year warranty.
From now on I'm taping that motherfucker to the desk.

you gotta watch where you put things ;____;
that or get 1TB worth of flash drives

lol one of my 500GBs died for NO FUCKING REASON once. It was like I shut down the computer and headed to bed. Next morning, the hard drive couldn't be detected at all. I tried to use a different port, switched the cable, everything that came to my mind at the moment but nothing worked. So I sent it to the shop, and they tried to detect it with their computer but failed. Well of course I had a new one in exchange but not the fucking 400GB of HD movies that took me months to collect
I hate it so much when my hard drives go fubar for whatever reason, mainly because of the data loss.

D: that would be terrible trying to sort through them all.
I feel like a noob, I haven't even used the 140 gb's on my laptop HD lol

Propped up on the highest level of the desk like an idiot. There isn't anywhere else for me to put it really. I'm buying a new desk soon so I plan on getting something with some lower shelving.
I'm gonna start backing my shit up on discs too jic.

How exactly did the power supply end up there? Do you have wires running down the front of your desk or something? I'm just having a hard time picturing a setup where this could occur...

Ah yeah, I started doing that but dvds are just too small... and take so long to burn. Its only really worth it if the stuff is somewhat irreplaceable.

What one needs is a really solid back up solution. I need to find a really good backup solution, but I never learn.

yeah im a bit confused by this too, i cant imagine any set up where the wires cant go around the back of whatever you're using somehow. My external hdd is just in a drawer, no funky shit happening to it in there. A well ventilated drawer where cats that I don't have can't get at it.

I'll take a picture of my setup with the broken drive.
Don't be shocked at my disgusting hikikkomori cave

So, as you can see, the power supply is running down the front of the desk into my power strip. The smart thing to do would have been to pull my desk back an inch and run the cord down the back but I'm not smart.

I hate using external hard drives. I lost my first music collection (more than 80GB of music) to an external hard drive failure.
As a result, for my next computer, I built a desktop with a case with six internal hard drive slots. I have ONE external that I only use to move shit around, like giving large folders to friends and whatnot.
MY HEART WAS RIPPED FROM MY BODY THAT FIRST TIME.
