My terrible fortune with external harddrives.

About 2 weeks ago, my cat knocked my external harddrive off of my desk. I had roughly 300 gigabytes of anime, and 100 gigabytes of music videos/performance videos/etc. on it. I sent it back about 2 days after that happened and just got my new one today. It was a different model, which surprised me, but the storage space was the same. 1TB.

Today, when I went to go take a shower, I did not notice that the power supply for the harddrive was wrapped around the arm of my chair. When I pulled my chair back, it pulled the external harddrive off of my desk and onto the floor, breaking it.

I have now lost 170 gb of anime that I had just moved from my "Downloads" folder to it.

Luckily all WD products come with a 2 year warranty.

From now on I'm taping that motherfucker to the desk.

lol one of my 500GBs died for NO FUCKING REASON once. It was like I shut down the computer and headed to bed. Next morning, the hard drive couldn't be detected at all. I tried to use a different port, switched the cable, everything that came to my mind at the moment but nothing worked. So I sent it to the shop, and they tried to detect it with their computer but failed. Well of course I had a new one in exchange but not the fucking 400GB of HD movies that took me months to collect

I hate it so much when my hard drives go fubar for whatever reason, mainly because of the data loss.

D: that would be terrible trying to sort through them all.

I feel like a noob, I haven't even used the 140 gb's on my laptop HD lol

Propped up on the highest level of the desk like an idiot. There isn't anywhere else for me to put it really. I'm buying a new desk soon so I plan on getting something with some lower shelving.

I'm gonna start backing my shit up on discs too jic.

How exactly did the power supply end up there? Do you have wires running down the front of your desk or something? I'm just having a hard time picturing a setup where this could occur...

Ah yeah, I started doing that but dvds are just too small... and take so long to burn. Its only really worth it if the stuff is somewhat irreplaceable.

yeah im a bit confused by this too, i cant imagine any set up where the wires cant go around the back of whatever you're using somehow. My external hdd is just in a drawer, no funky shit happening to it in there. A well ventilated drawer where cats that I don't have can't get at it.

I'll take a picture of my setup with the broken drive.

So, as you can see, the power supply is running down the front of the desk into my power strip. The smart thing to do would have been to pull my desk back an inch and run the cord down the back but I'm not smart.

I hate using external hard drives. I lost my first music collection (more than 80GB of music) to an external hard drive failure.

As a result, for my next computer, I built a desktop with a case with six internal hard drive slots. I have ONE external that I only use to move shit around, like giving large folders to friends and whatnot.

MY HEART WAS RIPPED FROM MY BODY THAT FIRST TIME.

It just suddenly failed?

((

When I get a desktop, I'm going to go for a lot of internal space and try to rely on externals as little as possible.

To save quite a lot of money in the long-run, you could buy an external harddrive enclosure, as internal harddrives are cheaper than most external ones. And most internal harddrives usually last longer too.

Because I have a feeling most people don't know what external enclosures are, regarding the fact ppl are still buying external harddrives, you can check them out here: http://www.newegg.com/Product/ProductList.aspx?Submit=ENE&SubCategory=92&N=2010010092

The cords are just too damn short. Before i bought a desktop, i used an external HD with my laptop, and the cord wasn't long enough to reach the lower shelving on my desk, so i definitely knocked it over a few times.

Solution: too long is better than too short!

Haha, six slots should definitely be enough space. How much space does that give you?

Running out of space on a desktop is pretty hard these days. It's only happened once to me about five years ago because my computer was old and had maybe 50GB of hard disk space. I figured I could just add another 50GB hard drive, but the smallest drive I could find was 320GB lol.

Long story short, hard drive space is pretty cheap these days, so you should be fine.

I avoid all external hard drives with power cords. They are a pain to deal with, and are unusable if I want to take my collection with me -say on a plane where there isn't a connector for an AC Adapter.
I keep my hard drive in a little tray thing on the top of my case and simply connect it into a front USB port... and I haven't had any issues with knocking it over and stuff.

I've had the opposite experience, somehow.

I have a portable 320 gig HD with about 250GB anime and 20 GB music. I was playing music off the HD when it fell, unplugged and bounced off the floor. When I plugged it back in it starts clicking and I start freaking out, assuming that it's never going to work again.

The next day, feeling that I have nothing to lose I whack it and try again. It starts clicking then magically starts whirring. I have no idea how it mystically recovered from the click of death. A month later I got a 1 TB desk HD and backed everything up to it, but the 320 GB still works. It was one of the most incredible experiences I've ever had using a computer.

My desk HD is locked to my desk, so it can't fall more than a few inches. And having 2 drives to back up important stuff to gives me some peace of mind that even if one fails I can recover off the other.

pretty much like some people above said; do NOT buy external hard drives, i repeat, under any circumstances do NOT buy external hard drives. internal is the way to go.

ive lost 3 externals in my life; 5 years ago, i had a 300GB (which i guess was the shit back then) that straight up fell from my desktop case ( like a feet an a half in the air...not even)...and went bust. so i lost all my data right there. 3 years ago, i bought 2 times 500GB externals so i could store all my videos, and BACK UP all my shit on that exact same 500GB model. i felt secure. one day, i tried to power up one of them. i was a bit lost with all my cables and what not so i took a power supply from a smaller external HD that i had (160GB) and tried to power up the 500GB worth of videos that i had. the little light stopped so i was like wtf is this, i cant even turn it on...wtf..... but i really wanted to see some video, so 2 seconds later i retrieved my other external 500GB which contained the exact same back up, plugged the exact same power supply on that back up drive and right there the light stopped etc....it turned out that both 500GB's went bust because each type of drive needs to have ITS OWN type of power supply (for which many of my geek friends made fun of me for not knowing this shit) but. basically i had no more videos at my disposal.

moral of the story; internal is safer, cheaper and transfers MUCH faster.

my old fuckin pentium 2 (1998 i think?) still has its hard drive working. ive never ever ever lost any data internally. even when i get viruses, i always have time to move shit around. internal is where its at.
you want to store large amounts of data and still feel safe? do what i do. internally, i got a 2TB western digital on my D: drive which stores 1.2 terabyte of porn and 528 GB's of music. to back all this shit up, i got two-times 1TB internal drives that i use as back up and that i put in some bag with towels and everything and i ask my grandma to keep at her house for me so im still safe if i get burglarized or if there's a fire etc...

(seems like im crazy cuz its expensive...but on eBay in 2010 , you can buy a TB internally for like 80 bucks and 2TB for 150..

i only have ONE external....a 160GB (that same fucker that fucked both of my 500's) that i use to move stuff sometimes when i visit friends, or to move stuff between the various computers at my house....its kinda like a huge fuckin' USB flash drive...nothing more. DONT use it as a backup, and DONT use it as your primary storage device.

That sucks. Can't wait till SSDs become more accessible to consumers; they're a lot faster and a LOT more durable than HDDs. Apparently up to 1500 Gs:

http://www.samsung.com/global/business/semiconductor/products/flash/ssd/2008/what/durability.html

So in a few years you'll probably be able to drop your hard drives all you want!
