After clicking view (some vods are finally "up") it looks like you need to pay 50 bucks to watch them when they're up, otherwise you have to wait a 3 day period before you can watch them for free.
this is bullshit. im not paying a penny to those assholes. im glad some teams decided to opt out of this tournament.
few comments from others: "Ok... $50 to watch vods? Good luck with that. We supported you guys because it looked like you cared about us. "
"I guess if the demand is high enough, there'll be torrents floating around with drm free re-encodes."
"Dah. Well I knew it had to come eventually. Guess I'll be waiting 3 days. Best of luck with your new business model. Can't wait to see the VoDs."
received email from gomtv in response to mine ___________
Dear Valued Users.
First, I have to say 'Thank you' for your supports to GOMtv.
There are lots of misunderstanding about the premium service.
'Premium Service' is only for the users who want higher quality of the video service. It's not for profits from the users who want the same vedio service which GOMtv have given since Classic season 1. Even the users who don't purchase the premium service can use the general live-streaming and VOD service which GOMtv have serviced so far.
GOMtv' goal is not to make the massive profits from the service but to expand the e-sports fan base. From the start of global service, GOMtv have paid lots of efforts tangibly and intangibly. Every staffs of GOMtv really appreciate you if you understand the situation and you are generous in the discomfort. GOMtv promise GOMtv will pay every efforts which we can to make the service will be better day by day.
Sincerely.

The irony in that last quote.

If it only were april the first already :O

Yah, I don't see many people paying $50 to watch VODs 3 days earlier and in HD for a tournament that doesn't have 5 progaming teams participating especially MBC/OGN and SKT1
|
Here's what I wrote on their site:
"Probably not a good idea. Once word gets around people will just post the stuff on youtube or other places. Gom will have to then try to stomp down anyone uploading these vids before they're officially released for free (and this will not work).
There's something about the online world. We expect things for free, and there will be a huge backlash against this. Also, it will slow down making Korean gaming popular in the english market.
Gom should expect some reward for giving us free entertainment. But, the best way to do it would probably be through PASSIVE means. These could be banner ads, and ads within the video itself."
This is the worst idea ever. Is it perhaps an April Fools joke? I mean, fifty dollars?!?
Also, why are some teams boycotting the gom tourny?
|
Actually, its been a day and only 1 of the matchups were uploaded, so even if you paid there's no guarantee about the wait time. For these it looks like a 4-5 day wait.
this is just hearsay from me, but allegedly OGN/MBC reason that their tv channels will be threatened by this tournament. also i imagine practice time is a main issue, in the past players have not played certain leagues to better prepare for others, typically proleague.

Just watch them on Youtube if you have to see them, they're on Jon747.

Yeah, but they're in Korean. It's just not the same unless it's in English. And with Nick.

5 Teams not playing this season? That's not very good isn't it!
Which teams aren't playing this time round then?
|
SKT1, eSTRO, Sparkyz, MBC, not sure about last one. might be KTF

ACE maybe? I remember them opting out of some tournament before due to the nature of their work. At least, I think I do :p
EDIT: guess not, cleared that up :p

OGN/MBC/Estro/SKT1

And why aren't some teams competing?

I think it's because OGN and MBC own competing channels with GOM and don't want to give them the exposure. eStro is owned by the company that has rights to all of the Proleague VODs (?) and thus also has a vested interest in not supporting GOM.
SKT T1 are probably just pulling an X-17 and winning once before refusing to re ever again.

All they need to do is make it $10 or $15 and they will get soooo many more subscribers.
|
Best be an April Fools jest.

Are there really so few sponsors? That they can't just embed gazillion advertisment within the cast, or give us some commercials before the actual game?
There should be tons of ways for them to make money w/o resorting to charging a fee. Heck, people don't even pay for porn these days anymore.
