After clicking view (some vods are finally "up") it looks like you need to pay 50 bucks to watch them when they're up, otherwise you have to wait a 3 day period before you can watch them for free.
this is bullshit. im not paying a penny to those assholes. im glad some teams decided to opt out of this tournament.
few comments from others: "Ok... $50 to watch vods? Good luck with that. We supported you guys because it looked like you cared about us. "
"I guess if the demand is high enough, there'll be torrents floating around with drm free re-encodes."
"Dah. Well I knew it had to come eventually. Guess I'll be waiting 3 days. Best of luck with your new business model. Can't wait to see the VoDs."

Dear Valued Users.
First, I have to say 'Thank you' for your supports to GOMtv.
There are lots of misunderstanding about the premium service.
'Premium Service' is only for the users who want higher quality of the video service. It's not for profits from the users who want the same vedio service which GOMtv have given since Classic season 1. Even the users who don't purchase the premium service can use the general live-streaming and VOD service which GOMtv have serviced so far.
GOMtv' goal is not to make the massive profits from the service but to expand the e-sports fan base. From the start of global service, GOMtv have paid lots of efforts tangibly and intangibly. Every staffs of GOMtv really appreciate you if you understand the situation and you are generous in the discomfort. GOMtv promise GOMtv will pay every efforts which we can to make the service will be better day by day.
Sincerely.

The irony in that last quote.

If it only were april the first already :O
|
Yah, I don't see many people paying $50 to watch VODs 3 days earlier and in HD for a tournament that doesn't have 5 progaming teams participating especially MBC/OGN and SKT1
|
Here's what I wrote on their site:
"Probably not a good idea. Once word gets around people will just post the stuff on youtube or other places. Gom will have to then try to stomp down anyone uploading these vids before they're officially released for free (and this will not work).
There's something about the online world. We expect things for free, and there will be a huge backlash against this. Also, it will slow down making Korean gaming popular in the english market.
Gom should expect some reward for giving us free entertainment. But, the best way to do it would probably be through PASSIVE means. These could be banner ads, and ads within the video itself."
This is the worst idea ever. Is it perhaps an April Fools joke? I mean, fifty dollars?!?
Also, why are some teams boycotting the gom tourny?
|
Actually, its been a day and only 1 of the matchups were uploaded, so even if you paid there's no guarantee about the wait time. For these it looks like a 4-5 day wait.
this is just hearsay from me, but allegedly OGN/MBC reason that their tv channels will be threatened by this tournament. also i imagine practice time is a main issue, in the past players have not played certain leagues to better prepare for others, typically proleague.
|
Just watch them on Youtube if you have to see them, they're on Jon747.

Yeah, but they're in Korean. It's just not the same unless it's in English. And with Nick.

5 Teams not playing this season? That's not very good isn't it!
Which teams aren't playing this time round then?
|
SKT1, eSTRO, Sparkyz, MBC, not sure about last one. might be KTF
[edit] just these 4.

ACE maybe? I remember them opting out of some tournament before due to the nature of their work. At least, I think I do :p
EDIT: guess not, cleared that up :p

OGN/MBC/Estro/SKT1
|
And why aren't some teams competing?
|
On March 30 2009 16:52 Havermayer wrote: And why aren't some teams competing?
I think it's because OGN and MBC own competing channels with GOM and don't want to give them the exposure. eStro is owned by the company that has rights to all of the Proleague VODs (?) and thus also has a vested interest in not supporting GOM.
SKT T1 are probably just pulling an X-17 and winning once before refusing to re ever again.

|
All they need to do is make it $10 or $15 and they will get soooo many more subscribers.
|
Best be an April Fools jest.
|
Are there really so few sponsors? That they can't just embed gazillion advertisment within the cast, or give us some commercials before the actual game?
There should be tons of ways for them to make money w/o resorting to charging a fee. Heck, people don't even pay for porn these days anymore.
|
Its fuckin ridiculous imo!~
|
Now, I can't even write a comment cause I'm not a premium viewer so I can't view the VODs.
|
If everybody donates me 1$ i'll get a premium ticket and upload all the vods =D j/k
I have a premium ticket if someone can show me he has a sick upload and wants to contribute (its a shitton of work) I can give him/her my info so he can upload it on my rapidshare account or on youtube. That requires a little more work tho because they are .gom files when you download them so then you gotta convert them first
|
heh, i thought it will be like several bucks for premium vods, but 50$... man...
|
great... i cant watch it live 'cause the gomtv stream never works for me and now i have to wait 3 days to watch the vods, just great.

tbh I think this is insane. I really don't see anyone pay that much money for it and it just didn't make sense. I had to sit through commercial breaks that lasted 20 minutes, you're not telling me they're not getting a shitload of money for that. Also, this first episode was a big letdown for me. The players and matches were really mediocre (not that I didn't enjoy watching IdrA kick Korean ass, but the other matches were meh), English commentary is nice but Nick's jokes are becoming memes and he has to praise every match (even if they're not good) which is becoming annoying andthe lack of an insane audience/Korean shoutcasting really, imo, takes away a lot of the exciting ambience that you find elsewhere. Along with four teams not competing I don't know how GOM wants to try and attract an audience. I dunno if I'll watch this season. :S
|
50 == to much. And the site seems buggy and a few comments went like "wtf i payed but it don't work" so im not paying.
I also lost respect for them as they claimed in some mail that Tasteless forwarded that they had listened to our wishes and commands and did this out of care...
Then it turns out the new system is a pile of crap. Their HD is not even HD, it laggs when you load it even though you payed and whatnot else bad

50 bucks to watch sc is a bit much. I dont really care for HD, its starcraft from 1998.

They're assholes for trying to make money from their business? Why are you entitled to these vods. And its not like they're even not releasing them, 3 days is hardly a big deal.
|
Reading another thread someone mentioned it was 50 bucks PER season, not flat one time buyers access fee or even a yearly subscription, 50 per season is about the most ludicrious thing I've ever seen. I'm sure if they cut the price to 15 bucks a season they would get infinitely more customers and thus more revenue =\
|
While I doubt many people will decide for the Premium option, waiting 3 days is not too horrible. Afterall, you do not look into the mouth of a given horse.
If worse comes to worst, I am sure there will be volunteers willing to provide english commentaries for GOM games.

Why would they care for your support if they can't get money? Nerd wrath means nothing if there's no $$$ backing up that wrath.
GOMTV can make money in two ways. One is to charge viewers directly. The other is to bombard viewers with commercials/advertisements. Obviously, the ad money's not pouring in. So they're resorting to making people pay.
And if this thread is any indication, foreigners don't care for English commentary enough to actually pay the money required for them to make money.
It's looking more and more that the English stream will probably end this season and Tasteless will have to find himself a new job.

It doesn't matter if GOM is doing this for profit or to "promote esports." What people are getting upset about is the rediculous price for the high quality stream as well as the delay on the free vods.
$50 is a lot of money for an unneeded service. The high quality vods really aren't that much better than the free vods. This makes people angry because they would subscribe to support esports, which is GOMs stated "mission", if it was set at a reasonable price. From GOMs point of view, they would actually make more money if they set it at a lower price because of the greatly increased volume of subscribers.
Delaying the free vods accomplishes nothing but angering the community. It doesn't match GOMs mission of promoting esports. Why would you purposely delay vods of matches if your goal isn't to simply increase profits. Not releasing the vods at the same time hurts the community.
Hopefully GOM re-evaluates their pricing strategy because they've lost the only thing that was going for them: easy and fast access to english vods.

Some of you are so incredibly cheap hahahaha. $50 is a one-time fee, for basically 100s of hours of entertainment. If you just want to try one VOD in premium quality, it's $2. It's not that outrageous lol. You get the VODs anyway for free in lower quality.
Although really, there's no way they can stop you from downloading the VODs. It's flash video, you can just View Page Source and copy the right link.
|
I just checked GomTV.net and you can watch the free VODs now =/ I don't think it has been 3 days has it?
|
It hasn't. People pulled out their torches and pitchforks a little quick.

Did they change their minds? Was it an April fool's jest?

I checked again today... and it works just fine. We can all view them.
What happened?

it's a fee per season so it's around $100-150 a year.
not worth it imo

This is what ten years of living in a bubble economy does to people... no concept of the value of money.
1) Everything you got before for free you still get for free.
2) New stuff is on offer which kicks more ass but needs money.
3) Making everything kick more ass needs money.
4) Making anything at all needs money.
All things considered, if one liked GOM before, why not now?
|
Anyone know why we can't download the VODs any more?
I got premium membership, and can't find the link to download the VODs. Are they updating the site?
|
The link is on every vod page on the site.
If it doesn't work, the logical course of action is to contact GOM's support team since they are the people who you paid to get the VODs.
And yes, I am a rocket scientist. I guess the world does need people like us... 0_o
|
oh i m sorry. did i mention that i wrote "can't download the VODs any more?"
mainly because the download link was taken down off of EVERY SINGLE VOD yesterday and the evening before, including ones that I already downloaded. All the support on GOM including the forums are relatively technical, and just thought someone might have a simple straightforward answer that I can get within a couple minutes of asking other people who might also have premium or validate the same issues that I had, instead of sending a reply that would take several days more of my time.
People also posted saying that they had not received replies from support for several days, so this is a much easier way of approaching the situation.
And no I am not an English major, but I do pay attention to little things like that before posting especially condescending replies.
I guess the world does have people like me ...
O_o
And the downloads are back up. I guess they were having an update, but the news and other tickers had no mention of it, which I also took some time to check.
a little disappointed at the quality of people they let be a rocket scientist these days ...

Hi!
First of all, thank you for giving us star craft fans commentaries in english.
I actually think that 50 bucks for a season is well worth the money, IF, the vod audio were synchronized with the video. Sometimes it's off by more than 30 seconds which makes it impossible to sync the audio/video with gom player (max time is 10 seconds). And even if it's less than 10 seconds off in the start of the match, this might change later on so you have to synchronize several times in order to watch a match correctly.
Please try to fix this as soon as possible..
