I want to start getting really healthy. I have been getting a lot of pains in my chest recently, which I believe is due to stress, bad eating habits, and lack of exercise.
Chill out, eat better, exercise more.

I will probably get flamed for this, but I was gaining shittons of weight from working at a callcenter, and with my lack of discipline I found it hard to make extra time to go excercise daily or even three times a week. Eventually I started doing Yoga, which helped a lot! Other than yoga though, I hated the gym.... I ended up switching jobs to a job where I was always on my feet lifting computers and installing them and soforth, however, now I am out of town living on perdiem, and my weight is going up again, all because I have to eat out EVERY night. These are my experiences, so to sum it up: 1. Try and make your profession more stress free or labor intensive, either one will give you the ability to make time to work out more comfortably, or to get excercise on the job. 2. Eat healthier - as others have said subway and deli sandwiches are a good start. I also prefer stews and veggie soups, if you can afford it, use fresh vegetables - you want to make eating healthy as desirable as possible by enhancing its taste, but not to the point of making it unhealthy! 3. Lately what I do (because of my gym phobia) is put on some tunes on my laptop and ill do crutches and run in place and do jumping jacks in my room. Especially when I lose a game of Starcraft (because I suck and am a D player) I lose a lot and I get pissed, as do a lot of newbie gamers, so instead of yelling or punching your keyboard, I try and do some situps/crutches/ jumping jacks and then stretch (i know thats backwards). What this does is makes your physically limiting hobby, less so, and you can be working out your body and mind by working out between starcraft matches. (works for me anyway, doesnt make me win more, but I'm sure I've lost a few pounds doing it) Lastly as far as foods go, try to stay away from huge starchy dinners at night. Pizza is probably the worst dinner you can frequent. Also, as far as healthy organic foods, if you are in the same boat as a lot of us, money prevents you from getting odwalla juices everyday and all the fresh organic food... plus having the time to prepare all of that shit.... who has time? Not me, and living out of a hotel, doesn't help! Try being a smart shopper, and getting good greens at your local grocery that are on sale, learning a few basic recipes helps too! There are health cookbooks you can get on amazon for like, 2 bucks lawl. If you frequent white rice, start eating more brown.. these subtle changes in diet go a long way, but dont try and do everything at once, cravings will kill you! Anywho, that wasn't very organized but I hope you can take what I have learned over my 20 years of life and we can work together for a healthier future! (oh holy shit that sounded like a hospital advertisement, bahahaaha) but yeah anyways, good luck man.

Also, get weights. Its pointless to do cardio without lifting, and once lifting becomes second nature, its such a good stress reliever. I would probably just get a membership to your gym. Greasy foods such as pizza, fries, burgers, and other assorted fried things are incredibly bad for you. Never eat white bread again (this includes for your pasta. get whole grain.), water will become the only thing you drink, other than skimmed milk (drink sparingly, still has loads of fat. if you don't like milk you can get calcium supplements from your local drug store, over the counter.). Bananas are a GREAT food, get used to eating them. As far as snacks go, peanut butter, although high in fats, has many good nutritional aspects to it. Spread it thinly on a piece of BROWN bread, have for a snack. Not only is it a great calorie filler, but also quite tasty. That reminds me. Count your calories for one day on your current diet. Make a schedule for yourself. If you're eating 3000 calories a day (a bit on the -a lot- side), decrease it by 500. This is called a calorie deficit and is necessary to create when losing weight. Depending on how much weight you want to lose, you can either do a -500 or a -1000 deficit. If you're starting out already obese, just removing sodas and white breads from your diet will have you noticing results quite quickly. As far as exercise goes, adjust your running speed to how you want. You should be running about 20-30 minutes for each period you go to the gym, or better yet, run outside. With weights, you want to learn (and practice) the squat, the deadlift, the benchpress, and the seated row. Dips are also very good exercises. The reason these lifts in particular are better for you is because they are called compound lifts. That is, they work multiple muscle at once. They're 1000% better than the machines as well, because with freeweights, you're doing 3d movements without being assisted by the machine, and on a machine you're doing 2d movements. Muscle mass = High weight, low reps Conditioning (if you want to call it this?) = Low weight, high reps PM me if you have any other questions.

http://bestdocumentaries.blogspot.com/2007/08/big-sugar-documentary-parts-i-and-ii.html It has a lot of controversial stuff, but it will make you hate the sugar industry as a whole, and for me, I LITERALLY, kicked drinking pop overnight.... and I have never done that with anything in my life. I used to drink Sprite and Moutain Dew RELIGIOUSLY! So yes, if you get time, watch that, and my friend, weight will plummet off your ass like USAirways flight 1549 plummeted out of the sky, no joke!!!!

It is NOT hard to stop drinking soda. I stopped for 8 months, cold turkey, and I lost around 20~ lbs (from pop alone!). Keep in mind I used to drink this stuff, as ToSs.Bag said, religiously. I was drinking around 8-12 cans a day. Not good. The only reason I started drinking again was because I stopped visiting the gym, and thus fell off the bandwagon. Even afterwards, I only drank a pop, maybe once a week. Good luck dude. Remember, you are better than all of the people NOT doing something about their lifestyle.

There are tests that show your personal metabolism and how do you process carbohydrates. So some people can eat a lot of fruits and not gain a kg, and there are others that only fruit diet will make them gain weight. Besides this, many vegetables are also high on carbohydrates. Bean and potatoes for example.

To put it very simply, vegetables are the best thing you can eat. Not only to keep you from getting fat, but because they have lots of good stuff in them. The number two predictor of who gets cancer (after smoking, obviously) is who eats vegetables (and eats well in general, but mostly vegetables) and who doesn't. Try to get fresh vegetables into every meal - it's not that hard once you get into it. Count calories if you're trying to lose weight. I think this has already been mentioned. Look at a calorie counter to keep track of stuff - example http://www.thecaloriecounter.com/ . Make sure you are honest about your serving sizes, because otherwise the results of that thing aren't going to help you at all. Everything TrainReq said is pretty accurate. As far as exercise goes, it really depends a lot on your current physical state. You can start running, swimming, biking, whatever you want really. Interval training (I find) is really helpful, in that it breaks up your workouts so it's less boring and you feel more accomplished at the end. Not to mention it has greater benefits all around than continuous slow jogging/whatever. Of course, you have to be able to tolerate higher intensity than a slow continuous workout - no such thing as a free lunch. But if you're in fairly bad shape, I guarantee the first week or two will hurt and then you'll feel much better and be able to work much harder.

QUOTE] Yes, counting calories is the best way to lose weight. But there is a small catch in this. Every person needs different amount of calories per day. For man it may vary from 1800 to 2500. So in order to lose weight you have to actually eat at least 300 calories less than your normal daily dosage. And there are tests for this also. If anyone is interested I can write down an actual diet system which is healthy and unless you have some medical condition, if you do it right you can lose a lot of weight. I know a lot about this stuff, because my mother is profesor of medicine on endocrinology and all this diets stuff.

Other things: - Fruit - Water (As a reference to how much you should drink, my coach says that someone who sits on his couch all day needs 4 bottles of water) - As for food, just check the nutrition facts on the back. It'd be a lot better to make your own food, however, with fresh ingredients

What everyone else said about fruits/vegetables is very accurate. DO: Vegetables Fruits Whole Grains White Meats (red meat is fine just less often, 1 per week tops i'd say) Beans Water/Juice/Tea DONT: Soda/Energy Drinks/Caffeine <- Energy Drinks are terrible for you Cigs Fast Food

Eat a large breakfast, medium lunch, small dinner. And small snacks in between. This will help keep your metabolism going. Get enough sleep, often times I find myself eating more when I'm tired. Push-ups and crunches will help you get into shape but try to mix it up once in a while. If you keep doing it over and over, it doesn't do as much after a while. You can do things like six inches, elevators, v-ups, bicycles, and planks (especially these). And as TrainReq said, go to the gym and use free weights (over the machines). You'll get nice and fit after a while and you'll feel good about yourself
