personally I prefer walking to running. running is obviously better cardio but if you have problems with your body or are at risk to them, running can exacerbate your problems. honestly about the healthiest thing you can do is serious yoga. increases your flexibility, calms and clears your mind, increases body awareness, increases strength, and when done right it should increase your vo2max significantly. running may increase it more, I really don't know, I doubt anyone does. but the difference wouldn't be big if it does.

The problem with fruits is that there is a lot of sugar in them, end of. They are better than candy since they have other important things in them other than sugar but they are still full of sugar. And calories are calories, it do not matter if they come from vegetables, butter or dietary pills, in the end the only factor if you get fat or not is if you eat more calories than you burn or not. The problem with sugar is that its calories that you do not feel, the other calories get you stuffed but sugar you can almost eat an endless amount of making it the most dangerous of all the calories. And jfyi an apple got the same amount of sugar as coca cola per gram while the rest is almost only water which means that it do not feel like you consume calories while you eat them. So eat fruits in moderation if you want to lose weight, they got a lot of hidden calories in them.

It's an old thinking that eating loads of fruits is very healthy. Running 4-5 times a week for about an hour + doing exercises every day is way to much for a beginner. If you want this to work then I recommend you to change things SLOWLY, take one thing per week. Let's say you change something in your diet this week and go for a walk. Next week you change something more and ad running once or twice. Changing things to fast only makes you get bored and it also makes it very hard to stick to.

Type of food ................................ kilojoules Sushi (1 roll) ............................... 185 French fries (small serve) (90g) ..... 1089 1 meat pie (175g) ........................ 1880 1 thin pizza slice ......................... 900 McDonald's Big Mac .................... 1965 Hungry Jack's Whopper Cheese ... 3100 KFC (2 pieces chicken) ................ 3010 Subway (15cm roasted chicken) ... 1350 Peach .................................... 167 Apple ..................................... 270 Orange .................................. 335 Banana .................................. ~400 conclusion: fruit has way less kilojoules than "fast food". Hence the statement "you can eat as many apples/bananas/oranges as you want, without gaining weight" is pretty accurate. You would probably feel sick before you ate enough fruit to get fat. The best thing about fruit is that it comes in a stay-fresh portable skin i'll add a recommendation for you, rushz0rz, get some weights at home, and lift those a few times every day.

-Walk or bicicle at least 20 mins a day -Drink water instead of soda/other stuff -Eat at predetermined times, stay at least 3 hr without eating. -If needed to eat fruit of anykind (grape isnt recommended for high sugar), add vegetables in your daily food, stay away from pizza/oil based food. -Coffe without sugar -For running its something you have to control yourself, keypont: dont run less than 14 min, the key about running is not about getting faster or stronger at first but to rise the cardiac rithm and to keep it for at least 12 min. You can run as slow as you want just keep the pace. After 1 week of 14 min you can run 17 and so on (but dont tun less than 3 times a week). Normally you can end up running 1 hour everyday easily in 2 months but dont push it, your goal is not to get tired. -Check your weight everyweek but dont get to obsesed about it.

as for the food, i realy don't know the situation in the Canada. Research about the origins of the food, is it GMO, how much fat it contains. drop junk food and coca cola products. i have been born with a liver deformation and can sense the chemicals in coca cola products and in chewing gums. don't cut all of the meat you eat, going strait from meat to fruit and vegetables is like stabbing yourself in the stomach. your body can't make such a heavy change. as for the stress, i recommend some eastern physiology for a different mindset. don't get hooked on consumerism and TV. enjoy your life.

-Use raw ingredients as much as possible. Anything that's been processed or pre-baked is going to be very hard to keep track of. When you use raw ingredients you know everything that's going into your stomach. -Drink lots of water -Don't go straight into jogging. Especially if you're coming from a sedentary lifestyle. You'll just get smallish injuries all over and that'll completely demotivate you. Start with simple stuff like taking 30-45 minute walks every day, taking the stairs instead of the elevator/escalator, getting off the bus 1-2 stops earlier...

I want to start getting really healthy. I have been getting a lot of pains in my chest recently, which I believe is due to stress, bad eating habits, and lack of exercise. Chill out, eat better, exercise more. :p

I will probably get flamed for this, but I was gaining shittons of weight from working at a callcenter, and with my lack of discipline I found it hard to make extra time to go excercise daily or even three times a week. Eventually I started doing Yoga, which helped a lot! Other than yoga though, I hated the gym.... I ended up switching jobs to a job where I was always on my feet lifting computers and installing them and soforth, however, now I am out of town living on perdiem, and my weight is going up again, all because I have to eat out EVERY night. These are my experiences, so to sum it up: 1. Try and make your profession more stress free or labor intensive, either one will give you the ability to make time to work out more comfortably, or to get excercise on the job. 2. Eat healthier - as others have said subway and deli sandwiches are a good start. I also prefer stews and veggie soups, if you can afford it, use fresh vegetables - you want to make eating healthy as desirable as possible by enhancing its taste, but not to the point of making it unhealthy! 3. Lately what I do (because of my gym phobia) is put on some tunes on my laptop and ill do crutches and run in place and do jumping jacks in my room. Especially when I lose a game of Starcraft (because I suck and am a D player) I lose a lot and I get pissed, as do a lot of newbie gamers, so instead of yelling or punching your keyboard, I try and do some situps/crutches/ jumping jacks and then stretch (i know thats backwards). What this does is makes your physically limiting hobby, less so, and you can be working out your body and mind by working out between starcraft matches. (works for me anyway, doesnt make me win more, but I'm sure I've lost a few pounds doing it) Lastly as far as foods go, try to stay away from huge starchy dinners at night. Pizza is probably the worst dinner you can frequent. Also, as far as healthy organic foods, if you are in the same boat as a lot of us, money prevents you from getting odwalla juices everyday and all the fresh organic food... plus having the time to prepare all of that shit.... who has time? Not me, and living out of a hotel, doesn't help! Try being a smart shopper, and getting good greens at your local grocery that are on sale, learning a few basic recipes helps too! There are health cookbooks you can get on amazon for like, 2 bucks lawl. If you frequent white rice, start eating more brown.. these subtle changes in diet go a long way, but dont try and do everything at once, cravings will kill you! Anywho, that wasn't very organized but I hope you can take what I have learned over my 20 years of life and we can work together for a healthier future! (oh holy shit that sounded like a hospital advertisement, bahahaaha) but yeah anyways, good luck man.

Also, get weights. Its pointless to do cardio without lifting, and once lifting becomes second nature, its such a good stress reliever. I would probably just get a membership to your gym. Greasy foods such as pizza, fries, burgers, and other assorted fried things are incredibly bad for you. Never eat white bread again (this includes for your pasta. get whole grain.), water will become the only thing you drink, other than skimmed milk (drink sparingly, still has loads of fat. if you don't like milk you can get calcium supplements from your local drug store, over the counter.). Bananas are a GREAT food, get used to eating them. As far as snacks go, peanut butter, although high in fats, has many good nutritional aspects to it. Spread it thinly on a piece of BROWN bread, have for a snack. Not only is it a great calorie filler, but also quite tasty. That reminds me. Count your calories for one day on your current diet. Make a schedule for yourself. If you're eating 3000 calories a day (a bit on the -a lot- side), decrease it by 500. This is called a calorie deficit and is necessary to create when losing weight. Depending on how much weight you want to lose, you can either do a -500 or a -1000 deficit. If you're starting out already obese, just removing sodas and white breads from your diet will have you noticing results quite quickly. As far as exercise goes, adjust your running speed to how you want. You should be running about 20-30 minutes for each period you go to the gym, or better yet, run outside. With weights, you want to learn (and practice) the squat, the deadlift, the benchpress, and the seated row. Dips are also very good exercises. The reason these lifts in particular are better for you is because they are called compound lifts. That is, they work multiple muscle at once. They're 1000% better than the machines as well, because with freeweights, you're doing 3d movements without being assisted by the machine, and on a machine you're doing 2d movements. Muscle mass = High weight, low reps Conditioning (if you want to call it this?) = Low weight, high reps PM me if you have any other questions.

It is NOT hard to stop drinking soda. I stopped for 8 months, cold turkey, and I lost around 20~ lbs (from pop alone!). Keep in mind I used to drink this stuff, as ToSs.Bag said, religiously. I was drinking around 8-12 cans a day. Not good. The only reason I started drinking again was because I stopped visiting the gym, and thus fell off the bandwagon. Even afterwards, I only drank a pop, maybe once a week. Good luck dude. Remember, you are better than all of the people NOT doing something about their lifestyle.

There are tests that show your personal metabolism and how do you process carbohydrates. So some people can eat a lot of fruits and not gain a kg, and there are others that only fruit diet will make them gain weight. Besides this, many vegetables are also high on carbohydrates. Bean and potatoes for example.

To put it very simply, vegetables are the best thing you can eat. Not only to keep you from getting fat, but because they have lots of good stuff in them. The number two predictor of who gets cancer (after smoking, obviously) is who eats vegetables (and eats well in general, but mostly vegetables) and who doesn't. Try to get fresh vegetables into every meal - it's not that hard once you get into it. Count calories if you're trying to lose weight. I think this has already been mentioned. Look at a calorie counter to keep track of stuff - example http://www.thecaloriecounter.com/ . Make sure you are honest about your serving sizes, because otherwise the results of that thing aren't going to help you at all. Everything TrainReq said is pretty accurate. As far as exercise goes, it really depends a lot on your current physical state. You can start running, swimming, biking, whatever you want really. Interval training (I find) is really helpful, in that it breaks up your workouts so it's less boring and you feel more accomplished at the end. Not to mention it has greater benefits all around than continuous slow jogging/whatever. Of course, you have to be able to tolerate higher intensity than a slow continuous workout - no such thing as a free lunch. But if you're in fairly bad shape, I guarantee the first week or two will hurt and then you'll feel much better and be able to work much harder.

QUOTE] Yes, counting calories is the best way to lose weight. But there is a small catch in this. Every person needs different amount of calories per day. For man it may vary from 1800 to 2500. So in order to lose weight you have to actually eat at least 300 calories less than your normal daily dosage. And there are tests for this also. If anyone is interested I can write down an actual diet system which is healthy and unless you have some medical condition, if you do it right you can lose a lot of weight. I know a lot about this stuff, because my mother is profesor of medicine on endocrinology and all this diets stuff.

Other things: - Fruit - Water (As a reference to how much you should drink, my coach says that someone who sits on his couch all day needs 4 bottles of water) - As for food, just check the nutrition facts on the back. It'd be a lot better to make your own food, however, with fresh ingredients

What everyone else said about fruits/vegetables is very accurate. DO: Vegetables Fruits Whole Grains White Meats (red meat is fine just less often, 1 per week tops i'd say) Beans Water/Juice/Tea DONT: Soda/Energy Drinks/Caffeine <- Energy Drinks are terrible for you Cigs Fast Food

Eat a large breakfast, medium lunch, small dinner. And small snacks in between. This will help keep your metabolism going. Get enough sleep, often times I find myself eating more when I'm tired. Push-ups and crunches will help you get into shape but try to mix it up once in a while. If you keep doing it over and over, it doesn't do as much after a while. You can do things like six inches, elevators, v-ups, bicycles, and planks (especially these). And as TrainReq said, go to the gym and use free weights (over the machines). You'll get nice and fit after a while and you'll feel good about yourself

My socials teacher always said that bottled water is bad for you, because the water breaks down the plastic into the water, which has cancer causing agents in it. They are even banning bottled water in Quebec and I expect the rest of Canada will follow. Tap water in Canada I believe has regulations in place on exactly how its cleaned, and the like, making it for the most part of the country insanely good to drink. Bottled water doesn't which leads to random things being added to your water, so before you think of possible cancer agents from the plastic, just ask yourself what chemicals or addidtives have been added to bottled water.

On January 25 2009 05:40 rushz0rz wrote: Wow. Some really good advice. Thx for the replies. My job is very flexible and the manager hardly cares about when I show up and what we do at work, as long as we treat the customers respectfully and that I am there during rush hour (4-8), so I am very reluctant to let this job go while I am in school. Not to mention it's easy as shit, although when people start yelling and complaining that they didn't get 6 anchovies instead of 4, it's really annoying. I think my stress stems from school. I've been very stressed because exams are coming up and my grades aren't where I want them to be. I am a lazy underachiever turned perfectionist and the grades I got right now, while they are good, are making me very stressed. My school is ending and I will have 6-8 months off, so I figure this would be a great time to ditch my nasty, health destroying habits. I will have 2 jobs, but I think I will have a lot more time to dedicate on me, because jobs don't give hours of homework. My meals currently are crap. I sometimes don't eat breakfast (cereal, Applecinnamom Cheerios with 2% partly skimmed), I almost never eat lunch (never have any change for the cafeteria), and my dinner is either pizza, fast food, or a dinner my dad cooked. He works a lot so he can't always cook us home meals, which is why I want to start learning and cooking us healthy meals. It's funny because a lot of the things you do mention I have around the house, especially peanut butter and bananas. Sometimes we get whole grain, sometimes we don't. My dads Italian so he cooks pasta every other night he cooks. I'm not obese, but I have, hmm, how to say this, I am skinny, but I have parts of me that look fat? Does that make sense? I used to be quite chubby, but I lost a lot of weight. I am probably going to start running as soon as my exams are over (this week). I am just worried that if I got to a doctor for a checkup, he will want a bloodtest and I cannot explain in words my fear of needles. I nearly passed out just hearing from him that I MIGHT have to take one, imagine going up to get one. What about pushups and crunches? Would those be good to do after running? I am going to quit drinking pop. I used to drink coke a lot, I cut down recently, but I want to quit all together. I love tea, but I suppose I will HAVE to cut down on the amount of sugar I put in. I also have some more questions. Are there any fast food restaurants out there that are OK to eat from? Like Subway or Quiznos? Because there are always some of those days or nights when you aren't at home and you are busy and out, either at work or just friends, you know. I also started drinking water like a maniac because I heard it vastly reduces your chances of a kidney stone, and lets face it, who the hell wants one of those? Again, thx for all the replies, it is very helpful. As far as the obesity statement goes, I was not implying that you are. Remember, there is no such thing as spot-loss. Your body is like a lake of fat, and it drains from everywhere at once. Push ups are an awesome workout, but I still highly suggest going to the gym, or at least, get a pull-up bar at home and place it between a door you frequent. Everytime you go through the door, do 10 pull ups, or something like that. Going to the gym would be a lot better, though, because everything is right there for you. Don't drink anymore pop. As far as tea goes, I've never been a fan, probably never will, but I've heard good things about green tea. If its imperative that you have fast food, Arby's and Subway are said to be the best places to eat. Arby's because of the types of meat they use (fuck yeah roast beef!) and Subway because of how many vegetables are available. As mentioned before, don't get sauce on your food. Its primarily oil, which, if you've taken any chemistry course, you will know that its liquid fat. Don't get me wrong, some oils are good, and if you intend to do your own cooking I suggest olive oil, but the oils along with the additives in most salad dressings, condiments, etc, are quite bad for you. Ketchup and mayonnaise is a great example of this, although I'm not sure if ketchup has oils in it or not. Regardless, they're bad for you. Your dad being Italian is awesome, because pasta is really good for you, as long as its made with the correct ingredients. Brown flour for your noodles means its good. Try to get a sauce that contains some type of vegetable, such as mushroom or whatever. Again, I cannot stress it enough. Eating 5-6 meals a day is imperative. Breakfast especially. Getting fit is a long, arduous road, and it takes strong motivation to walk it. Don't give up.
