However if it does turn out to WC3 in space then what happens next? Will we be forced to play it out of loyalty to Blizzard and because that's where the scene will be at?
Or will we try to keep the Brood War scene alive and watch as people gradually desert and sponsorship money dries out?
Well I have a radical third idea, that I want to bring up. Now if you're a total lover of all that is Blizzard you should probably read no further because the following idea will likely get your panties in a twist. You have been warned.
Anyway my idea is this, if SC2 is like WC3 and therefore a good game but not what we and the Korean fans really want. How about a Korean company make its own RTS game? An RTS game that has all the room for the fast macro/micro gameplay balance that we love so much in BW but with updated graphics etc. to appeal to a wider audience and a new generation of gamers as SC2 is seeking to do.
This may seem like a dangerously revolutionary idea but think of the advantages. Koreans are very united behind the Brood War type of gameplay. WC3 was never big there and has basically completely died out now in terms of televised coverage. Korean gamers love the BW style and a new RTS that can capture this kind of gameplay has a chance to do well if SC2 fails to make the grade.
We would have a new vehicle to rally the SC community, who like macro/micro BW-style play, around. Korean game developers of course, do mostly focus on MMORPGs but i have no doubt that they could make an RTS if they tried and there would be no argument about MBS or feeling any need to 'noobify' the game because Koreans in general are so used to the BW-style of play, they know the public could accept it.
Anyway, I'm not saying this is a perfect solution as it would have a fracturing effect of its own on the community but I really think that it is a valid alternative to just accepting inferior gameplay, if indeed SC2 turns out to be like WC3.
