Not too close, but now that I have a car and all I planned on becoming a bit closer to my sister. Keep in mind my uncle is pretty deep into the fundamentalist shit. He supports the mass murder of the non-christians. Especially muslims and homosexuals. What bothers me more than him not letting me and my sister speak, is the knowledge of just how much he has indoctrinated her into it. Putting this bridge between us is making absolutely certain that the conditioning he has put her through will in no way crack or crumble. tell him that in the christian, and muslim holy books that it talks about loving thy neighbor, and to be open minded and even if you don't get on your knees and blow jesus every sunday you can still be a cool guy. How old is your sister? Just hang out with her.. Screw what your uncle thinks
it's about a 30 minute drive to where she lives, and she's only 13. So it's difficult.

Unless you two both live in cages, im sure you can find some way... I think the problem is that the sister is siding with the uncle. If she was brought up in an evangelical house then its very likely that she has their same strong beliefs, and therefore, she will not want to speak with her atheist sinner of a brother. If that assumption is wrong and she wants to see you too, then I think you guys will find a way.
Keep in mind that everybody sins, it's human nature. On another note, that's a really dumb thing your uncle would say. That seriously makes me furious how people act like that.

I'm proud of you.

Its been mentioned but you were pretty stupid to do this. When someone plays the "I couldn't just LIE I had to BE TRUE TO MYSELF" card it usually just means they wanted to stir up trouble.

When you're sitting across the dinner table from someone who does nothing but bring up topics that antagonize your beliefs, and spews the most extremist nonsense imaginable for hours and hours, it's pretty hard to let yourself agree.
I think there's a difference between caring about what you think and believe, and being a problem causer.

The only thing I took away from your story is that believing in God makes you wealthy and capable of taking sisters away from whiney athiests. I vote God in 2008. Otherwise you will be stuck making blogs on Tl.net about how your godless beliefs had your sister that was thrown away for economic reasons at birth taken away from you.
Your only chance at reclaiming the sister you weren't very close to but can now afford to relate to is to pray to God, repent to your uncle and hope that your sister has not been indoctrined by your lack of foresight.

IMHO you should just apologize to your uncle and promise not to discuss religion with her. I'm an atheist too but proclaiming your theological beliefs is not worth tearing your family apart.

Weird. Are you both still kids? I don't mean that in a condesending way it just seems odd that they wouldn't let you talk to each other if you were all grown up.
It seems like you have a new job: pissing off your uncle
*EDIT* my fault for not reading first. Still piss of your uncle though

What I got from this thread is that believing in God makes you closed minded with a strong desire to kill everyone not part of your religion. Wait, I've known that since my first history class.
