When my sister was born, my family was in financial ruin and we thought it was in her best interest for her to be raised by my wealthy Uncle Pierce and Aunt Melissa.
Aside from being wealthy, they're also lunatic evangelists. No matter.
Up until now, I've had what I perceive as the lack of self-respect to lie myself off as a christian, just to get along with my family. But at a recent family function, I admitted my strong athiestic beliefs, and my uncle is so horrified he will not allow my sister and I to communicate.
I'm pretty pissed off.
And then I find out July and FBH lose in GOM!
Never have I been so furious in one day.

On a happy side note: you can save a bundle by switching to geico.

You need to find a way to either make amends or get around crazy uncle.
Thats some serious fucked up shit right there though.
Do you know her thoughts on the situation?

How close were you with your sister before this happened?

Not too close, but now that I have a car and all I planned on becoming a bit closer to my sister.
Keep in mind my uncle is pretty deep into the fundamentalist shit. He supports the mass murder of the non-christians. Especially muslims and homosexuals.
What bothers me more than him not letting me and my sister speak, is the knowledge of just how much he has indoctrinated her into it. Putting this bridge between us is making absolutely certain that the conditioning he has put her through will in no way crack or crumble.

I think the problem is that the sister is siding with the uncle. If she was brought up in an evangelical house then its very likely that she has their same strong beliefs, and therefore, she will not want to speak with her atheist sinner of a brother.
If that assumption is wrong and she wants to see you too, then I think you guys will find a way.

Sorry to hear that. It's very difficult being in a family with people who are very sensitive about their religious beliefs.. well mainly if you disagree :p

She has strong beliefs, but not twisted to the point of hatred for others. Not yet.

it's about a 30 minute drive to where she lives, and she's only 13. So it's difficult.

Its been mentioned but you were pretty stupid to do this. When someone plays the "I couldn't just LIE I had to BE TRUE TO MYSELF" card it usually just means they wanted to stir up trouble.

When you're sitting across the dinner table from someone who does nothing but bring up topics that antagonize your beliefs, and spews the most extremist nonsense imaginable for hours and hours, it's pretty hard to let yourself agree.
I think there's a difference between caring about what you think and believe, and being a problem causer.

The only thing I took away from your story is that believing in God makes you wealthy and capable of taking sisters away from whiney athiests. I vote God in 2008. Otherwise you will be stuck making blogs on Tl.net about how your godless beliefs had your sister that was thrown away for economic reasons at birth taken away from you.
Your only chance at reclaiming the sister you weren't very close to but can now afford to relate to is to pray to God, repent to your uncle and hope that your sister has not been indoctrined by your lack of foresight.

IMHO you should just apologize to your uncle and promise not to discuss religion with her. I'm an atheist too but proclaiming your theological beliefs is not worth tearing your family apart.

Weird. Are you both still kids? I don't mean that in a condesending way it just seems odd that they wouldn't let you talk to each other if you were all grown up.

What I got from this thread is that believing in God makes you closed minded with a strong desire to kill everyone not part of your religion. Wait, I've known that since my first history class.

Just tell your uncle that you belief in Jediism, which doesn't interfere with your view of atheism since jedi code doesn't step into the realm of science.
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Jedi_religion
yes fun times, and if he wants to know what Jediism is you can kindly point him to any video store and pick up a copy of any of the six star wars movies. And you can kindly point it out to your uncle that the script of star wars movies and the bible have one significant similarity. They are all fiction, the distinction is that one is science fiction, while the other is a fantasy.

This is true to some extent, and its also likely that your uncle is an idiot. However, what exactly did you expect to accomplish by disagreeing with him? Do you think he is ever going to change his mind?
Honestly your best play here is to apologize solely so you can be close to your sister. She will grow up and make up her up own mind in time. You can help her figure out tough things when she is at the right age, but ONLY if you have a good relationship.

No it's ok cause he hates them for their beliefs. They just have his sister so he fucked up and now he cannot talk to his sister that he didn't really bother to care about until it was economically appropriate.

too late dude he already ignorantly risked his fake relationship with his sister so as to make sure everyone knew at the family function that he indeed does not believe in God.
If you know your uncle is a raving crazy religious lunatic perhaps telling him that you think his God is not real is a selfish step to take if you actually care about the sister your family gave him because he could afford it.

sure I wouldn't think he thought of that either but again: If you know your uncle is insane. You thoroughly believe him to be a religious nut case what possible, constructive reality could you hope to create needlessly revealing that you in fact have faked your religious beliefs and currently do not believe in a God.
I know TL.net is filled to the brim with athiests who wield 160 iq and 12 inch cocks but in the real world you play your cards close to your chest or you get burned. He got burned and is now expecting some kind of comfort here on TL.net.
