How does this bracket structure even make sense? You just need to check the 2nd vs 2nd bo5 to the final four weird match to realize. Is there some kind of seeding? Where players who won 2/3 matches get seeded vs a player who won 0 (including showtime and ragnarok)? Or is the knockout bracket randomized? I have no idea, but according to liquipedia, the only seeded match is the loser of the 2nd vs 2nd bo5 Also, Shin and Showtime will be joining the tournament in the knockout bracket. What a weird setup.

Protoss doing well so far all things considered.

So ludicrous to me lol - so they are playing for the first time on Saturday? Just kind of so strange that there's this brutal bracket for three days and Shin/Showtime just kind of show up at the end to play multiple bo3s.
Not gonna lie - I find it entertaining though.

The bracket/structure actually does the two most important things incredibly well, gives us more games and ensures that the top4 should be the most deserving and accurate.
Only real coinflip is the knockout/last chance portion. How and who Showtime, Shin, and the 2nd "2nd" player will be inserted against will be interesting. But at the end of the day whoever makes it through will have earned it.
It's been a long time since I've been genuinely interested and pumped for sc2 but I can't wait for the top of group B to play out tomorrow.

I love this format for a big tournament such as this one
It ensures that the top 4 are indeed currently the strongest and playing in form
As for showtime and shin, I’m pretty sure they are just glad to be there to collect the 15k. Doubt anyone has high hopes for them to make a deep run.

My main issue with the format is how irrelevant placement is in the first two groups beyond top 2. Like sure, you'll get slightly better seeding into the knockout bracket, but after an easier first match for the people who place 3rd, bombing out immediately vs making it to losers final will make little difference. Feels like a lot of bo5's just for an easier first round opponent.
Also imo Showtime/Shin should be on an even footing with everyone else, even if a format with 18 players in the same round could be awkward. With the format I doubt Shin will go far, but I think he'd have an outside chance of top 4 if he started on the same playing ground (Maru is basically the only player there's no way he beats, though Serral has made him look silly since Kato 23 too.)

Holy christ the production level of this is insane. Congrats to all the talent that got to be there and thanks for everything ya'll do
EDIT: love Astrea pulling off the Julian Casablanca's early 2000's look

Group A upper bracket could be either exciting or a flop, group B upper would be the pinnacle of SC2 for tomorrow/today.

Not sure if it's just me or not, but so far the games don't feel a tier above the usual intensity of premiere tournaments the way that Gamers8 was last year. (Where players were doing every little thing that they usually don't do, for example doing some extra micro/harass to try to kill 1 more worker, etc.)
Maybe it's just cus it was only Day 1, or cus a lot of the matches so far are lopsided (due to seeding, nothing wrong with it ofc), or maybe it's because of the format where the games for now don't "fully matter" since if you lose you can still make it in via Knockout Bracket?
Whereas last year it was that semi-Swiss thing, where it felt like every match win was very important because each win put you against the other higher players and you need to keep winning to be moved to the top.
Just some thoughts so far! Will see how the next few days are!

I would say Bo3 create better suspension in the first stage than Bo5, it allows for more upset and unique strategy, its hard surprise your opponent 3 times in 5 games, so everybody would stick to their most stable gameplay.

On the other hand I think the KO bracket becomes doable for everyone and should deliver awesome matches since the best 3 players of the world right now are already through. With a high Chance of Serral, Maru and (Dark/ Reynor/ Clem) out of the picture, the KO is wide open

Cant wait for todays games, epecially Group Bs matchups. But every game will be a banger for sure, and with 2 streams the downtime should be minimum aswell

What a weird setup. Take that giant trip just to play one bo3 and get 15k $$$.. bizarre format. Should have just made two groups of 9 players, 4 advance from each (either bo3 or bo2 with 3/1/0 point system like in DotA 2) and then bo5/7/9 double elim bracket for last 8.

Or Swiss / Pseudo Swiss. I do like that in CS2 and think it could be cool in SC2
