I definitely think it would get easier if he defeats Serral. A TvT vs one of these guys that he plays so often and should be the favorite against (although somehow Maru always seems better against TY relative to other Terrans) would be much more doable than a match against Serral. I just don't think TY can just pull out a win against him. TY also has (or has had) this self-defeatism when he goes up against Serral and I honestly think it hurts him a lot. He just never has that in TvT, he's just very confident there. Being the Code S TvT GOAT probably doesn't hurt here, as it shouldn't. (did I mention that 70% TvT winrate?)
But if he plays as he have been the last couple of weeks none of this matters. He'll just get rolled by either Serral, Cure, or Maru.
As for PartinG, wow - did not see that coming. I really have no idea what to expect from this match (presuming both players actually show up). Obviously it's a rematch and PartinG will be extremely motivated to prove himself. Plus they have a virtual eternity to prepare for it. Very hard to call imo, but definitely feels less scary than Dark.

Good tip.
Also Reynor in the final would be the big threat if he somehow made it past Serral.
I hope TY goes for some early harassment/pressure builds that cause enough damage to make a later push work. I fear for what will happen if he plays straight up, or even does something cheesy.
Slightly better performance than expected but nothing astonishing. He's far away from his GSL winning form. Probably has 2 weeks to prepare for PartinG though so maybe he can get his shit together.
I like that TY seemed to bring a newer greedy bio style to those games, going for harassment to buy time, even if it didn't work out for him. I agreed with a lot of what PiG had to say about his builds. As much as Serral played well, it seemed as though little oversights were what cost TY from getting to late game and it wasn't so much Serral taking the game out of his control, as TY not quite being ready when he should have been. His multitasking wasn't quite up to his usual standard in these key moments either.
He's clearly not in his best condition. With better attention to upgrades, macro (eg. managing his gas mining), slightly altered army composition and more careful harass, I can see that style working. Also, his vision could have been a little bit better. Perhaps 1 viking to clear overlords instead of two liberators (when he only really controlled one anyway) helps him with potential drop lords/nydus counters etc. I actually hope he continues to work on that style of bio and gets the timings right. He was actually more than 20 supply up vs Serral in G2 with not that much having happened. I really wondered what his plans were for those games. I love excess command centres if you have the chance as it limits the effectiveness of zerg counter play considerably.
With that said I think TY definitely should have played a game of mech, as you need to vary up your compositions against good players and Serral seems more fallible when people go mech--eg. Inno the other day. I wouldn't have hated one proxy build either.
Well he should have tried a bit harder for the group stage then
I don't know that he gets past PartinG anyway cause PartinG looks great against Terran but if he does he's gonna be at risk of running out of builds that work in TvP. Better if it's not all TvP.
Yeah, it looks very difficult this season. If Cure advances I doubt he's able to beat Trap. I guess the best TY can hope for is Rogue, but that's not really a player you generally want to go up against in Ro4 matches.
In any case, I agree that he's the underdog against PartinG so it's probably all irrelevant.
I don't know. I feel like if he doesn't die to something crazy at the beginning of his games against PartinG he will be a good shot in the mid-late game. With that said, who knows what PartinG will do. He may catch TY off guard. I feel like he would be really hard to prepare against because he's so capable of really changing it up.
If you take PartinG's games vs Innovation they were so wonky. Storm drops. Mass clumped tanks. Failed all-in. That's the kind of game I hope TY avoids. Inno for sure had his chances G1. Pressure builds will probably work better than hard cheese vs PartinG.
I actually don't mind the way it's turning out, despite the Protoss factor. Dark and Maru (potentially Rogue) were the two guys capable of taking it out of TY's hands even if he turns up in good form. I think everything else is at least even chance or slightly favoured if he's having a good day. Obviously, this is easier said than done!
Sorry not sure how to do a better link than that, but it's basically a video of TY visiting Special and Armani and talking about what it's like to be a sc2 progamer.

I don't think he'll do that. The last few times he's beaten PartinG it's always been TY's game plan to throw PartinG off early, not the other way round. So I don't expect him to just try and play normal games - which is basically how Maru lost to PartinG last season.

This comment was actually more about PartinG's play than TY's...ie. PartinG doing all-ins or DT drops or something that might catch TY unaware. If TY's scouting is on point and his reactions good he will shut this stuff down and then be in a good position. He might even be able to get a lot done with counter pressure at the same time.
I definitely agree with you and think TY should do early game things to throw PartinG off in most or all games. I think early pressure builds that have a transition, like proxy starport hellion drop and hidden tech might be the best options. Similar to last GSL. I'm not as big a fan on the kind of commitment he made in the ESL Summer finals with 2rax all in, just because Parting is likely to scout early, but in certain situations, I definitely think they can be effective too.
Really interesting series. Great prep. Great execution. I'm looking forward to seeing completely different preparation next round. Hoping for Stats as I think that will produce several epic late games and because Stats is my second favourite player. Go TY! Continuing to prove that he is a ridiculously consistent and strategically gifted player.
Really interesting build in game 3 in particular - the concussive shell marauders w/ the hellions really caught Parting off guard. It was clearly well-practiced and thought out by TY. Hopefully he can bring even more nuanced builds/prep to the semifinals
Wow, that was an excellent series from TY. I think he's really showing some stuff that we haven't been used to. It's always been that TY hasn't been so good at really thinking about who he's playing against and thus stumbled against all sorts of aggressive play that he really should have seen coming (in particular playing those dirty protosses like herO, sOs, and PartinG). Not this time. That really was some excellent prep and he was clearly trying to counter PartinG's style, while exploiting his weaknesses (always having some counter-harass ready to move in when PartinG hit him with pressure, which I'm guessing he did because he figures that multitasking is a problem for PartinG). Maybe his casting is really helping here since it makes him take deeper looks at opponents in his preparation for that job.
He's rebounded fully after his slump and looks like a champion right now. Of course it has to be Stats that he goes up against, because the world is evil. I would think that Stats is a more difficult opponent for TY if he goes for the defensive macro style (even though TY himself said the opposite). Let's hope for a great seven-game macro series, a nice 2017 Katowice rematch.
Also, he qualified for Code S season 3 ro16 as well as the DH Masters season finals (not that that matters anyway).
PS. That final game was a thing of beauty from TY.
I like the Stats MU because Stats is more likely to allow TY to play the style he wants in most games. Stats seems to be in excellent form all of a sudden, which is a bit troubling, but TY has had his number in big matches in the last few years, so let’s just hope that continues. I’d expect Stats to proxy a stargate and things like that, but I don’t think we’ll see any all ins. If TY gets to mid games vs Protoss in decent positions then I often feel like his decision making and army control are very strong for him.
