I swear, that years ago when I was a kid I saw someone playing a version of Street Fighter 2 (dunno which it was...) and he was playing guile, and he was able to throw sonic booms while in mid air, and they were basically homing in that they could move vertically up and down as they moved across the screen. He also was able to throw them fast enough that there were more than 1 on the screen at any time. I also remember someone playing Ryu and doing something similar, i.e. multiple air fireballs on the screen at one time that were semi homing. Am i crazy? Was I just watching someone play a modded version of the game or something? I believe this was in canada so maybe those crazy canadians had their own version, but I swear this happened and I haven't gotten that memory out of my head in the last 15 years I know exactly what youre talking about but I have no idea what they are. As far as I know theyre hacked versions of the game.

Street Fighter 2 was very popular and continued to get more popular with the release of Champion Edition(CE).. A lot of companies offered upgrade chips to make the game even more exciting, hacks basically to SF2 boards for cheap. They were very common for a while around the time CE came out and Capcom started to crack down on it a bit and then they disappeared with the release of Hyper Fighter. They were upgrades to CE that basically just made the game really fast, some moves were altered(projectiles could go diagonally a bit) and you could do moves in mid-air. A really famous thing a lot of people remember is when doing blankas bite throw his sprite would switch between biting and ryu doing an uppercut. I remember my 7-11 had a rainbow chip for a while and it allowed air throws and I wasn't any good at doing moves so i picked Chun Li who had good jumps and speed and I would just air throw the shit out of people lol.

I believe this was in canada so maybe those crazy canadians had their own version, but I swear this happened and I haven't gotten that memory out of my head in the last 15 years I remember seeing machines almost exactly like that. I remember one where fireballs would have an upwards or downwards angle (randomly, I think). I also remember tatsus and spinning bird kick would go REALLY fast across the screen. And there was one machine where Guile's sonic booms moved in a sine wave, he could throw them in mid-air, and after throwing one he could jump again, so he could jump higher and higher indefinitely. Recently I figured out they must have been hacked versions of the game. And now red.venom confirms it.

For that matter, how is KOF98 UM different than KOF98 aside from the new Ultimate mode (where you get to pick and choose between attributes of the old Advanced and Extra) and several new characters including guys like Geese? How many moves have been altered, and how? Tiers changed? etc.

The superfast tatsu definitely looks familiar. The rainbow title screen looks familiar, too. But I've never seen the homing projectiles, E.Honda + Blanka having hadokens, or the character changing before.

I remember in some of those hacked versions, you didn't have to charge Guile's sonic boom at all: you just did back forward punch.
