Afaik they play recent games mostly. Newest Tekken edit: oh wait I'm an idiot--why is it not T6?, newest VF, newest SF (though I'm betting on 3S getting kept when SF4 is out?), newest KOF (in a way ), etc. Super Turbo is there because it's Super Turbo, but aside from that...it's just a happy circumstance that GGAC and AH2 happen to be good games I think. Keep in mind I'm probably pulling crap out the ass, but IIRC I've heard said SBO despite the obviously great competition is more a business venture, hence the rotation of newer games.
hmm lots of other players didn't qualify nitto pierre match keeper (dunno if any of these guys stopped playing) was hoping to see nacchan's urien in action here too, though he may have played ken if he played this anyways
Haji > shoryuken.com Your list is fully-updated and fully-translated, as opposed to the one on SRK. I think you missed the G3 team, though.
I'll post the Arcana Heart 2 qualified players list. Haji, as more players lists are posted, do you think you can link to those posts in your OP, in addition to the 3s players list?

T5 is retarded. T5.1 is okay, T5:DR is pretty good. Oki system is a lot more manageable in DR, as opposed to how terrible it was in T5 (dunno if T5 uses the same as every other Tekken or if it's new). T6 seems to take the dumber aspect of T5.x and make it dumber (wall combos, damage in general) but seems like a fun game still.
lol I dunno why you suddenly went into a tekken rant, but T5 uses the tech catch thing of TTT and T3, where you couldn't block mids and lows while techrolling. You could also get launched after a backroll in TTT. I assume what's what you meant by terrible oki?
DR fixes the techroll problem by allowing blocking, but you still have to guess mid/low. Dunno what they did about the backroll though. Looks like it's the same.

Are there overpowered characters? I don't expect them all to be good since it has many, but i remember in T3 2 or 3 characters just raped the rest silly.

yes Boss Ino Shiroitachi for starters J retired, he's on and off playing even though he retired but he hasn't qualified (no idea if he's trying..are there last chance qualifiers that still have to be done?)

last chance qualifiers are literally on the day of the event, so we wont know till august.
There are clearly two players with the ID 井上 (Inoue), the Makoto player and the Oro player (iirc from Kyuushuu). LOL I'd love for them to meet in an MC'ed match.
That reminds me: there is an AH2 player called りょ ("ryo") and one called ryo. I thought they were the same person until I saw that they were both in one tournament together. =/

This is a semi random question, but I've been wondering this for YEARS. I swear, that years ago when I was a kid I saw someone playing a version of Street Fighter 2 (dunno which it was...) and he was playing guile, and he was able to throw sonic booms while in mid air, and they were basically homing in that they could move vertically up and down as they moved across the screen. He also was able to throw them fast enough that there were more than 1 on the screen at any time.
I also remember someone playing Ryu and doing something similar, i.e. multiple air fireballs on the screen at one time that were semi homing.
Am i crazy? Was I just watching someone play a modded version of the game or something? I believe this was in canada so maybe those crazy canadians had their own version, but I swear this happened and I haven't gotten that memory out of my head in the last 15 years

I know exactly what youre talking about but I have no idea what they are. As far as I know theyre hacked versions of the game.

Called rainbow chips or Rainbow Edition usually.
Street Fighter 2 was very popular and continued to get more popular with the release of Champion Edition(CE).. A lot of companies offered upgrade chips to make the game even more exciting, hacks basically to SF2 boards for cheap. They were very common for a while around the time CE came out and Capcom started to crack down on it a bit and then they disappeared with the release of Hyper Fighter. They were upgrades to CE that basically just made the game really fast, some moves were altered(projectiles could go diagonally a bit) and you could do moves in mid-air. A really famous thing a lot of people remember is when doing blankas bite throw his sprite would switch between biting and ryu doing an uppercut.
I remember my 7-11 had a rainbow chip for a while and it allowed air throws and I wasn't any good at doing moves so i picked Chun Li who had good jumps and speed and I would just air throw the shit out of people lol.

I remember seeing machines almost exactly like that. I remember one where fireballs would have an upwards or downwards angle (randomly, I think). I also remember tatsus and spinning bird kick would go REALLY fast across the screen. And there was one machine where Guile's sonic booms moved in a sine wave, he could throw them in mid-air, and after throwing one he could jump again, so he could jump higher and higher indefinitely.
Recently I figured out they must have been hacked versions of the game. And now red.venom confirms it.
First time I heard of it was looking at the nFBA supported games list. Man that rainbow edition is whack:+ Show Spoiler +

Hence how it's popular enough to get into SBO. Also like how on the other side of the Pacific, Marvel can be popular. Anybody know much about MBAC or any of the other games? From what I've seen of MBAC it involves a lot of air movement, air-based combat, and loose comboing. Then it has that guy that's a wannabe Eddie.
For that matter, how is KOF98 UM different than KOF98 aside from the new Ultimate mode (where you get to pick and choose between attributes of the old Advanced and Extra) and several new characters including guys like Geese? How many moves have been altered, and how? Tiers changed? etc.
Ohhh I see now: the hack was called "Rainbow Edition" because the Title had rainbow colours instead of the usual colours.
The superfast tatsu definitely looks familiar. The rainbow title screen looks familiar, too. But I've never seen the homing projectiles, E.Honda + Blanka having hadokens, or the character changing before.

IIRC, the Japanese have an informal "soft ban" on certain characters in ST, such as O.Sagat. I wonder if they take kindly to JustinW using that character in SBO?
I know all of the Japanese 3s qualifiers except the last chance are finished. For AH2, however, there are still 5 spots remaining, but the list of qualified players hasn't been updated since July 6th. Maybe all 5 will be filled in the last chance quals...
even the official SBO page doesnt have any qualifier results after july 6th for AH, I assume it's only last chance, OR the suck at updating, which they definitely do, so hmm

Yeah it's just O. Sagat with the soft ban. Occasionally you will see Japanese players using him, though, but I don't think any top level player specializes in him. Some recent 2on2 tournament (where one person controls both characters on a team) had at least one guy pick O. Sagat as his secondary. Anyhow, O. Sagat on tier lists usually ranks just right up among Dhalsim in the top tier, or just a bit higher. Here is a 10 point diagram of ST matchups that's a bit old but still pretty good--from what I've heard it's just Old T. Hawk that needs to be bumped up a little from that listing. It's not as much that he's terribly terribly broken (he's even against Boxer, maybe even disadvantaged against Claw) as much as how he's kind of boring to play against. The soft ban as far as I know is to encourage greater diversity of character selection--without as much O. Sagat, some lower tiers that get destroyed by him can thrive more.
On a side note you can see why Akuma is hard banned. Even so, historically there's been cases of people picking Akuma in tournaments. Apparently some decent but retired Ryu once soloed Akuma in a 3on3 tournament as a joke, an XMania I think. But after a certain point that ban was strengthened to be a true ban.
Point is, there might not be too much ill will towards Justin Wong. Or Mike Watson, who's playing O. Sagat with Jason Cole's Sim. The fact that 2/4 (max!) foreigners is O. Sagat is funny though.
Nah like I said for me personally I don't know any of the other games or their players anyway. Unless you've got infinite lab hours to burn, I think we're all good once Bill gets his final AH2 player list.
And what if he DOES have infinite lab (and drunk) hours to burn?
By the way, Haji pointed out on MSN that since July 6th was the last qualifier, the last 5 AH2 spots are probably for the last chance quals. Thanks Haji for your detective work.
O.Sagat isn't the only character with a "soft ban" (ie. people don't really like it when people pick him). Vega (claw) gets more or less the same response since he's about as easy-mode lol. It's just boring and stupid to play against those two, moreso than any other bad/stupid matchups for the most part. Still, it's WAY more common to find a Vega player than an O.Sagat player as far as I can tell. Can't wait to see how well the Japanese as a whole handle O.Sagat, since they've apparently had some issues in the past (not enough to not win in the end, mind you).
Would anyone with lots of time on their hands be gracious enough to find and post the schedule? .....
I hope a bunch of us in Waterloo can get together on those nights/mornings and watch the live streams. At least for 3s, anyway. (And for AH2.) Between games, we can probably play as well.
i dont really understand why thouhg, since everyone knew going in that the Taiwan/Chinese players would rape, and all the players being interviewed on site were saying so as well. ~_~
KoF98 will ALWAYS be huge in Asia, and it helps that it's 98UM which is "new." They freaking love that game over there.
Anyhow, just checked and S.Korea does indeed have Tekken qualifiers going on for their spot(s?). Reposting results from Tekken Zaibatsu (posted by Rush2k4):
Two teams from Korea, Soyongdori/Rain/KimMotive as team 1 and Kingbaksa/Nin/Holeman as team 2. I'm not super familiar with the first team but Nin and Holeman are pretty well known top players in Korea.
Apparently MaDDoGJiN and CCer's team got upset in group E; MDJ just got out of the army earlier this year and stepped it up pretty fast, teaming up with CCer to win a major national tournament of some sort a few months ago. Too bad they couldn't quite push through at this qualifier, would have been like a Tekken-style glimpse of hope that Boxer will return from the military and own it up shortly afterwards. Maybe some Koreans will try to get through the LCQ?
ah not surprised at all about the no streaming (in fact i said it in another thread like 3 months ago). DVD sales is important, and pple captured and uploaded the stream to youtube asap. If i were them I wouldnt stream it either.
Speaking of DVDs, do you know which arcade you can get Kuroda's at, haji? I have a friend heading over to Tokyo and I'd jizz my pants if I could get my hands on those.

You should definitely go and watch this. 100%. You won't regret it.
It sucks that there is no live stream this year. I couldn't even watch it in the first place. Maybe they didn't want the stream to be ripped and uploaded to YouTube?
If you have the chance to go in RL, you should definitely go. You know the hype you feel when watching games on a live stream? It's like 10x in person.
“Last year, we managed to get up an experimental live stream, but this year there are no plans for an identical live stream.
“However, there are plans to continue prompt reporting and quick dissemination of the things that go on at the fighting game tournament that is Tōgeki.
“For that reason, other than the reporting from Arcadia Mobile, there are plans for a news program concerning Tōgeki to be distributed on the Internet. This is very different from last year’s live stream; the many matches will not be something we could say to be relayed in a real-time fashion. Till the very end, for the three days of 15–17 August, there will be a program that keeps pace with Tōgeki ’08 Final at Differ Ariake Arena; there are plans to do a live broadcast from the grounds, but we not be showing you the matches that do not mean very much.”
...
The rest is three paragraphs saying “NO LIVE STREAM. COME HERE; IT’S AWESOME IN PERSON.”
So to sum it up: no live stream. Just some special “programs” for the finals. The schedule for those will be up on the 12th (so basically later today if you live in the U.S.).
(emphasis added)
In particular, can you check the translation of the bolded part? Because the way this guy phrased it, it sounds like they'll be broadcasting the important matches (i.e. the finals). o_O
So apparently there IS a live stream this year, BUT rather than showing the matches full-screen, it gives you the view from a camera overlooking the arena, with the big-screen in view. Also, they like to randomly cut away to interviews like last year.
But the most disappointing part is that the top 4 are omitted entirely from the stream. E.g. tonight they are showing some SBO '05 footage on the stream while the finals are going on.
According to this post, MOV'S HAND IS BROKEN! SO KURODA AND INO ARE PLAYING ON A 2-MAN TEAM NOW! OH SNAP!
The best team in the tournament just got neutered. Despite that, imo they're still one of the best teams. Kuroda and Ino are both good enough to OCV most of the teams, imo. But with only 2 players, against the stronger teams (especially RX/KO/Nuki) they'll have to play solid as heck to avoid losing due to bad luck. And Gouki and Makoto aren't exactly known for being solid characters...
holy fuck, that sucks for them big time haji is probably happy i wonder which hand he broke...he could still try to muscle through it i would if i were him, might as well try at least he already has an SBO win though, unlike kuroda
On August 16 2008 05:55 KOFgokuon wrote: i wonder which hand he broke...he could still try to muscle through it i would if i were him, might as well try
Do you have any idea how painful that would be? :S
You can't exactly "muscle through it" since your muscles are attached to your bones and they exert force directly onto your bones.
depends on which hand it is if it's his left hand i think he could prolly finagle some way to grip the joystick by wrapping it to his hand or something like that if he has a good cast it'll still be pretty stable and it may not hurt too much I'm just saying that it's possible
1. Go to the link above. DL and run setup.exe for their OceanGrid application. After you run setup.exe, wait for a few minutes while it downloads from the 'net. It will appear as if nothing is happening: this is normal. After a few minutes, a standard Windows Installer dialog will appear.
2. Revisit the link above. Now it asks you to install OceanGrid again. You'll go "WTF" but actually it is asking you to install an ActiveX control that the application needs.
3. Okay now you can finally watch the stream. Please stop all uploads/downloads and p2p programs: the player is a p2p application, so your upload bandwidth is needed to allow others to watch as well.
Now playing: interviews and Hokuto no Ken. The matches aren't fullscreen and there is no sound: you're stuck watching a view of the arena and one of the bigscreen monitors.

Don't know the exact detail, but KO has never won an SBO. Most of the time, he advances far, despite being the only one of his team to win any matches (even though his teammates are top players). One of the most memorable ones is 2006, when KO took out 2/3 of J's team in the semifinals. Then J beat KO+Nuki+Boss (I think Nuki and Boss did not win any matches during that tournament).

* Ma Chao (馬超, Yoriko) - because he was so good in AH1 when Yoriko sucked, and he is still a beast, and he is using perhaps the best character in the game.
* Pianist (ピヤニスト, Yoriko) - because he seems to be another great Yoriko, even though I've never seen him play.
* Mi (ミ or 三, Petra) - because even though Petra is mid/low tier, I think Mi has enough beast to make up for it. If his SBO-qualifying win wasn't enough to convince you, then watch how he used to combo with Fire Kira in AH1.
* Metal Slime (恵子横綱 aka メタルスライム, Kira) - because he has Character AND Arcana Love! Can this combined love overcome the problem of using a mid-tier character with a low-tier Arcana? I believe it can. :wgrin:
Updated my list, adding Time Man to last chance and Gen-chan and Alan White to top 8. (Yes, I'm predicting that a guy who hasn't even qualified yet will make it to top 8. )
Also updated the TOMO video to a more recent one between him and Tanukichi.
I'm pretty confident there will be a Saki player in top 8, but of all the Sakis who qualified I've seen only Tanukichi's Saki, and while it was good, there are 3-week-old videos of Tanukichi playing Angelia rather than Saki! (E.g. see the aforementioned video vs TOMO.) No character love = no top 8. So I put in Alan White as my Saki for top 8.
I finally found a video of Zabieru (Love Saki) vs Arcana Heart HELL (Earth Kira), a sneaky but not hugely impressive Kira player. Zabieru looked pretty good, and I liked his use of the Love Laser, but I don't feel particularly-confident in him making top 8.
wow crazy shit dude, kuroda chokes against K's chun in finals, ino beats the chun, and loses to chinta's ken [this ken ocv'd ko/nuki/rx]...MOV comes back from a 2-1 lead and wins against chinta's ken and saru's yun to win SBO as the anchor for team INO Japan....AND HE DID THIS WITH ONLY 2 FINGERS B/C APPARENTLY HE HAD A BIKE ACCIDENT OR SOMETHING AND HAD A CAST ON HIS RIGHT ARM THE ENTIRE TIME!!!!
well you only reaallly need those 2 fingers for buttons (you shouldnt be using thumb or pinky etc, they're slower and inaccurate), but yea it's just incredible.
There are no more matches to watch, however you can see the full results for every game from the brackets on this page.
AH2 results so far:
We saw bovy vs Furiida full-screen on the live stream, and it was AMAZING! I just became a bovy fan!
Last chance qualifier winners:
ぷにた郎 (Kira) - lost to Nezukichi (Angelia) 1st round あすく == Asuku (Fiona) - lost to Tsunekichi (Petra) 1st round 白アラン == Alan White (Saki) - lost to Gen-chan (Clarice) 1st round へんぼく == Henboku (Lilica) - defeated Metal Slime (Kira) 1st round (fuck ) の部分は女へんに乃王 (Saki) - lost to Kojikichi (Elsa) 1st round くいたん == Kuitan (Clarice) - defeated Pianist (Yoriko) 1st round
Top 8:
bovy (Kira) Nezukichi (Angelia)
Gen-chan (Clarice) TOMO (Catherine)
Tanukichi (Saki) Henboku (Lilica)
Zabieru (Saki) Kuitan (Clarice)
My new predictions:
bovy (KI) > Nezukichi (AN) - bovy was SO SICK in the match from the live stream, so I'm gonna go with him, even though I think the matchup is probably in Angelia's favour (?).
Gen-chan (CL) < TOMO (CA) - Two monsters, match-up probably favours Clarice (?), but I'm gonna go with TOMO since I think he's probably played a lot vs white's Clarice.
Tanukichi (SA) < Henboku (LIL) - Henboku seems to be playing incredibly well, and I'm sure he has a lot of practice vs Alan White's Saki. Moreover, I'm still not a Tanukichi fan, but we'll see.
Zabieru (SA) > Kuitan (CL) - Zabieru beat Tono, so I'm gonna go with him.
For the finals, I think the winner will be either TOMO or Henboku.

He plays Chun in 3S. I don't see how you do s.MK~LP+LK with two fingers, let alone drum method for linking supers. MOV is obviously some sort of magical mechanical man.

You hit the MK like normal and bang the cast across LP+LK...what's so hard?
I'm impressed that after breaking his hand he'd actually train to play with a cast, to the point where he was consistent enough to beat Chinta and Sanu. O_O
Here's some AH2 cosplay from the live stream for you guys to enjoy.

Thumb is a pretty essential finger for throwing ;(
Amazingly, until the finals, Henboku did not lose a SINGLE ROUND to anyone! Henboku (Fire LIL) 2-0 Metal Slime (Metal KI) Henboku (Love LIL) 2-0 Kojikichi (Love EL) Henboku (Love LIL) 2-0 Tanukichi (Love SA) Henboku (Love LIL) 2-0 Kuitan (Bolt CL) Henboku (Love LIL) 2-1 TOMO (Wind CA)
(Man, it sucks that Metal Slime had to go up against the winner-to-be in the first round. =/ )
Full AH2 results: This was copied and pasted from the SBO live stream website. I haven't translated any of it yet. http://www.freewebs.com/bill307/SBO08_AH2_full_results.txt (save to your computer and view in a text editor with a Unicode-capable font)
craziest part about MOV's play is that he can still manage to kara throw using only two fingers, even though it involves hitting st.forward/cl.roundhouse and throw almost simultaneously, while still managing to have reflexes fast enough to allow his SGGK to option select into a super jump cancelled cl.roundhouse -> SA2. This is the first time ever that a chun has really impressed me. Sucks what happened with Kuroda though, you could really tell he was pissed.
so i dont know what his cast situation was like, but could he have pressed mk with middle, and both the lplk with his index that was straightened out? Or did he actually just mash his cast across the buttons lol~

dunno, but the thought of it makes me really wanna buy those dvds :3
Kuroda and Ino must be really good friends/partners with mov though, seeing as they did everything they could to keep mov from needing to play. Obviously paid off in the end. Does anyone have a count on how many teams Ino or Kuroda OCV'ed?
OCV doesn't always mean 3-0 win, it can mean one guy beating the entire team by himself, especially in the context of "how many teams did these specific players OCV?"
If you guys want to read more in detail about 3S's finals/Inoue Japan's games, read forgenjuro's post on srk (http://forums.shoryuken.com/showthread.php?t=162535). It explains how mov figured how to still do Chun's advanced techniques and stuff.
Not only did Boss have the round won (if he wasn't such a metre whore and did EX hayate instead =/ ), he could have blocked or parried the super since he had frame advantage. But it looked like he was starting up another command grab when the super hit him.
