This is all going to get more extreme. And it should. We are living in extreme times. The harm that is being done to all of us by the people in the American government is extreme. To imagine that Mexican immigrants should happily cook for and serve meals to people who enable a man who is determined to demonize and persecute them as subhuman criminals is far more outrageous than the idea that those enablers should not be served in restaurants. I do not believe that Trump administration officials should be able to live their lives in peace and affluence while they inflict serious harms on large portions of the American population. Not being able to go to restaurants and attend parties and be celebrated is just the minimum baseline here. These people, who are pushing America merrily down the road to fascism and white nationalism, are delusional if they do not think that the backlash is going to get much worse. Wait until the recession comes. Wait until Trump starts a war. Wait until the racism this administration is stoking begins to explode into violence more frequently. Read a fucking history book. Read a recent history book. The U.S. had thousands of domestic bombings per year in the early 1970s. This is what happens when citizens decide en masse that their political system is corrupt, racist, and unresponsive. The people out of power have only just begun to flex their dissatisfaction. The day will come, sooner that you all think, when Trump administration officials will look back fondly on the time when all they had to worry about was getting hollered at at a Mexican restaurant. When you aggressively fuck with people’s lives, you should not be surprised when they decide to fuck with yours. Stop working for this man. Stop enabling him. Stop assisting him. Start fighting him. The people who are responsible for what is happening are not going to get out of this with their happy wealthy respectable lives unscathed. This is a country that locks poor people in cages for decades for trying to make $20. This is a country that is “tough on crime.” Remember? And the ones who make the laws are not going to like what happens when America starts to regard them as the criminals.
Here's a long agitprop article I have found (with no fucking paragraphs). I'm putting it here not necessarily because I agree with it, but because it sums up the current leftist dissatisfaction quite nicely. Its worth noting that there isn't mention of civility or standards of behaviour. It really is a balls to the wall rage against the current administration and if this is a common feeling in America I am pretty concerned for how this Presidency is going to turn out. The left are out for blood, and in my eyes the right can't complain given that their entire movement for the whole of this decade has been about triggering the left. They're triggered now, enjoy it.
You think the “entire movement for the whole of this decade has been about triggering the left?” Damn. Are you included in this group, because most people of your ideological stripe I talk to claim the lead up to Trump was a departure from prior movements. This is in opposition of some decade-long trigger fest that predated Trump ascending the GOP by five years. Ridiculous.
I think some people just get their rocks off feeling triggered by everything. Trump did a “look at those losers doing that” in 2015 and rose to fame and eventually power. Yes, I’m enjoying the hysteria and total meltdown from people that supposedly are my moral betters. They hurt their own viewpoint catching on with every idiotic woke stance.
OK not the whole decade, basically the last 4-5 years. The point still stands. The right loved it when it was libtard tears they were getting, they aren't too keen on how that developed though. Its almost as if people can't stomach the obvious consequences of being as obnoxious as possible and insisting that your leaders are the same.
the republicans kinda started doing it in the early 90s; it's just been getting steadily worse since then. but only started getting really bad recently. saying whole decade is fine imho; since it really started getting heavier with the tea party movement which was getting big in '10.
too bad the justices ruled that way on the fake abortion centers issue. did they have at least a decent reasoning? or not?
The law that was written to deal with them was not great. It was way to broad. The appropriate venue would have been to build a case against them for false advertising and deceptive business(non-profits still have to obey laws) practices.

ok; reasonable enough ruling then.
I need to read over the full text, but it doesn't seem like the worst. Like a lot of CA laws, they start with good intentions and end up shooting the MOOOOOOOON. Because writing laws is staggeringly hard and the legislative process is also a huge challenge. None of this stuff is easy. We get to good laws through a process of attrition and sometimes legislative brilliance.

Yes something like 3-4 years you can point to a movement. At one end, indifference to the shock and outrage, and at the other end, deliberate provocation of the hysteria to the amusement of how little it takes these days.
Now, for the flip side. The illiberal left got real preachy towards the end of the Bush administration and the course of the Obama administration. “We’re on the right side of history,” you’re all a bunch of racists and oppressors. Check your privilege, whitey. Only the poor and minorities are deserving of compassion, and the white poor don’t count. Praise be to demographic destiny. We’re the ones that knows what’s best for the lot of you; you dummies can’t even act in your own best interest. All that.
The reaction to this has been stunning. Oh, McCain and Romney are racists and misogynists, are they? Alright, now that those words mean nothing, here’s a guy that will really make you holler. Cry wolf more. We’re all to be divided by victim hood and oppression ladders? Well, we still have the vote and some numbers, so how about the neglected white working class starts assuming it’s own group identity for its own interests. Is the only moral internationalism an America-last policy? Let’s put American interests back first to show our voices and opinion count within our involvement in the international neoliberal world order. Is it illegal immigration now and forever? We’d rather see zero + deportations than de-facto open borders.
In short, a useful correction, and absolutely positively a necessary correction, but an over-correction with a side of stupid populist tariffs. Populism is the last emergency brake lever against a system of elites ruling in their own interests and in those of the politically well-connected. And it gets real stupid and damaging real fast. Jonathan Haidt has the best understanding I’ve seen from a member of the left that gives due credit to both sides, for members that seek a better understanding from somebody that holds many of their own preconceptions of the world.
surely when you say correction you mean it in the same sense the market ‘corrects.’ not because the stock market plummeting is a move in the right direction, but rather as a means of describing a cyclical trend.
Speaking of court cases: I recently learned something about the american criminal court system that kind of blew my mind. In 24 states judges use math models to guide sentencing (See e.g. https://rss.onlinelibrary.wiley.com/doi/full/10.1111/rssa.12227). These programs get fed input like "Are any of your family members convicted of crimes", "When was the first time you had an interaction with the police" (nice combo with stop and frisk here), "Your zip code" (presumably another proxy for skin color xp) and a host of other things that would never be allowed to be brought up in a court room, but apparently the judge is free to consider them at his pleasure during sentencing as long as 'math' is involved.
I am trying to square this in my mind with the supreme court's apparent aversion to "mathematical gobbledygook" but so far I haven't gotten anywhere.
Is this common knowledge and I am just ignorant? I have never heard people talk about this before.
Every time these rants takes place, I am reminded that some people are railing against a fictional version of the left that exits mostly on youtube and social media. It is grievance against a perception of the “Left” rather that some real offence that can be pointed to. It is akin to disliking the someone who doesn’t drink at the party because that person must be judging everyone who does drink.

Yeah, I'm not sure who he's even talking to anymore. Not to mention he never touched the whole "the people upset by children being thrown in cages are the real snowflakes, and are hurting their cause by being upset" thing.
You guys are kinda missing it. Sure California is known for writing bad laws. But here's the thing. They intended it to go after these clinics. All this talk about laws or proclamations with discriminatory intent, but no one seems open to the possibility that bad intent is precisely what was motivating the lawmakers in CA who enacted this law. This is CA, they knew what they were doing.

I am going to apply this same logic to the pregnancy crisis centers. They are bad actors intent on deceiving desperate women through false advertising. And they are using religious expression as a shield to defend their gross attempts at deception.
See how this cynical view is not productive because it can be turned right back on you?

Yes, this law purposefully targets 'clinics' that withhold information about their options from pregnant women and stall their request for abortions until such a time where it is no longer legally allowed.
If you think that's a bad thing then i'm sorry but your simply wrong.
I'm all for California doing something to target CPC's. They are a major obstacle that stands between a pregnant woman, and actually knowing what her options are, and don't actually have any training or special services to offer, just the drive to deceive women into keeping a child that they may not want, or shouldn't be having. Their goal is to keep these women blind.
I do t have more time, but it's amusing that this is chalked up as a mistake, while laws we don't like (drug offenses, voter rolls, immigration proclamations, take your pick) are obviously the result of bad intent.
You should see the requirements of the law and you'll understand Kennedy's skepticism in oral arguments. (If my memory serves it was him).

If the law is badly written then sure, strike it down. But the intent of wanting to stop business that pretend to be clinics and purposefully feed false or missing information is a worthy one.

The difference is that evidence is provided when we claim laws we don’t like have bad intent. In the case of NC, there are several court rulings that spell out that bad intent. In the case of immigration, we only need to look at its current champions, Trump, Miller and Good old boy Sessions. Unlike your claim with its vague aspersions on the CA legislature with little substantive evidence behind it.
And you continue to avoid the issue that many of these crisis centers are deceptive.

Even if the grievances were valid, they're not a valid reason for voting for someone who you're, at this point, and mostly by omission, admitting is a terrible and racist person (and even the right will be acknowledging his puppetry-to-Putin before he's gone). It's Excuse-Making 101. "They called Mitt racist, so we elected a more real racist." Oh, k. And that proves... that we're right? Doesn't it? If you wanted to prove us wrong you would've elected a decent person. This isn't an argument, it's an excuse for one's own poor behavior. "I vote for the world's leaders almost entirely out of spite over hurt feelings." Like you're more concerned about your fragile pride than actually defending your vote. The priority here is that people respect your opinions regardless of how terrible they are, without even defending actual opinion. We must respect them, regardless of all else. It's a threat.
It's like when you call someone out for being an asshole -- they're usually going to prove you right, if they're an asshole. If they're not an asshole, you might up looking like the asshole. But if they do respond predictably like an asshole, well, that certainly doesn't mean you weren't right to say it, or that it wasn't simply true all along. Quite the opposite. They think they're proving something, but the simple truth is, they just need to think that. Because why else shouldn't you call them out? They're not just going to admit their own lack of character. It's a simple and predictable defense from people with little else to stand on. Enjoy it, Danglars.
And yes, you very obviously placed yourself in a cesspit of history. No one in the world is looking kindly on this. Unless you're a Cossack-enthusiast or something. Have you seen Trump's overseas' polls?

But apparently the commission’s statements about religion were very important in the Masterpiece case. It would seem that all religions are not treated equally in the eyes conservatives Justices. Especially when it comes to government officials disparaging those religion. A more cynical person would question if those justices view disparaging statements about their own religion as more serious than disparaging statements about other religions.
First, the cases were at different stages in their proceedings. The Masterpiece case had a fully developed record. This case is at preliminary, pre-discovery proceedings, and the Court only decided to lift the preliminary injunction. No decision was made on the merits. Second, this case concerns foreign policy issues, which makes it much harder to uphold the preliminary injunction. Finally, the statements used and relied upon in the Masterpiece case were really, really bad and demonstrated discriminatory animus as applied on a case by case basis. There's no record of that happening here (yet).
Except for the President’s public statements on the issue. I do not find it encouraging that the conservative justices set aside all of his statements when deciding the injunction. When the full case reaches the court, I half expect them to do it again.
The underlying problem with them setting aside the public statements of the president about the ban and Muslims is that it sets up a clear divide between the written justification behind the executive branches order and the public statements of the head of the executive branch. In a sense, doublethink, where the presidents says the exact opposite of what the justification for the executive order were.
The full case has not been decided, but I am not encouraged by the trajectory of the court on these issues. From undoing the voter’s rights act to this, they seem to be retreating from upholding safeguards to protect the homogeneity of our nation. I will be surprised if they do anything but uphold the travel ban that was overtly created to target Muslims.
What the president said is irrelevant when you have a facially neutral ban. The ban only applies to like seven predominantly Muslim countries that failed to comply with State Department requests for cooperation, plus North Korea (same reasons). Let's just presume for a second that Trump wants to eliminate all Muslim travel to the US. If that's the goal, the current travel ban does a pretty piss poor job of accomplishing that goal.
The attacks on the ban amount to little more than a leftist temper tantrum. President Trump said something mean about Muslims, so he needs to be challenged on it. And that's fine, but the travel ban is not the proper target of liberal ire. Now maybe the plaintiffs will find evidence of discriminatory animus against Muslims in how the travel ban is being applied, but I highly doubt that will be the case.
Now your position makes so much more sense. It's completely ridiculous, but at least now I can slightly understand how you reconcile your position with the reality it's disconnected from.
That's literally how the decades of state violence and oppression against vulnerable citizens was justified.
Also did someone really argue McCain isn't racist? Like McCain is far from the worst the Republicans have to offer but the guy is unabashedly racist.
"I hate the gooks. I will hate them as long as I live."
Yeah, that guy totally isn't racist. Just like the laws aren't, the police aren't and neither are the positions of the people supporting Trump. None of it is racist and it's all a way for marginalized people to get off. Because being fake oppressed and exploited is the way we enjoy life, and is no way a desperate plea for white people to check their brothers and sisters and have them treat us like equal human beings.
I can understand why people like xDaunt and Danglars would think that kind of trash, they are just absolutely and dangerously wrong.
