I'd still try to help when I could, but sometimes I'd just sleep when I got home from work (around midnight). Requiring your children to work is one thing, but having a huge conniption over something this insignificant is ridiculous.

Regarding your family, here is what I think: I understand why you might rather read, but you really should have gone out to do the yardwork as soon as you knew it was being done. You handled neither of the women in your house correctly. When your sister comes to your room, how you respond depends on how she starts. If she goes, "Dad is working outside, please help him," then your response should be, "I'll be down in just a second." Reach for a bookmark and she'll probably leave. Find a good place to stop real quick and then get out there. If she goes, "You lazy ass, dad is outside busting his butt, blah blah blah," then you go, "Oh, dad is outside working? Someone should have told me." This takes all the blame off of you and if she continues riding you, then it makes her the obvious villain. Your mother came because your sister snitched. Here's a secret: even if secretly your mom agrees with you, 9 times out of 10 she will side with your dad. From her perspective, she's protecting her family by protecting her husband, your father. He's getting old, you are younger and stronger. She's just been informed that you know your dad is working but you won't lift a finger. She is therefore mad. After you go out, certainly your sister will complain, certainly she will do less work. For starters, you are the guy and therefore stronger. Any guy who has been through puberty should be able to bench 100 lbs even if he's never been to a gym in his whole fucking life. Any guy in good fitness can bench 1.5 times his bodyweight. A normal girl can bench maybe half her bodyweight at most. You really just have to deal with it. Count the points in your head, but never tell; have pride that you are stronger. If she starts bitching at your performance while working, tune her out completely as best you can. If she continues, a simple "You could be a little nicer you know," is all you need. Yet again, you said nothing wrong. Your sister and mom seem to have a good repoire. It seems like they are the gossipy, naggy type. If they call you a lazy ass right after you finished working, say something like, "It's not nice to criticize someone right after they worked real hard." Or if you are really pissed, "If you're going to insult me right after I did all that work for you, then perhaps next time I shouldn't do the work at all? Either way you will insult me, but at least that way I won't be tired and sore right before work." That will maybe get you grounded, but it will help make clear that they are at fault, whether they want to admit it or not.
