Ok, can we talk about extensions? Commenting in the Skype group never seems to go anywhere.
Personally, I consider a week to be the point where you look at a temporary sub. We have at least three active or recently-active players in TL9 who are not in TL8. It also wouldn’t be unreasonable for FX to multibox given the sizes of both nations. 1 day notice for a week extension is very short.
I think we have bigger problems with the way extensions are happening, but we need to deal with this first, especially since the most recent ninja extension means we've missed 22:31.

the turn today is set for the 22:31 GMT, so theoretically I can send 1 more turn.

before this i just asked for an extension for less than 24 hours. after that the game went with 1 extension for 6 days that we didn't asked. and then many extension for 3 days. I've always sent my turn really quick. the rules could had be set in 36 hours no eztension but nobody talked about this before the game. aand i don't accept that all those miniextension have no problem. but this mine have all the problems.

Sorry, multiboxing was a bit hectic for me since I travelled through half of France to attend a wedding. I had a lot of trouble even sending my own turns through the internet wasteland.
In any case, 24 hour notice for an extension is fine in my book; it's the unexplained extensions one or two hours before the deadline that are not. That, and the procrastinators hitching on extensions not meant for them and dragging out the turn timer. I've been guilty of this before, unfortunately.

Yes, I agree.
The normal pattern seems to be: - A player privately asks for, say, an 18h extension. - The game gets extended by 24h without public explanation, presumably to preserve anonymity. - The player was being conservative, so they get their turn in at +12h. - We wait another 12h pointlessly. - All the usual suspects put their turns in at +23:49. - Someone is afk, and we extend for another +6h. - We finally get a turn at +30h, +18h from when the actual extending player submitted.
It's probably about time TL8 went to 48h, maybe later this week, but if we do that I'd like to see less extensions and a lot less procrastination.
Is there anything you can do about the hitching? Have you guys tried like an extension tax or something? Maybe a bit drastic but it seems to be a fairly intractable problem.

The problem imo is that most people have summer break/holidays now. You can't simply forget about that, most people do have somewhat of a real life.
|
Another thing to note is that TL8 is a disciples game and as such has unavoidable internal diplomacy. It doesn't excuse laziness, but there is additional time taken compared to a FFA game like TL9. Although, some people just need to be slapped to send in their turn; it's partly why the skype group was conceived in the first place.

Of course. Actual things happening irl is what extensions are for. I think a week was pretty long but people being away is unavoidable and not the issue. The issue is that the procrastinators obviously aren't away and can put in their turns, since they regularly show up at the 11th hour regardless of when that is.
If anything, summer makes it more important to use the time when people are not away. For example, Xuanzue could have submitted before he left and we would have got another 1-2 turns done, but we procrasto-extended the turn before and then we were stuck.
The consensus seems to be that there's a problem but it's too hard to fix. I think most people have now made their positions clear, and it looks like I'm alone in wanting to try to do something about it. That's fine.
I do think we should go to 48h by the end of the week though.

Well, apparently my ISP decided things had been working for far too long, and so since todays late afternoon my net is down. Tried to wait for it to come back but..... T_T so now i need another extension for tl9, hopefully only 24 hours. Tomorrow if the line isn't repaired yet, i'll post again with an ETA or i'll look for a sub... Sorry for the inconvenience. (Also don't have have skype on my tablet)

Starting to look for a permanent replacement for Xibalba in TL9, it's about turn 54, the general position is a lot of resources and things but caught in a massive shitfest 1v2 war. If you're interested, Ill send you the turn file so you can check it out properly.
a sub found! A certain 4chan person who goes by the name of rockpaperhammock will be taking over me.

So. Since TLX is starting to be talked about quite a bit in the Skype chat, I feel it's better to put things in concrete form here. General consensus is for an MA game, but let's get the polls out to gauge interest. Of course, please vote only if you are interested in playing. Since setting up games always takes a while, we might as well start now.
Poll: TLX AgeMA (5) 56% EA (3) 33% LA (1) 11% 9 total votes Your vote: TLX Age (Vote): EA (Vote): MA (Vote): LA
Poll: TLX Game TypeNormal (9) 90% Disciples (1) 10% Random (0) 0% Disciples Random (0) 0% 10 total votes Your vote: TLX Game Type (Vote): Normal (Vote): Random (Vote): Disciples (Vote): Disciples Random
Poll: TLX DiplomacyAnything goes (i.e. Skype and all that) (7) 70% No diplomacy (2) 20% In-game diplomacy only (1) 10% 10 total votes Your vote: TLX Diplomacy (Vote): Anything goes (i.e. Skype and all that) (Vote): In-game diplomacy only (Vote): No diplomacy
If you could post with map preferences, that would be useful as well. As to my map preference: Peliwyr, depending on amount of people. Wraparound recommended.

Picked up this game recently, I've only played against AIs but interested in multiplayer. I might get rolled but at least I should learn a lot about the game :p
I just want to know how long you have between turns to see if I have the time to play and keep a diplomatic presence.

in TL8 we've had like 3 turns in 1 month.
|
Hey, a new face! Turn times are usually 24 hours until about year 3 (turn 36) where they transition to 48 hours, because of the additional scripting complexity at higher research levels. This does mean that a game tends to last several months, even if you only really need an internet connection to send and receive the turns by email. Diplomacy requirements are variable; the most diplomacy happens around turn 10-15 where you meet all your neighbors, and when someone is clearly above everyone else (i.e. for ganging up).
For TL8, there's an ongoing sub problem and apparently many people want to call the game since LT/Belisarius are in a commanding lead. I would recommend a poll from the remaining players (I'm eliminated) to determine this.

Poll: Call TL8 for Midgard/Ulm?Yes (4) 100% No (0) 0% 4 total votes Your vote: Call TL8 for Midgard/Ulm? (Vote): Yes (Vote): No
If no, please feel free to suggest how we deal with the staling thing. I'm quite happy to keep playing, but we really should resolve things either way.
For TL10, just want to put it on record that I'd be in, but only if it starts mid October or later.

What is the point in a poll? You can't see who voted etc?
Anyway, Entro and Me (and thus Sunaj) have agreed, afaik adam did as well... Leaves only Abyssia, whos teammate is dead and he is down to less than a handful provinces, and shloob/mayi, who basically staled out

You can finish the game then.
But come on, all cti's patala xibalba pythium, went full simcity and they had the resources to put a fight against ulm/midgard. same with the staler team. seems like they went happy taking just the tienchi capital.

C'tis and patala went after agartha, it's why midgaard and ulm beat me (atlantis) and agartha so badly
The map was pretty awkward though, several teams just got rip'd by spawns, as i'm sure you're acutely aware :p
