Amazing work as always from Pachi
We took sixteen of Starcraft’s best and pitted them against each other in brutal competition. After the first round, eight of them had fallen. After the second round four more players were removed. Then on Wednesday, the remaining four was reduced to two. Now, two of the strongest players in Starcraft are set to do battle.
The GomTV Star Invitational has been a resounding success for everyone. We have been treated to some of the highest quality games over the past two weeks, but the real clincher was the amazing commentary by Tasteless. The folks over at Gretech have done an amazing job with this tournament, and I think we’ve all been a little bit spoiled by lag-free streams! Whether or not events like this are brought to us in English in the future is still up in the air, but this has been a great chapter in Starcraft history.
With that aside though, we are here to discuss what the tournament is really about: The Starcraft, and all that is left is the upcoming finals between Flash and Stork. These players are two of the best players out there at the moment. Stork has been showing inspirational play since 2005 and has never failed to impress - whether it’s his beautiful Hallucination/Arbiter play on 815 to his more standard macro play. While Flash has swept up many fan as a result of his recent games - he is playing intelligent and smart, and solid Starcraft. No matter who wins on Saturday we will undoubtedly be treated to a good entertaining struggle for superiority.
Daigomi and Plexa will walk you through the series, offering their worthless insight into each of the games of the series and give you an unbiased opinion on who is going to win this tournament.
Many people fail to see that Flash is an innovator. He is a Terran who is eager to shake things up and try new things. This has lead to some interesting play in his time; he showed us some nice moves against Bisu on Monty Hall, his firebat rush was delectable and he is always subtly changing the way he TvP’s. Recently Flash has started the +1 rush trend amongst Terrans, but he has also lead the charge against Katrina with some inspired play. Because Flash is an innovator, he probably has plans for at least one of these games, but seeing as he’s had about 3 days to prepare I don’t think he’ll have this mapped out to game 5.
Game 1:
Flash has proven a strong contender on Katrina in the past, his faster goliaths have changed the way Terran’s play this map and each game they get closer to cracking the Protoss defense. Iris looked so close against Stork last time, and I think Flash will get closer. Flash is smart enough to win if Stork plays standard – but something tells me Stork will change it up for the finals.
Game 2:
This will be a hard set to prepare for for Flash. Stork has an arsenal of cheeses, rushes and unorthodox strategy coupled with sick macro play which will force Flash to prepare against every possible situation. Flash has no choice given the time constraints but to practice a solid game here or an all in. I don’t see Flash performing such a build here, rather he will try to play solid and bounce anything Stork sends to him.
Game 3:
Baekmagoji is an opportunity for Flash to explore alternate ideas. If Flash is 1-1 by this point I’m expecting some unorthodox build from him. Perhaps an all in rush or proxy. He should avoid at all costs getting into a lategame situation because Stork’s carrier control on this map is better than it is on Katrina.
Game 4:
This set is Katrina revisited, and that means a few things. Either; Flash is 2-1 up or Stork is 2-1 up. I don’t like Flash’s chances either way on this map. The 2nd iteration of Katrina will likely be a fairly standard game from both players. Flash will use a nice timing push build against Stork’s 2 base Carrier. The game should be intense and very close – but Stork’s carrier control is fearsome. Thus, the longer this game goes the worse it gets for Flash so if his initial push come out even, there isn’t much hope for him in the long run.
Game 5:
The fifth set is so much more about mental determination than any other factor. If you are at this set then you are against an opponent of relatively equal skill which means it can go either way. The stronger mental will, strength, perseverance and determination will decide this game. Flash is relatively inexperienced in going to the fifth set in a series, and that will work against him. In all honesty, Stork wants this more. He’s got more to prove than Flash and will be putting everything out there on the line to win. Couple this with Flash’s nerves and inexperience and it tells me that he’s not going to win. The map being Blue Storm means that the stronger player will win on this map – sadly I don’t think its going to be the KTF hero.
Plexa
The first game will set the tone for the rest of the match. Flash has historically not been great under pressure, and he tends to lose confidence and go for all in strats once he starts losing. With that said, I think he has a difficult first game.
The first game will depend a lot on scouting for Flash, as Stork has many builds available to him, and Flash needs to counter these builds effectively if he wants to stay in the game.
I expect Flash to open with a FE into goliaths with range and weapons tech early on. This build has proven to be effective on Katrina for Flash, and it offers many advantages. Firstly, the build allows the Terran player to have a sizeable goliath force by the time carriers arrive, as little resources are wasted on vultures.
Secondly, the fast weapon tech makes the goliaths much more viable against carriers when carriers arrive, and also makes tanks more dangerous on the timing push.
The final advantage that goliaths offer Flash is protection against drops early on. Goliaths are fairly effective against anything that comes out of a shuttle early on, as well as the shuttle itself, which prevents Stork from abusing his reaver micro.
As things are with Flash, you can never discard a cheese. Flash might go for a bunker rush (which I don’t think has really been done before, other than UpMagic’s rush against Bisu) or a double proxy rax build against Stork. Vulture drops are also a possibility.
Game 2
The game on Blue Storm will be very interesting. In my opinion, there are only two strats that Flash will consider. The first build is his standard TvP goliath build. This build prevents Stork from going carriers (so to speak), and also protects Flash in the beginning. If Flash goes early goliath I’ll expect him to go for a drawn out macro war, with Flash using the minimum number of troops he needs to remain safe, while trying to expand as much as often.
The second possible build I can see Flash going for is a very early push. This push can be from Stork’s minimum choke with tanks just shelling his nexus, or can happen directly after Stork takes his mineral only, and will be a slightly slower push. If Flash gets vultures early on I would expect him to go for this strategy.
A final option (which I’ve never seen Flash do, but is possible) for Flash is to play a game style similar to Sea in Sea’s recent game against Bisu. Sea abused dropships and vultures to harass Bisu, containing Bisu in his own base. This harass style play is not typical from Flash, but the build proved to be very effective, and I can see Flash considering it on Blue Storm.
Game 3
Baekmagoji is a dreadful map for this particular matchup, and Flash will be well aware of that. Terran has won less than a third of its games in the matchup. I think there is a very high probability that Flash will pull of some sort of cheese on the map.
If Flash does not go cheese on the map I’d expect him to use a vulture intensive build, similar to the one he used against Mind. The multiple routes of the map will make vultures effective against Protoss, especially once the game enters the middle stage.
Flash will have to play aggressively if he wants to stay in the game, and in his timing will have to be perfect to take this game away from Stork.
Game 4
The second game on Katrina will be hard to predict, as the results from the first games will have a big impact. If Flash is under pressure he might do something foolish, and play too aggressively. On the other hand, if Flash is in a good position, I expect him to play a slow macro game with goliaths and tanks.
This game has a very good chance of being the deciding game, for both players. Whoever goes into the game with an advantage has a good shot of taking the series, as both players have historically done badly under pressure.
Stork will be under further pressure, even if he wins the first game, as he might feel the need to do something different the second game around. If this happens and Stork plays a build out of desperation, I think Flash has a good shot at taking the game as long as he keeps his cool.
Game 5
The decider. If the match gets this far then I would give Flash the advantage. Flash might never have played a Bo5, but I’m not sure if Stork has ever won a Bo5 on the last game. If the game gets to this point we might see some mistakes creep into Stork’s play, and it will be up to Flash to take advantage of that.
If Flash gets to this stage he probably won his previous game on Blue Storm. In such a case I expect Flash to repeat his strategy, or to play a slow macro based game. If Flash did not win his first game on Blue Storm I’d expect him to play more aggressively in his second game, not sitting back, and perhaps even proxying.
The final match will be a very difficult psychological battle for both players, and it’s hard to predict what each player would do in such a situation. Flash seems determined to win, and because of that I’ll give the advantage to him if it gets this far.

Any last words?
-I want to thank my teammates who helped me with practice. This time I practiced a lot with Stork so I hope he will make it to the finals too.

Game 1: I expect Stork to open with a DT build into arbiters. Flash seems to have learnt how to handle carriers on the map, and his timing attacks have been near impossible to stop recently. Using arbiters, Pusan played a beautiful game on Katrina where he was able to take over the map while constantly keeping Terran contained due to recalls. I expect a similar strategy from Stork, although Stork’s carrier micro is so phenomenal that he just might go straight up carriers.
Game 2: In their previous meeting, Stork’s reaver harass failed badly, so I do not expect him to try the same strategy again. I expect Stork will open with a standard build (perhaps even two gate goons) into an expansionist game, where Stork is constantly ahead in bases. We might see some carriers again, although Stork doesn’t seem to like carriers much on Blue Storm.
Game 3: This matchup is very good for Protoss, and I expect another game with quick arbiters. Stork has been using fast carriers on the map as well, but I do not think he will try it against Flash, as the strat is risky, and a single mistake could lose him the important third game.
Game 4: The second game on Katrina is harder to predict and depends a lot on the result of the first game. If things are going badly for Stork I’d expect a carrier type build, as he depends a lot on carriers to get him out of trouble. I think this could prove to be a mistake. If the match is going well I expect a more unorthodox solution from Stork like a drawn out macro game (which is unorthodox for Protoss on Katrina) which starts with reaver harass. I don’t think this is a good idea either, as I don’t believe Protoss can win a game on Katrina without going air. The corridors are just too strong for tanks. All in all, I think Stork will avoid using the same strategy as in the first game, even if he won the first game, and I think this might prove to be a mistake.
Game 5: The final game of the series could prove a tough game for Stork. I expect a return to reavers, followed by early game pressure. Stork will feel under pressure to finish the series, and will go for a more aggressive build. DT drops might also be used.
In my opinion this season is Stork’s last shot at taking a starleague, and in order to take a starleague he will have to beat Flash. The games will be intense, and I am looking forward to seeing some magical micro by Stork.
Daigomi
Katrina, as we all know, is a ridiculous Protoss haven. That being said Terrans are coming closer to defeating Protosses in each successive game. If there was a Terran to buck the trend it would be Flash without a doubt. Against any other Protoss I would’ve given Flash the edge, but this is Stork. Stork’s PvT is unmatched and that makes him the firm favorite on this map.
I doubt Stork will use two base carrier this time around, simply because this map is reused at game 4. Most likely he’ll play some sort of timing rush against Flash, who will be performing a timing rush of his own to counter the 2 base carrier that will never come. Even if Stork doesn’t timing rush Flash, I’m reasonably sure this game will deviate from the standard Katrina PvT – simply because the maps are so good for Stork and he can easily catch Flash off guard here.
Game 2
Last time the two met on this map Flash was doing an excellent job against an underwhelming Stork. Stork then kicked it up 10 gears and proceeded to dominate him like a D- noob on iCCup. The map is a nicely balanced PvT map and that works in Stork’s favor. The longer the game goes on this map, the more likely Stork is to win – is this if he can keep Flash’s expansions in check.
Stork can do a variety of things on this map. He’s got a full array of cheesy openings which he can exploit; he’s used a different build every time on this map so far this tournament. If Stork wins game 1 I expect him to use an elaborate all in here, similar to how he dismantled Sea with a nice proxy robo. However, if he loses game 1, I expect him to follow a safer route and play to out-macro Flash after a gas rush.
Game 3
Stork has played five PvT’s on Baekmagoji, and won all five. He’s got his own particular style on this map as well. He will often build his first pylon outside his main in a hidden location – this is to throw off the Terran and to trick him into thinking that there could be a proxy somewhere. This forces the Terran to play somewhat safer than he usually would.
The problem here is that Flash and Stork have practiced together quite a bit, thus this trick may not throw Flash off at all. There are two options here for Stork then, play his normal standard game, or actually proxy. Now I doubt on the third set he is going to proxy so he’ll probably play a standard game. Stork’s standard play here generally is aggressive carriers or macro. Lately he’s tended to use the aggressive carrier strategy and that’s what I think he’ll do this time. This is a great map for Carriers and Flash will know this. Yet I have my utmost faith in Stork to pull off a 3-0 simply because his control is superior.
Game 4
Now we return to Katrina. This game will be all about standard play in my opinion. Stork is confident in his mid to late game play and will probably be on this map 2-1 up and will want to avoid going to Blue Storm – thus is makes perfect sense that he will play a straight up macro game to seal the win for him 3-1. If Stork didn’t play obscurely in Game 1 then he could possibly do something here, taking into consideration Flash’s play in the first set. But I think the temptation to play solid to stomp out Flash before set 5 is too tempting for him.
Game 5
Honestly, if we see a Game 5 I will be surprised. If we are here it means that Flash won on Katrina and another map or Blue Storm and Baekmagoji, or in the most unlikely way –twice on Katrina. There’s no way that Stork will lose this game on Blue Storm if it comes to it. Flash has never been taken to a full 5 games before and is likely to get nervous/exhausted by this stage. Stork should be experienced in the art of bo5’s so should have the mental edge. The mental edge should be the tipping point for Stork if it turns up that Flash has miraculously improved his TvP and drawn the series at 2-2.
Sorry Flash, I like you, but I don’t see you walking out of this final victorious. My bet is 3-0 to Stork. (Stork has dropped one game this entire tournament).

You advanced to the finals with a 3-0 victory.
-Actually, while I was practicing I told myself not to lose 0-3. I played practice matches with Flash yesterday and it helped me a lot. Because of that I was able to decide for a build easily. Iris (Berserker) played like Flash had predicted it. When I lost 3-0 in the last Starleague's semifinals it really hurt me a lot, so I am happy that I could take revenge this time.
In the second game you made an impressive comeback and won the match with carriers.
-When I was upgrading the 2nd attack upgrade, my cybernetics core got destroyed so it was very hard to fight the goliaths. I thought it will be really hard because Iris (Berserker) had so many units but because he controlled his units too hastily I was able to turn around the game.

In the first and third game you attempted very risky strategies
-I have used the build that was used in the first game a lot on Bluestorm. When the entrance is blocked I have no chance to win but when Iris comes out at the top the entrance is not blocked[?]. So I made a bold decision. The build I used in the 3rd game is a build that I mainly used on cultivation period and because I had good winning percentages with it in the practice games I thought that I would be able to win with it to make it 3-0.

In the finals you will face Flash
-Inspite of our record against each other Flash is the one player who really pressures me a lot. I am very much intimidated that I will have to face Flash in the finals, but through practice I will regain my confidence and win for sure.

We heard that you practiced with Flash
-Personally I think it was complicated to practice with him. It is possible that we face each other in Starleague and there are similar maps, but Flash suggested we should practice together. So we practiced and I think I gained a lot from it.
Your mindset for the finals
-You get a medal for WCG, there is no trophy. Even though this is an event tournament (no official tournament) I really want to win and get a trophy this time. I also think that winning a tournament in which the 16 best players of Korea participated in is a great honor/glory.
Is there something that helps you to maintain such good results
The practice with my teammates on a high level helps us to develop together. Also my teammates' advice are a great help. Because I know very well how bad it feels to have no good results, I have a great will to not lose again. The mindset of hating to lose was the key to my steady good results.

-Some last words
I want to thank STX's Sheis, KTF's Flash as well as my team's Terrans for helping with practice. Jangbi lost in the MSL Semifinals yesterday so he is very sad. I would be happy if the fans would engourage and cheer for him so he can regain his strength.
- Thanks to snowbird for formatting the interview
So, two very different opinions on the same set of games. Plexa started this news report by saying that we will both try to remain impartial, and we have. I guess only the results will tell which one was truly impartial! Until then, here are our final predictions:
