Alright, so I started this one off with a bit of a lie, the car isn't fucked, I am just not interested in fixing the beast. Much to the chagrin of MDJ, I will be saying goodbye to my 1997 VW Jetta hopefully sooner rather than later. I went to go start the old girl Tuesday afternoon, and lo and behold the starter had gone out. Having tried a bit of percussive maintenance on that bit of the engine (per the advice of automotive bible that is Youtube), I called AAA and had the old girl pulled back to my house took some requisite photos of some of the less than appealing cosmetic damages/odometer and put it on Craigslist for a reasonable price considering.
Minnesota is hard on cars for multiple reasons. Road Salt and snow being first and foremost, dumbass drivers in snow coming in a close second. Side mirror lost courtesy of your local snow plow driver, bumper cracked, and front quarter panel both dinged in hit and runs. You can actually see a small TL sticker I put on the car two or so years ago.
While by the time I got my hands on this car she wasn't the prettiest thing on the road, but despite her being old enough to vote she did only just break 102,000 miles this year; a fact that I am banking on to salvage some of the private sale value. It is my hope I find some VW obsessed individual looking for a Mark II era project to sink his teeth into, but we'll see.
Aw Yiss.
The bottom line is I just didn't have the money, interest, or use the car enough to justify the repair this time around. I saw the car through a few, major electric fixes (distributor, ignition switch, alternator), most things you would expect to have to repair on a car of this particular vintage. Though with my no longer needing the car for daily commutes, you may have seen my blog about the light rail line that is less that a mile from my house, it had become a fifty dollar per month donation to Geico. I probably only put $10 dollars into the tank in the last two months, and it just wasn't getting used.
Oddly enough, I have gotten a slight feeling of liberation from the prospect of selling the now defunct Jetta. In the few years that I've owned it, as generally reliable of a vehicle as it has been, the prospect and cost of it breaking down has been a source of consternation and anxiety. The latter becoming especially bad of incredible stupid shit, like coming back and finding a ticket on the windshield. I shit you not that thought kept me up for an hour and a half one night at the cabin this last weekend.
I am looking forward to being able to pocket some cash, and put a few more digits between my bank balance and $0.00 (or worse). I've a karmic knack, it would seem for getting myself in a reasonable position, only to be hit by a lovely $500 bill for something or another, and a bit of car coinage would provide a a welcome repas from my undue worrying about money.
For now, public transit will continue to be my chariot. I'll stop by groceries a bit more often, which will hopefully mean a bit more healthy eating, I'll walk some more which is always good, and I won't have to worry about any of the headaches you are obligated to mind when you own a rather dated bit of German engineering. All I have to worry about are my OCD like checks for wallet, phone, bus pass and keys before exiting the bus or train. XD. Though the absolute best part about not having a car in a state with shit Winters, and this may sound counter intuitive, is not having to worry needlessly about whether or not my car has been towed or damaged due to weather conditions. If there were a professional league about worrying needlessly, I would be a Bonjwa.

Lies. Never received 50 bucks from you ever. Maybe because I am a rather dated bit of German engineering. =(

Lol my name is Jett, and the title cuts off the 'a' in Jetta, so I thought you were saying bye to me, even though I don't know you.
On topic, my first car was a hand me down of three degrees (dad -> sister -> brother ->me) so I was super happy when that piece of shit honda i inherited finally broke down completely.

Also, being an American fan boy of the muscle cars, why isn't everyone driving a Mustang over there?! My favorite car and i have been waiting years for a right hand drive model which is finally coming to England in the summer 2015. But the price is extortionate lol, but i will still trade my Audi A3 and save a shit ton for it because they are sooooo nice. Makes me cry a bit when i see how cheap they are in America /rant
Hahaha, most of the damage was done before I got to it, I think the hit and runs were the only ones that happened on my watch, why didn't you ship yourself over a left hand drive one and drive it the way the good lord intended?
But yes, RIP Jetta, you served me well.

We pull used cars out of the South West/California when we can. Our winters just beat the fuck out of the vehicles.
