That said, it's a time of change in my life. I have just moved 938 miles (roughly) from the Pensacola, FL area to the town of Rolling Meadows, IL. On Monday, I start a new job with my same organization in a new role (and at a higher rate of pay, woo!) with little overlap between my new position and any of the past roles I've had with my employer. This new position will expose me to a different level of the transportation sector, and add new responsibilities. Also, the apartment complex I live in now used to be home to an old friend (and former fiance, as well as best man at my wedding) about three blocks from where she lives now.
(Sidenote: The fact that I am now 3 miles from a good, reputable source for Pocari Sweat may or may not have been a factor in my decision to move into this particular complex. Mmm. Sweet, sweet Pocari Sweat.)
I'm not that far from O'Hare, and of course I am in the 'burbs of Chicago. As compared to Pensacola, I expect there is a lot more to do here. If anyone has suggestions I'm open.
My internet options pretty much suck, although apparently there's an apartment solution partnered with the complex that I might look into depending on how much DSL sucks. Sadly, I feel I won't be streaming to my whopping single digits of fans.
I'm liking the weather so far, much more comfortable than Florida, even with just a tiny window AC unit that I almost feel like I don't even need. No strange allergies have popped up (unless you count my aversion to driving the Kennedy Expwy after my one exposure to rush hour and the large bill for fixing my car after that) and all the rest of my stuff should be showing up around the 18th.
Shoutout to the guys in the Computer Build, Upgrade, & Buying Thread - not only did they help me build a computer that took the move with grace and aplomb, the info there also gave me good tips on how to move my computer in my car without having the Noctua heat sink break the motherboard over bad roads.
Leaving Pensacola is kindof like leaving behind the worst time period of my life - although the last few years haven't been too bad, it also means leaving behind the area where my marriage went to hell and ended. It means leaving behind a place (NW Florida) that I was only ever in because of my ex-wife, and all the potential places that could remind me of good and bad things that happened there. My life got off of pause, from a place where I knew few if any people, had no friends, and really didn't have anything else to do. Now, I'm living in a place where there is (objectively) more to do, with at least one good friend nearby. Life is looking up.
Of course, come winter, I may be posting a very DIFFERENT tone of blog bitching about snow, ice, and central heating.
