It makes me so angry just talking about it.
Also, I think The Dark Project is clearly better than The Metal Age, the second game was quite unfinished and the level design wasn't as good.

It took 3-4 years to finish a title, but all the departments working on a project had interaction on their game constantly, making everything work togheter well. This means, that the guys who made the storyline talked with the guy making the maps, to the guy making the sound, the guy making the textures, etc. This would result in a game that was capable of proving consistent: If the game was good, it was good in everything. Now the downside was that 3-4 years is a long term investment in a project that might not work too well. It is very hard to sell to an investor nowdays a project that takes so long to profit. On the other side of the coin we have all the AAA titles that are created nowdays: 5 studios making separate components of the game that wont be togheter untill the final parts. This ¨could¨work if you have a n administrator that can coordinate everything perfectly, but the odds of that happening are almost no existant. Lucky for gamers, studios that make crappy games leave a huge room for studios that make great games (The witcher would be an example). This means that over time, AAA titles that are developed in this matter will become less and less profitable for companies that make them this way. It has already show in games like crysis 3 (in fact, crysis 1 was more profitable for EA even thou it was hacked by over 9 million people than crysis 3 due to the poor sales and huge costs it took to advertise the game). nice analysis. Eidos Montreal, a contributor to Thief exists primarily due to extremely generous tax breaks. the studio is not some hotbed of untapped talent. government handouts do not guarantee quality. not surprisingly.. layoffs at Eidos-Montreal have already begun. my favourite "government handout" story involves EA in Florida. they got some giant "Arts Grant" for EA to make NBA Live '13. EA got the cash and eventually cancelled the basketball game. i wish i could get some government money to produce nothing.

It has to be managed correctly by people who give a damn about it past their next paycheck. Also government money is 100% equivalent to shoebox money, investment money, and all other kinds of money for the purposes of doing things like buying and selling assets and paying salaries to employees - so I doubly miss your point.
