We're sticking with the Wayne's World motif for a bit, so buckle in.
We never really got the timing right, despite my having asked her out several times between freshman and junior year until our senior year. That was about three years ago this September.
Two years since graduating into a recession, we have been in a similar position to many of our peers. Though we have been better off than a fair few of our classmates, the term underemployed definitely still comes to mind.
I've had plenty of joe-jobs; nothing I'd call a career. Let me put it this way: I have an extensive collection of nametags and hairnets.
Well something like the Wayne's World quote but, substitute cubicle for hairnets and we are a bit closer to my situation. In the last three years, we've managed to put a bit of money away (not as much as I would like), moved in together, and even gotten some incremental raises though we are still hourly employees in industries where salary is definitely preferable.
Skipping to more recently and things have been stressful, especially for her. Her grandfather, who was in poor health to begin with was recently hospitalized, shes been made to pitch in a bit more for some shared familial bills all the while putting up with my man-boyish gaming and propensity for general ridiculousness.
Saturday morning at my place. Every Saturday.
I've been trying to play the role of the concerned male to the best of my abilities: Handling dinner and clean up most evenings, spending much less time sat at my computer and more time being useful in other domestic capacities (Most notably not leaving my wet towels on the bathroom floor XD).
Last Thursday I get a text from my girlfriend saying, "We should do a date night..." which is well and good. We'd not done one for a while, the money was there for a nice-ish dinner out. We popped out to a local bar called the Blue Door Pub which does some fantastic Juicy Lucys.
If you didn't know a Juicy Lucy is a burger, with the cheese melted on the inside of the patty. This picture is from another local spot called Matt's Bar which is one of two restaurants in the Twin Cities that claims to have invented the burger
As we were waiting for our food to show up, she tells me she had a gift for me being past our anniversary I was understandably suspicious.
Rather than a severed head, which would have been an odd gift to give in public, she passed me two folded bits of paper which were for the Dylan Moran show in Minneapolis that same night. For those unfamiliar Dylan Moran is a fantastic Irish comedian who starred in Shawn of the Dead as David, Run Fatboy Run, and my personal favorite his own series called Black Books. There are three of his stand up specials on Youtube, I would highly recommend checking out. She had done it out of the blue for my having been so supportive;this in and of its own right is impressive because the pair of us are awful with keeping secrets from one another.
Clearly, I reacted with all the composure of a teenage girl.
I had heard about the show months earlier but due to some unforeseen bills had decided that it was best to shelf the idea and clearly I was quite surprised/elated at the gift. Unlike most girl blogs I've read here, I just thought I would share a bit of awesomeness from my weekend and from my girlfriend. Hope everyone had as good of a weekend as I did.
