it's over. I just can't believe it. After four years, my high school soccer career has ended. Words cannot express what I am feeling right now. I'm sad that it's over, but so so so happy that I was able to experience all of it.
It all started in the summer of my Freshman year, after playng soccer all of my life, I tryed out for the team. I made the JV team, as expected. Our school was never really good at soccer, but our JV team was terrible. I stuck through it, gaining as much skill as possible.
My sophomore year was a rollercoaster though, after tryouts I was placed on JV again, not Varsity. I was heartbroken, I nearly cried. A week later, before our first game, the captains were named. I wasn't one of them. Now I was truly upset. I sat by silently though, playing my hardest, earning the the team 2 ties and 1 loss in 3 games as a goalie, with a total of 2 goals let in.I was then moved up to Varsity andd it struck me, I wasn't captain because my coaches wanted me to be moved up sooner, but they wanted me to get a few games in before moving to the big leagues. I ended the season as the backup goalie that played half the season.
My junior year I finally earned my starting spot. I won it over the senior goalie. I started in a majority of the games, including an invitational tournament. When districts came, coach played the senior though even though I was playing better. (I assume it's because this was his last year.) It was all fine, I still excelled at defense, but we lost in the finals.
Now it's my senior year, our team was severely weakened from graduating 11 seniors. We played a tough season, going 6-8-1. Tonight was our districts game, we pulled a top 10 team (We are in the 90's). Well, as expected, we lost 7-0.
I played my heart out this season. Now I am sitting here typing this blog, I'm not sure why. Just... I am. Tears are filling my eyes thinking that I will never step on that field again. I wish we had just 1 more game... If only...

I felt the same way after the last performance with my high school band. It was the first time in my life I've really contributed anything substantial to the interests of my peers and the community as a whole. I played solos starting with pep and concert bands in junior high, and then the final two years of high school. I even won a Outstanding Soloist trophy for my marching band with the help of my duet partner (we alternated parts of the same solo).
I still hold it as one of the best moments -- if not the best moment -- in my life. It sucks when you have a group of people that come together and work hard to get good at something, and then time passes and the culture dictates that it must end. It's heartbreaking. I sat on my front porch and cried hard for about 20 minutes.
One of the biggest things for me was remembering how I helped this kid get interested in playing better. I held a leadership position for my section in the marching band for two years, and he was a freshman my senior year. At first, he was really horrible and you could tell he never practiced. But after a few weeks, he could see how much some of us cared about the band and he really stepped up and had a great tone at the end. Somehow I feel that I was a part of that change in him. I'll bet you had an experience like that, too, even if it wasn't from a "captain" position.
Good luck in moving past it. It's hard.

Sweet christ you had 11 seniors in your team at one time?
At least you'll look back at this experience fondly and amicably. Better that you're finished wishing you got to play more than being relieved you no longer have to IMO.

I feel this. I remember bawling after my last band concert. There's something magical about group activities in high school.

I've never really been much good at football (soccer) but I went to watch a 10 year old play a couple of weeks ago. Made me realise how much wasted opportunity there was and how much I enjoyed playing back in the day.
My only advice is to do what I did, I started up football on Tuesday nights at work, 8 or more of us play on a small astro turf pitch, it's fun, a good workout and a chance to compete on something that isn't Starcraft!

Oh there are amateur leagues here! I actually plan on trying out for the team depending on what college I go to (If I go to a Division 1 school, no way am I making the team, but if I go to a Division 2 school or Division 3 school then I could.)
And I'll for sure check out that thread!

Nice! Yes defiantly follow your heart if its in football! Ashley Cole one of the worlds best ever left backs did not get scouted until he was 18! He was then playing for Arsenal in the best team in Arsenal history 2 years later!
