Back in 2010, a silver league protoss version of myself wrote this blog
Between that blog and today, I switched races a million times, tried the dumbest "builds', had serious ladder anxiety, barely played any games, or not at all for months. But I was never able to completely quit, I always felt something missing when I tried other games, and before long I would feel the desire to play starcraft again. I love watching high level play and ive come to love playing myself as well.
Today I got this:
+ Show Spoiler +
Yes, I know its easier in HotS. Yes, I'm still very bad at this game. But this marks the first time I actually managed to reach a goal i set myself in sc2 (getting promoted before the end of this season). It makes me think theres still hope. I think the main difference between now and 2010 is that I no longer fear losing and no longer blame anyone but myself for my losses.
I still have a long way to go on my way to become a decent player, but I'll walk it gladly.

I feel like my APM and mental multitasking is way too slow to ever approach masters. Its strange, I used to be platinum 8 seasons in a row for zerg. I barely played at all, just the placement matches. Now in HotS, I'm a silver league terran...and its SO HARD. Its crazy how much more work it is when I have to worry about building placement. Just wondering, were you also really slow when you started? Did you get faster? Or would you say an average APM can get you to masters?
Edit: Oh yeah, congratulations. You must feel proud!

Congratulations! In my opinion, that league promotion screen (especially to Masters) is one of the coolest things I will ever see. Good job!

Grats! Hopefully I get there soon :D

i admire your atittude. if it took me 2 years to get to masters i would feel ashamed xD

APM comes with practice, its not something you magically are born with.
Starcraft is hard

This is the mantra of someone who will eventually stagnate in this game.
Congrats on masters, keep pushing that envelope.

play broodwar if you wanna boost your apm, if you don't already, learn the game, play a solid 10-20 games. Come back to sc2, and you'll be like "wtf am i suppose be doing? i'm not clicking enough".

Yes, I believe I was very slow when starting out, sc2 was my first RTS. And tbh, I'm still rather slow, I average around 100 EAPM (effective apm), which is quite low, at least for terran. But I dont think you need to worry about APM for now, just focus on solid fundamentals, like constant production and not getting supply blocked. That really is the most important thing by far if you want to improve. A lot of games I won just because I was able to outproduce my opponents, and thus have a bigger army.
In the end, unless youre like super talented at RTS, you will have to put in the hours if you want to get better. I played about 200 games this season, more than ive ever played within a single season. No matter what level you are, if you sit down and seriously focus on improving your play, you will definitely see results, sooner or later.

Yeah, maybe i should be a bit ashamed, considering ive been playing this game for almost 3 years. But as i hinted in the OP i didnt play for long periods of time, or just like three games a week, and only just started really playing the game, instead of just watching streams etc

hmm that's interesting. So I guess it is possible to raise your APM a little. Its just because I look at the things demuslim does when he plays, and I'm not sure if my body/brain are physically capable of doing things that quickly, even if I practice. Like I'm not sure if there are fundamental biological limitations or whether this can be changed if you just try hard enough, which is why I was interested in people's personal experiences to see whats possible.
I guess I also have average APM, so in theory I should be able to get there, and maybe increase my speed a little. I'm also very interested in SC2 just because it might help me think faster when I'm doing other things while still having some fun.
Anyway that's good to hear, going to play a few games now
