Special thanks to jcroisdale for originally starting this thread
Pen and Paper roleplaying games like DnD are an incredibly fun activity. They are creative, artistic, cheap and most importantly easy to get into and intuitive. The only limits is your imagination. So don't be scared, try it out.
Since the old system appears to lead to a lot of lists which noone uses, we will change things around a bit. You are of course still free to use the old lists to your hearts content.
The way this is going to be working from now on is that people who are willing to DM post in this thread or PM me with information about the game they plan on running. This is open to anything from a Oneshot to long campaigns. You might even start with a Oneshot and then expand it afterwards.

The campaign will be focused around clearing out and overcoming a cavern system beneath an abandoned castle infested with Goblins and nasty monsters. However, in between dungeon diving there will be some amount of political intrigue and other activities.
After pressing his ducal claim on the nearby county of Torydale, Paul has added substantially to his realm. He plans to set up a seat of power in the abandoned keep, that he might have another vassal. He and his men cleared it out of the goblins and creatures living in it. As the construction teams moved in, they were attacked from below by raiders. Further inspection revealed that the cellars of the castle fade into a honeycombed system of dark caverns.
With most of his men occupied, and those at the castle already busy with dealing with the raiders and defending the workmen, he's had to find another way to clear out this dungeon. The Duke decided to hire sellswords, ask the priesthood for crusaders, call in old favors, and find mages via his court Wizard. In other words, he's decided to hire you to do the job.
Over the course of the last week, you've trickled into Castle City Pory, and Duke Paul has arranged for your stay at The Keystone, a modest but comfortable Inn in the castle district. As the last of you arrive, the Duke has summoned you to his court at noon-day to discuss the terms of your employment. Hopefully he will provide you with whatever resources are necessary. It's the 70th day of Summer, but even now the brisk Albian air reminds you of the cold winters this place experiences.
A moment of background: Chroisburg is a Duchy that currently includes the County of Chroisburg and the County of Torydale. Paul of Chroisburg is both the Duke of Chroisburg and the Count of Chroisburg-- he gained the former title by pressing an ancestral claim on Torydale. His brother Reginald is the de jure Count of Torydale, but without vassals and a castle of his own, he stays at Paul's court. At a modest personal expense, Paul has arranged for reclamation of the ancient Dwarf-Keep in the Torydale hills. By establishing a seat of power for his brother, he creates a valuable vassalage and will likely profit from it. His fealty to Albia, and King Ghrep, are unwavering, as is his loyalty to Emperor Zaiv and The Empire.

1. What game system are you running (D&D, Call of Cthulu, Palladium, GURPS, etc.), and if applicable what edition (Original, Classic, Revised, 1st, 2nd, 3rd, 5th, 10th, etc.)? D20 SRD - Only using D20SRD.org

My definition of "Core" means everything that can be found in one of the following four sources (D&D 3.5 sources): the Player's Handbook (PHB), the Dungeon Master's Guide (DMG), the Monster Manual (MM), and the 3.5 System Reference Document (SRD). In addition to that, you can pick alternate races and classes from Unearthed Arcana on the SRD, but run it by me first. Off hand I'd say no Generic Classes, Gestalt, or LA buyoff.
If you have the System Reference Document (SRD) only, you're missing out a few things. The Dungeon Master's Guide has one prestige class that's not in the SRD: the Red Wizard (page 193). The Monster Manual has the following races that are not in the SRD: Githyanki (page 127), Githzerai (page 129), Kuo-Toa (page 163). These races and the prestige class are all allowed, even though they're not in the SRD.
Not everything in the Expanded Psionics Handbook can be used. The Hidden Talent feat (page 67) isn't in the SRD, and so cannot be taken. Similarly, the psionic Githyanki (page 10), psionic Githzerai (page 11), and Thri-Kreen (page 14) races aren't in the SRD, and thus cannot be used. Note that the non-psionic versions of the Githyanki and the Githzerai are in the Monster Manual, and so can be used; the restriction only applies to the psionic versions listed in the Expanded Psionics Handbook. Also note that besides minor name changes to several of the prestige classes, one prestige class (the Illithid Slayer) has become the Slayer, and now has one less prerequisite, in addition to being a much more flexible class.
The following core spells and powers are banned:
Gate: The Gate spell is banned in all its forms.
Psychic Reformation: This power is banned.
Reincarnate: This spell is banned.
True Mindswitch: This power is banned.
2. What 'type' or variant of game will it be (i.e. "Shadow Chasers" or "Agents of Psi" for d20 Modern)? What is the setting for the game (eg. historic period, published or homebrewed campaign setting, alternate reality, modern world, etc.)? Standard 3.5e Core only.
3. How many Players are you looking for? Will you be taking alternates, and if so, how many? 5 players. Will take alternates, but hopefully won't be needed.
4. What's the gaming medium (forum, chat, e-mail etc.)? Forum, mostly, and teamspeak for certain components. Most of the roleplaying in this game, as well as moving through the world, solving puzzles, interacting with NPCs and other PCs etc will be handled in a thread (not sure where this will go-- maybe blogs of sports/games, but don't want to clutter anything up, so we might move it over the QuickTopic). When combat or something takes place, we'll try to set a time to get things done in Teamspeak, since combat minutae take a lot of back-and-forth, which gets bogged down in a forum context.
5. What is the characters' starting status (i.e. experience level)? 3200 exp, 3rd level.
6. How much gold or other starting funds will the characters begin with? 3000 gp
7. Are there any particular character classes, professions, orders, etc. that you want... or do not want? What are your rules on 'prestige' and/or homebrewed classes? Core only
8. What races, subraces, species, etc. are allowed for your game? Will you allow homebrewed races or species? 'Prestige' races or species? Core only
9. By what method should Players generate their attributes/ability scores and Hit Points? 32 Point Buy.
10. Does your game use alignment? What are your restrictions, if so? There are no alignments in my game. Detect Evil and the like detect hostile intent. Protection from Evil gives a flat +1 Deflection mod to AC and a flat +1 Resistance bonus to saves instead of +2 vs evil. Gods still have personalities, so don't go trying to execute innocent women and children as a cleric of Heironeous. In terms of your own character, just make sure you get along with the party and have a motivation to stick with them-- you guys should be friends, or at least allies.
11. Do you allow multi-classing, or have any particular rules in regards to it? I use fractional BAB and fractional Saves. Example: A Monk 1/Rogue 1 would have: 1 BAB, 2 Fort, 3 Reflex, 2 Will.
12. Will you be doing all of the die rolling during the course of the game? Will die rolls be altered, or left to the honor system? If players can make die rolls, which ones do they make, how should they make the rolls, and how should they report them? forum dice rolls only. Players roll things for their own character, and I'll handle NPC rolls and Initiative at the start of combat to save time, as well as certain spot, sense motive, and search checks.
13. Are there any homebrewed or optional/variant rules that your Players should know about? If so, list and explain them, or provide relevant links to learn about these new rules. Full HP on the first dice, use average on all following hit dice. For example, a 3rd-level Wizard would have 4+ 2.5 + 2.5 hp from his hit dice, plus whatever he'd get from constitution. I use Rich's Diplomacy.
14. Is a character background required? If so, how big? Are you looking for anything in particular (i.e. the backgrounds all ending up with the characters in the same city)? Your backstory can be what you want it to be, but should focus on your character's motivations, morals, and character more than generating plot-hooks. Of course, as a group you'll want to bring your characters together in your backstory.
15. Does your game involve a lot of hack & slash, puzzle solving, roleplaying, or a combination of the above? More of the first two, a bit of the last.
16. Are your Players restricted to particular rulebooks and supplements, or will you be allowing access to non-standard material? What sources can Players use for their characters? core d20 rules.

Player Requirements
Character Generation
House and Thread Rules
- Players must be 18+. No offense meant to younger players-- I was one once-- but there will be no minors in this game for reasons of maturity.
- Players must be comfortable using 3.5e. Ideally you've played a campaign before in this system, or at least a few adventures. A newer player will be accommodated but should try to set aside time to get familiar.
- Power Gaming: Please make an effective and fun character. If you're here to powergame, though, try another campaign.
- Most encounters and problems have numerous ways to solve them.
- Posting requirement: please set aside time to post at least once a day. If you don't have time for that much posting, but still want to play, please contact me via PM and we can try to work it out, but I'd like the game to move at a reasonable pace.
- Signups: Post a character idea and backstory or description if you're interested. Just saying you're interested alone doesn't really count ;_;. I'll put an example backstory for you at the bottom to get an idea for what you're going for.
+ Show Spoiler [example backstory] +I was not always nameless. Once, what seems an eternity ago, I was a prince, with a mighty and noble name. The second son of Shrack, I was never destined to rule, nor was I fit for it. Smart, they said, but daft with people. I was okay with that. It was a happy life-- let Wralec rule. I am happy with book and horse.
It all went downhill when that woman came. Our mother died in the great war 10 years ago, and so when the Sorceress came to wed my father he gladly agreed. And in time, she enmeshed herself in the bonds of power, slowly drawing the reins of the kingdom away from Father. In his declining health, he could barely tell what was happening.
When at last we could bear no more, Wralec and I confronted Jessica in the Royal Bedroom. She lay an fell curse on Wralec and he attacked me, but I managed to subdue him without killing him. I turned on her, but her magic was too strong even for me. When I came to, I was in a prison cell. The story was, I'd been found in the throne room and Wralec was dead by my hand. Fratricide.
Jessica wanted to kill me, but even in his age and senility Father was fair and just. I was stripped of my title, my wealth, and my name, and exiled for life. I am only Kinslayer now. My heart is empty as I wander these lands, far away from home. Whatever foul befalls me here is nothing compared to what has come before.

Reincarnate: This spell is banned.
True Mindswitch: This power is banned. - No Flaws/Traits

- Feel free to compose the party however you'd like. I'll make the encounters appropriate.
House and Thread Rules
- Bold Color for character speech, Italics for internal thoughts. Don't mix these up. Ex: "Of course, sir" says Johnny, bowing. Wow I hate this knight and having to pretend to be nice to him.
- Try to be active and interactive with your posts. Even if what you're doing is waiting for someone else to do something, you can move the party forwards. Ideally, you can keep things moving at a brisk pace while still doing what you'd want to do. As an example: Richard peers suspiciously at the swinging blades passing through the walls up ahead. "Ghordryn, any chance you can jam that mechanism?" If Ghordryn can't disable it, he draws his adamantine longsword and swings at the blades as they pass. If the trap is disabled, he'll continue at the front of the group down the corridor.
- I use the honor system for dice rolls in combat and the like: don't delete posts where you rolled poorly, and don't open spoilers that are marked for other characters or for the DM.
- I'll make certain assumptions and follow patterns the party sets. If you have a default marching order or order of night watches, or if you say you always search all doors for traps, I'll assume you take these actions without asking them. The goal is to not get slowed down by mindless details, but still get the full experience of the decision-making and the like. This may mean I'll be rolling some things for your characters (like search checks for traps or spot checks when you move into a new room where there is a hidden enemy) to save some time.
- Instead of PMs, whenever possible, ask questions in thread to prevent redundancy. If you want to privately do character stuff (like stealing something off a goblin corpse before the party arrives), put it in spoilers and label it appropriately.
- If you are unable to post for over a day, please let us know. We all have things that happen in our lives, and it's better to accommodate these things ahead of time than for the other players and me not to know what's going on. I'll be following this rule as well. If you want to take a leave of absence from the campaign, that's fine as well. If you need to be gone for a decent amount of time but want your character to be active for that week, we can get someone else or myself to control your character during that time. If you disappear for over a week with no explanation, I'll put your character on a forced leave of absence, effectively dropping you from the campaign.
- I use Rich's Diplomacy.
- I use fractional BAB and fractional Saves. Example: A Monk 1/Rogue 1 would have: 1 BAB, 2 Fort, 3 Reflex, 2 Will.
- There are no alignments in my game. Paladins have Smite Enemy instead of Smite Evil.
- Wizards do not need to make spellcraft checks to copy new spells from spellbooks or scrolls into their own spellbooks.

Now, in my opinion the scope of this thread should be expanded upon a bit. PnP roleplaying is an incredibly fun hobby, but it often appears to be intimidating or weird to newcomers. So i'd like to also use this thread for any questions or discussions regarding PnP, which should help keeping it active when noone is currently looking for players. If you are not currently playing, you should be.
I also encourage any prospective players to post a bit in here, so that people who think about dming know that there is interest in additional groups. Or maybe start your own group, dming is not rocket science. And players, please give new dms a chance, too. Generally, everyone please be nice to each other.
Next will be a list of useful links, both for beginners and more experienced players. If you know anything that should be added here, please contact me/post in this thread.

Ok, I'll post some funny updates from the campaign that we formed from this topic, because we're having such an awesome time.
So we were fighting the last goblin ghast of a pack of undead in an underground tunnel. The ghast was actually on the ground prone, since it couldn't for the unlife of it roll properly vs my Grease spell. So what it did was bite ankles of our warrior and battlecleric, paralyzing them in turn and doing a bit of damage, while both of them and our gunslinger spend like 10 rounds in a row MISSING every hit possible on the prone target on the floor. It went to such absurdity that I couldn't even breathe for all the laughing. The first hit landed on the thing was my wizard stepping on top of the paralyzed front line to land a fierce dagger blow, which connected! for...1d4-1 = 1-1 = 0 damage :D That goblin ghast lasted longer in battle than any other fight we've had so far, be them bosses or no. The Skype call was just uncontrollable laughter.
Bit before that, we were exploring an attic of a mansion perched on top of a cliff overlooking the sea, when our cleric gets a weird vision, fails his will saving throw, believes he is on fire and the only way to dowse the flames is...jump off the window to the sea ^_^ fortunately I managed to rush to the window to cast levitate on him before he plummeted down to a 20d6 damage fall which surely would have killed him.
The end boss of that place died within 2 turns, even though it had 90 hp. Kinda anticlimactic after the slaying of the goblin ghast that took over 10 rounds, but our battlecleric happened to roll and confirm a crit on his power attack 2handed sword swing and lopped the head off the boss for like 49 damage >_> Just as he finishes that my wizard finishes her first spell in the battle, to summon a small horde of things to pester the boss. Actually everytime in that dungeon I tried to summon something to aid in battle, our warriors finished whatever we were fighting just before my spell finished, sad day.
I heartily recommend everyone giving playing a try, this has been totally awesome experience and I've met fun people I hang out on skype every day now.

There is also my own campaign, with which i am incredibly happy. We are playing a more narration/investigation based style of game in an unusual fantasy setting, which often features a lot less combat then other games. One of my players is doing wonderful writeups of each of our gaming sessions, so if someone is interested, you can read them here. If you don't like the writing style of the first one, ignore it, that one is by me. Please give one of the later episodes a try too.

Time available (EDT): Thu/Sat/Sun, 4pm - 1am
Experience: New
Additional Information: I've never DM'd before, or really played anything like a full campaign, but I'm more or less familiar with all the mechanics. I'm looking for some (preferably new) players to try out D&D Next, playing on roll20. Being new to this, I'm ready to adapt the style of game to what the players are looking for
Player or DM: Both, usually DM.
TL-ID: Kneeb4r
Skype Name: Random.Canadian, but there's more then one with the name. I'm the hedgehog with a sombrero.
Time available: Pst/Est/whatever, Monday to friday, maybe weekends. I work from home, can make time whenever if there's people.
Experience: Many years of DnD 2e/3e/3.5e, I think 14 or so, and recently pathfinder as a player. Some Dark Heresy but don't know it well.
Additional Information: Prefer more narrative based games, don't care for rule lawyers as I'm fairly "rule of cool" but power players are fine with me.
I roll with strange things "You want to jump up unto the bar table and flying leap over your friend and strike your foe with a large salmon? Roll a d20" and don't take the game extremely seriously. If you want a grim and gritty story/world make it known beforehand so you can avoid Discworld type things.
Also familiar with roll20. Haven't done a full proper campaign on it but I've fiddled with it and have run one off adventures and boardgames.

Experience: Played a few Star Wars sessions many, many, many years ago. Know nothing more but the basics, so no specific rules or anything. Treat me like a beginner, who knows what dice are.
Additional Information: I'm 29 years old, from Europe and looking for fun experiences with new people. I am no rule nazi and do not have any preference as far as the universe goes. From classic Rollplay-style D&D to Shadowrun or whatever else, I'm fine with it all, as long as we can have fun. I speak German and English and I'm open to any toolset available to us (like roll20 etc). Whatever works best.

Time available (EDT): Pretty much anytime, would prefer CET afternoon any day though (like 06:00 MST (-07:00) (14:00 CET) and after that. Can't play on Saturday evening from like 12:00 MST (-07:00) to like 14:00 MST (-07:00). Can't play on Tuesday and Wednesday morning - from like 00:00 MST (-07:00) - 06:00 MST (-07:00).
Experience: Never played it, but I played some computer games that use D&D, and I like details so I'd probably study the hell out of the rules and everything before we play.
Additional Information: Would be great to use roll20.net for playing, doesn't have to be anything fancy, I just like the rolling there and the ability to draw freely and ping. I think it'd be even better if we don't follow the rules exactly to the letter, but play more like on RollPlay (heavily modified 2E), especially since other people probably won't know the rules.

Experience:DM of a simple campaign with friends just to familiarise ourselves with the rules. We played pretty loose with them though.
Additional Information: I'm 21, from the UK, I've played a bit of 3.5e, only 3 sessions though so I wouldn't say I gwas experienced. I've enjoyed it immensely but I'm finding it hard to get a regular group going. I also would like to be a PC rather than a GM, it can be pretty stressful when you have no idea what you're doing.

TL-ID BoonSolo
Skype Name: PM me
Time available (GMT): I’m looking to give this a go but between living with my girlfriend, working every day during the week and studying for financial exams I don't always have loads of time.
I live in the UK (GMT) and I could play 1 night during the week for a few hours so like 8pm-12 or something, doesn't really matter which day I guess and I could switch it up, but anymore than 1 night during the week is pushing it. Also depending on what’s going on at the weekend I could probably play then as well but can’t guarantee that I could play every weekend.
Experience: I’ve always been interested in D&D since being obsessed with Neverwinter Nights for 5 years a long time ago. So I think I know 3rd edition rules for building characters and how spells/AC/crits etc work however I think things have changed in 4e. Also as to actual roleplaying like that wouldnt be in NWN ive watched all of rollplay and think I could give it a good go.
Additional Information: Thinking of making a lawful evil character probably spellcaster, Cleric or Wizard. Race would probably be Drow or Elf depending on campaign setting
