Would someone mind explaining that picture in the OP, though? I assume the big, black-armored fella is Horus. Is the golden one that's still alive the Emperor? Who is that dead guy? What event is going on there? I've always really liked the art style associated with Warhammer as well.

Sanguinius joined the assault on Horus' vessel with the Emperor, but they were transported to different parts of the vessel. Sanguinius found Horus first, but barely managed to scratch the armor of his demon-powered brother-primarch. So there stands Horus, the greatest of the primarchs, the most trusted and most powerful of the Emperor's children, filled with the undivided blessing of the gods of Chaos, facing against his own father, the God-Emperor of Humanity.

The dead person at his feet is Sanguinius, the primarch of the Blood Angels, also a son of the Emperor. The Emperor is confronting Horus personally to stop the assault on Terra - really, Terra is about to fall, and only a desperate, spear-head charge stands a chance of turning the tide of Chaos. It's also important to note that the reason that picture pops up so many times is really because it's the moment that any possibility of the galaxy existing peacefully or any dreams of humanity united for the betterment of man were ended. Really it's the moment that the future ended, and there became only war.
