For the record, there is a rule saying you have to get a license, dont blame it on Blizzard if you forgot to look for it. GSL wont be canceled becouse Gom didn't forgot to gain a hold of one. Only if they are in the situation as ours will they understand the rage I was feeling when I read this dumb news in college .There couldn't be a perfect timing than slamming the Cease & Desist before just the finals isn't it ...

Let's say they do solve this and we can have the finals, just a few days later. This is still the worst load of horseshit I've ever been forced to eat. I'm going to lash out at anyone who caused this. They need to understand that this stuff makes a lot of people angry. Big companies understand public relations. They don't understand quiet muttering ("this will probably be fixed..."). Once they realize that their reputation is affected by this decision, they won't do it. Anyone who knows something about marketing knows that this is a way of testing if the fans allow them to actually do this. They announce it and see if they can shut something like this down, and if people aren't too angry, they shut it down. So make sure to be as verbal, angry and out there as you can.
As soon as I saw this I wrote a letter to blizzard telling them how I'm not ok with this. I'm not telling everyone to do exactly what I did, but make sure to do something. If they shut this down it has to cost them something.

KeSPA vs GOM vs Blizzard was before SC2 came out...that was when all of this stuff changed, and licensing became a big deal. Blizzard doesn't want big events running their game without their consent. And who's saying that the limit is 500 for BW? Sonic is putting up $7000 total prizes. No matter how you look at it, that's big enough for Blizzard to want them to get a license for.

Blizzard flexed their muscles in this situation again. I Personally dont like the way the affair was handled by them and i dont feel like giving super props to Mike Morhaim for actually doing the right thing. You oughta expect, that a company like Blizzard actually does "the right thing" regarding its own free PR (SSL7).
Furthermore, people commenting here about shitstorms or circlejerking perhaps are not fully aware of perspective on the Blizzard vs Kespa conflict from a broodwar players perspective. So i would be cautious to emphasize the BW beeing overly critical, hyperbolic. Furthermore i suggest you people go back to your subreddits or other forums and leave people alone, that actually care about the game. Many people here seem to view the incident as a chance to get "revenge" on "BW elitists", which in it self is no basis to a fruitful dialogue.

Hacklebeast is right, it's a very sound marketing move by Blizzard, one that 95% of the population will miss because they're overexcited about the event actually taking place, which is why it's so brilliant.
Props to Blizzard, well played (though they have people who are paid for this, so it's not exactly surprising).

And who's saying that the limit is 500 for BW? Sonic is putting up $7000 total prizes. No matter how you look at it, that's big enough for Blizzard to want them to get a license for.
the kespa blizzard thing was before sc2 came out, yes but sc2 was already in development and blizzard wanted to save the future of sc2 in korea which didnt work out too well....

I didn't mind paying blizzard money when it seemed that their goal included helping the community.
I defended blizzard to a point with their IP rights fight against Kespa.
We are the people that support the company, this is not THAT different from a government system. We follow blizzard's rule, and pay blizzard for their services (in this case their product). Blizzard pays it's employers, but that is also investment back into their products. But if blizzard reduces the BW community to "slavery under arbitrary power" I will no longer support blizzard in anyways. This does not help the community.
I will not trash blizzard, since Mike Morhaime at least, seems to not hurt the community for no reason, and he is still influential enough to stop certain absurd tyranny. But that is not good enough, at least not for me. Trying to not hurt the community is not the same as trying to make the community thrive.
That is the craziest, most lacking in perspective thing I have ever read on this forum.

Blizz started getting anal about BW licenses because they wanted to establish a precedent and keep KeSPA from doing an SC2 league without Blizz getting any cut or credit.
