Still, I guess it's a worthwhile watch.

The + Show Spoiler + part where he has to convince some of the girls to revert thier texts was the lowest part of the series in my opinion. Kinda killed the thrill that was happening.

So recently, due to bordom/excess free time at work, I've been reading the Sword Art Online LN. I've finished Vol 1, reading Vol 2 right now.
SAO spoilers/rant: + Show Spoiler +So, I more or less agree with Uta that SAO is an interesting concept. The actual plot of Volume 1 was okay. The plot isn't good enough to make me want to write much about it, but overall I thought SAO volume 1 was an okay read. Now that I've finished Volume 1, and know that Volume 2 is essentially all side stories, I have no clue how SAO will progress in Vol3+ after it stops being SAO, but I guess I'll find out. However, the bad part of SAO, or at least the bad part of Vol 1 that I've read, is enough to make me want to do this rant.
From what I've read so far, by far the biggest problem of SAO is the relationship between Kirito and Asuna. Alone, Kirito is an okay character. Without factoring in Kirito, Asuna is... Female. Meh. I don't dislike her. Anyway, what I do fucking dislike is how fast their relationship developed. It was insane.
So, just based on what was written in Volume 1, this is how their relationship went. Kirito and Asuna know each other, occasionally talk in meetings about clearing the bosses (this is basically what Kirito says, as hes the narriator/PoV for the story). That's essentially it, at least from what is said in Volume 1. So one day, Kirito finds a tasty meal from a drop, and ends up getting Asuna to cook it for him. Then all the sudden after the meal, Kirito says something to the effect of WELL IM TOO GOOD TO PARTY WITH OTHER DUDES, and Asuna is like OH YEH PARTY WITH ME THEN ILL SHOW U IM GOOD so they party. Then they go off to a dungeon. The only thing actually significant that happens is they meet the level's boss, shit happens, and eventually Kirito manages to save Asuna by killing the boss. Afterwards, some more shit happens, and this one dude poisons Kirito, and tries to kill him, only this time Asuna comes and saves him (lets just ignore that this little development of the dude trying to kill Kirito could be seen coming miles away, for the purposes of this rant). What do you think happens after this?
SEX. LOTS OF SEX. TWO YEARS WORTH OF SEMEN MADE A GLOPPING NOISE AS IT FLOWED ENDLESSLY INTO ASUNA (this is an actual quote from the translation of the LN). I'LL BE WITH YOU FOREVER, KIRITO-KUN. I LOVE YOU ASUNA, LETS GET MARRIED.
What the fuck did I just read? This dude is trying to give Nasu a run for his money. This is halfway through the first fucking volume, and we already got this? There is barely anything between them!!! Here is a funny fact. I've read the first part of Volume 2. Vol2 is essentially Kirito's adventures roaming SAO and getting various non-Asuna girls to fall in love with him. There is more between Kirito and this Beast Tamer loli than there was between Kirito and Asuna before they started fucking.
Now, judging from the anime, they are putting in side stories before this part of the story. Like, episode 2 showed how Kirito and Asuna met. DEAR AUTHOR, THAT WOULD HAVE BEEN SOMETHING IMPORTANT TO WRITE IN THE FIRST FUCKING VOLUME BEFORE THEY ARE FUCKING LIKE RABBITS. As it stands, its horrible story progression to do it the way he did. I guess I'm glad the anime at least is trying to fix the problem, but the LN has no excuse. I don't see how SAO can be as popular as it is with a flaw this big. And I can't see it getting any better with future volumes, so lol once I get to them...

+ Show Spoiler [SAO Vol. 1] +Haha that line is ridiculous. I actually have two versions of SAO: a download version in text, and scans of the individual pages of the published LN (well, three if you count the English translation), and neither of them have a sex scene there. I hadn't compared them before, but there actually seems to be a lot of changes between the two. In the scene right before they have sex:
DL version: 俺は慌てて従った。アスナの言うままウインドウを開き、恐ろしく深い階層にあるオプションを解除する。 ドタバタした導入には雰囲気も何もあったものではなかったが、二人だと少々狭すぎるベッドの上で、俺たちは時間をかけてシステムの許すかぎり出来る事をした。 詳細な説明は省く。
Published version: 俺は慌てて平伏しつつ謝りに謝り続け、どうにか宥めるまでにたっぷり数分を要した。
Then there's a paragraph break and they wake up later and talk about Asuna's dream. The DL version makes it explicit that they had sex, but "the detailed account is omitted." The published version kinda makes it sound like they didn't. Kirito just apologizes for a few minutes after asking whether Asuna had ever tried having sex before. I must have downloaded two censored versions because I can't imagine the English translators added that on their own...
I did enjoy reading volume 1 (haven't tried the others), but it definitely suffered from being so short. The world and the story in general had potential if it hadn't felt rushed. Hopefully the anime does a better job and ends up being really good.

+ Show Spoiler + + Show Spoiler +oh really... i guess i read the censored version as well, although sex was clearly indicated but not that cheaply spelled out, this reads almost like a fanfic of a horny teenager... oh yeah and when SAO ceases to be SAO it gets HAREMO ~~
I really hope the anime ends with volume 01 and some sidestories included, that way the anime for itself can be a decent standalone, because the rest is just "HNNNNNNNRG cannot let it end yet, need more fame and money, here have more girls"
+ Show Spoiler +The anime will probably be milked 'til the last drop. Maybe they should rename it Harem Art Online after vol 1?
for now, it will have 24-26 episodes, so they kinda have to have a plan where to end it, and when it sells well, it might be continued, but then i can easily pretend the sequels do not exist.

I grwe attached to the characters so when something serious happened, it was serious.

I might be missing something here, but who gives a damn about whether SAO had a scene like a slashfic or not? Won't be the first time a light novel does it, only question would be how graphic it ends up being. From the way things are, if there are any graphic details, it would've been from the old webnovel version and long since edited out of the published version (and the anime). Point of Asuna is to be a dutchwife anyway, so who cares?
We can go into the whole girls sell marketing strategy and whatever again but honestly I don't think it makes for the problem with SAO, lol.
Maybe I am just desensitized to the whole thing after the hot steamy trap sex and regular sex that happens about every vol in AHEAD, hue.

Doesnt really bother me either. If its going to get thrown in, its thrown in, I find it hard to worry about it at all for "omg awesome char got ruined " reasons.
Although to be fair if I ran into that bit while reading Id be pretty miffed how unneccesary reading that was.

It's one thing if it was just some hentai with no plot to begin with, but vol1 gives the impression that the author is trying to set up some romantic relationship that has been developed over the 2 years of SAO. However, in the end, it becomes more like "hey we've been friends for awhile that the author didn't write anything about and we fought that boss and I almost died, so let's have sex and get married!" So the problem is they're supposed to already have very strong [sexual] feelings for each other and this development is just completely skipped over. I don't have as much of a problem with it as Sent but his complaint is the build up, or lack thereof, as opposed to the existence of the scene. Everyone just ended up responding to the sex instead of his actual point lol.

Though honestly, they are in high school age, living on the edge in being on the frontier most of the time and neither of them had really done much but grind for the last around 1~1.5years, considering the situation, it wouldn't so much be romance as just the rebound of such a lifestyle. I think the short stories tried to work that out some more in focusing on how populations of player approach the situation that they are in (or the social experiment aspect of SAO), but that's that.
Either way, weak writing coupled w/ a dutchwife princess peach, shouldn't really be surprised at little romantic buildup into sex lol.

The issue isn't whether anyone is surprised. The issue is how it is bad.
I finished MLA yesterday afternoon. Still too shell shocked to write thoughts. Maybe I'll get to that next week.

That was actually in published version instead of being done as something online too. Like I might understand if Sent is arguing about how the prose is bad, but relatively random sex in itself is eh.
Not sure how MLA is shocking enough for you to chew on for a week, it was a straightforward work.

Slowly chewing through Vol 2 of Kyoukai Senjou no Horizon to keep me ahead of anime... OMG this thing must weight 3 pounds. And only part 1. The second season anime is much better executed than season one I'd say.

About halfway through Gantz manga. It's fun seeing another manga that's happy to be hyper-violent and gory, and isn't afraid to kill off characters at the drop of a hat. It's definitively not predictable, at least.
That said, fuck this MC. He's the most whiny bitch I've ever seen, out-doing most whiny romance protags. One second he's acting like a twat to everyone around him and all full of himself, the next he's crying because no one likes him and he got people killed. I seriously, honestly wish he had died instead of anyone fucking else so far.

Rather than better executed, what you are looking for is probably easier to adapt, vol 2 is rather combat-centric rather than talking heads. That and season 1 has already established the majority of the characters, so less awkwardness resulting from having a gigantic cast and not enough time. They are still going with trying to abridge the whole thing to fit it into a reasonable length though, so we might see more dumb stuff like how Elizabeth just announces her intentions in ep2, which might mean the England-Musashi meeting later on is going to get dumbed down to hell. I was really sad when I remembered that they cut out Taka and Fusae's little married couple talk about Tres Espana's strategy though. So many things taken out QQ
On another note, Ep2's Gin is hilariously cute.

I thought the letter scene was hilarious. Her timing was just perfect.

Gin <3, though Kimi is still my fav
Wish we'd see a Owari no Chronicle anime, though that might be even more confusing then Horizon.
