I thought his explanations were very silly and like a young kid just spouting a kind of quasi-philosophical rebelious thing "To me this word means this, and I'll say it because I mean it how I mean it and words shouldn't hurt you" But I think the turned corner in this case is that he's shattered his own argument. He's not throwing out a term like 'Well rape obviously in this context doesn't mean sexual assault' or 'Im just saying nigger because it's like a word and I'm like yo, not saying he is one, just saying it' But in this, that's what he's doing, he's taking the direct racial slur for that person and throwing it directly at that person. I think people get overly sensitive sometimes about use of words out of context....but this is the exact context you're not supposed to use it in. This is the one where its not only offensive, but that it was 100% meant to use the slur to refer to the race of the person you're saying it to. There's just no wiggle room on this one. Exactly. Context arguments don't apply in this case, since the remark is not being taken out of context. It was used in exactly the context which Destiny intended. Fan boys and girls, feel free to stand behind your hero, but don't try and defend this using his arguments, or like him, you will fall flat on your face, since his argument spoke directly to meaning being determined by context. Obvious Asian player being called a gook is not a contextual misunderstanding, but a racially charged verbal assault.

I understand what you are saying, but just because OP can spew out this type of crap as well doesn't make what Destiny said any better. This has been an ongoing issue with Destiny since he began streaming, and has came up countless times. Destiny has said previously that he believes it's fine to use these words, especially OK if they aren't meant in a racist way, but he has said terms in racist ways several times. I mean look, the community got Orb fired from his new job for saying nigger in a game. That's a normal day in Destiny's stream. I remember a while back I was watching Destiny's stream while he was play Deus Ex? and found a black guy and shot him in the head, saying something to the likes of, "shot that nigger dead." Destiny is just a loose cannon, and I don't think he deserves to belong to any team or sponsors at this point no matter how much attention he draws in.

Right. You should always contact the team or player first, not the sponsor. That ends up hurting the industry as a whole, unfortunately, if you go to the sponsor.

Were the silly kids who are saying "Who cares?" about Destiny saying the same thing when discussions of Orb were going around? When is it okay for racial slurs to be slung around and when isn't it, because obviously there are times when it's perfectly fine apparently and times when it's not. Why can't we clear up where that fine line exists so we can all find our special places to use racial slurs and be perfectly acceptable? Wouldn't that be fun? Good Lord, the people in here... Personally I defended Orb, or rather I felt the punishment he got was way to extreme. I think people give racism slurs way to much value, rather than brush them off(because these slurs say the most about the people using them). What annoys me about this whole thing though(which was most apparent the first few pages) is/was the double standards where Destiny was just "being Destiny", which kind of indicated to me, you need to cross certain racism slur threshold, so your slur usage is acceptable. I personally think people should look down upon racism and racial slur like this, or in the least treat people that say stuff like this the same(that is the stance of the sc2 community, seeing as EG and QxG isn't the same organization, you can expect different approach/stance from them).

Did he stop at that? As in, Player, Team, Stop? Because that seems like it would be rather ineffective if the threat of actual action was never present. If it's Player, then Team, then Sponsor if neither the player or the team cooperate then that's fine and make sense. But people shouldn't be afraid to ever contact sponsors because it will, "hurt the industry". If that's the mindset then there is really no threat of action and little reason for teams or players to respond to complaints.

As the biggest SC2 community on the internet (by far), Team Liquid (and his staff mostly) is actually able to shape (or at least, they have a say) the culture (patterns of behavior and customary norms) of the SC2 "readership". Bans and sanctions gave important contextual information for all the users of this forum on the "dos" and "don't do" of the community. Then, you can count of the self-reinforcing nature of forums (people posting the same thing over and over like this thread) to nourish the dominant norms of values of the community. I'm not saying that those values are wrong, but it seems to me we are nurturing a conflict-less environment, showcasing mostly "positive" values even if most people is just apathetic. It just a corporate wet dream: the 18-25 class age without all the crap that usually comes with it (profanity, deviant behavior, etc... ). It looks like the pre-betting scandal era from Broodwar, when Broodwar was heralded as the manifestation of the "innocence of youth" (forgot the slogan, but it was something like that). It is truly ironic as the SC2 scene is probably the whitest scene (well, if you count asian as white, lets say "black-less" and "latino-less" ) of all gaming genres. WardenSC has the right to feel offended and, on the same situation, i would have been offended too. But 130 pages on racial slur makes me feel this thread says little about racism and a lot about how much we try to showcase ourselves as the white knights we certainly are not. I note your observation. Teamliquid has gone all-in on promoting SC2. You'll notice official articles are not written by staff members, but by Team Liquid ESPORTS. They have tournaments, sponsors, a pro-team, the works. So, I do agree this arena is beginning to have corporate PC influences, for the sake of the future of TL's flow (money and otherwise). However, suppose teamliquid had no agenda, no meaning, no flow, and hell, didn't even exist. When is it really acceptable to call people niggers and faggots? When you're an emotional sore loser playing a fucking computer game? Because that seems to be the mentality of a lot of people here.

all this political correctness is too much. athletes trash talk on the field all the time. pro athletes, even. it's one thing to regulate what ppl say in a tourney, or on tv, or in any public sphere, but you are gonna pick apart what someone says on battle.net after a rough game? im not a destiny fan or anything, but this is like banning someone from a basketball forum for talking smack at his local court. sure its not pretty, but lets be level man, ANY competitive scene has trash talk. why we have to scapegoat and single out destiny due to some whiny hypocritical tattletale kid and his hurt feelings is beyond me. Destiny you have my full support and that of the true sc2 community. I honestly don't get you guys.In another article some tl mod was criticizing 'no face koreans' for winning competitions now tl bans the most entertaining guy out there. Please be more considerate.

Secondly, I'm amazed that Destiny continues to do this shit. I really hope he's thought his plans through. He makes a living off streaming and his stream has been declining. With his choice of language he's risking losing his team. And if he tries to find a job and the first item that google search brings up for Steven Bonnell is "baneling rape analogy" it's going to be difficult for him to find something lucrative in the real world. On top of that he's trying to raise a child (which costs a shit ton of money). I hope these firestorms bring him lots of viewers, because it'd be really shitty to lose his team (and probably the chance to ever be on another one) over something as trivial as words.
