Words have power. Calling someone a cracker doesnt have that same negative conotation because our society values white people more then any other race, so calling someone white isnt an insult*. When you use a word that discribes a race as an insult, you are stating that your race is better, even if its through subtext. Race is an INCREDABLY sensitive issue. If I was a TL admin I would perma ban destiny, but if I was a TL admin destiny would never have been featured either. The dude is a professional troll who isnt even that good at starcraft. *this is not my personal belief, but american society is racist like crazy. | ||

As the biggest SC2 community on the internet (by far), Team Liquid (and his staff mostly) is actually able to shape (or at least, they have a say) the culture (patterns of behavior and customary norms) of the SC2 "readership". Bans and sanctions gave important contextual information for all the users of this forum on the "dos" and "don't do" of the community. Then, you can count of the self-reinforcing nature of forums (people posting the same thing over and over like this thread) to nourish the dominant norms of values of the community. I'm not saying that those values are wrong, but it seems to me we are nurturing a conflict-less environment, showcasing mostly "positive" values even if most people is just apathetic. It just a corporate wet dream: the 18-25 class age without all the crap that usually comes with it (profanity, deviant behavior, etc... ). It looks like the pre-betting scandal era from Broodwar, when Broodwar was heralded as the manifestation of the "innocence of youth" (forgot the slogan, but it was something like that). It is truly ironic as the SC2 scene is probably the whitest scene (well, if you count asian as white, lets say "black-less" and "latino-less" ) of all gaming genres. WardenSC has the right to feel offended and, on the same situation, i would have been offended too. But 130 pages on racial slur makes me feel this thread says little about racism and a lot about how much we try to showcase ourselves as the white knights we certainly are not. | ||
