The meal plan at my school comes with $150 "Dooley Dollars", which can be spent at any food place on campus. I can go to Cox, which is kind of like a food court, Jazzmen's, which is kind of a coffee place in the library or any other eating place on campus. On the whole, it's a pretty convenient deal (though I don't see why I couldn't just have $150 taken off my meal plan and spend it how I want.
Anyways, a good portion of these funds goes to coffee. It's become kind a ritual for me to visit Starbucks after my Friday calc class-- a kind of celebration for the end of the week. The shop is also pretty close to where I have calc, which is a bit out of the way for me otherwise. I usually get a venti caramel frap because, well, it's my favorite. It's very sweet, but it's got a slightly bitter aftertaste. It's both more bitter and sweet than the mocha or any other flavor. It runs to be just under $5, which is doubly overpriced (Starbucks PLUS private university = ouch). Getting the biggest size has the lowest cost per ounce, which makes me feel like I'm scoring even a few points against the man.
Surprisingly though, I hadn't spent many of my Dooley dollars. I got a few burritos with friends (they're pretty good, love that chicken calimex mmm mmm mmm!), a few late night things at the pseudo-Greek place on campus and some coffee, but I had quite left. So, one day I decided to get a Starbucks scone. It had been a harder week than usual, I wanted to unload some serious Dooley dollars, and I planned to sit on one of the benches in front of my dorm and do some hardcore chilling.
(this is the view from in front of my dorm. Center of campus, but its pretty.)
I didn't really know how good the scones were, but among the fancy things, they seemed like a nice homely option. The line was particularly long, so I had time to choose between blueberry, cinnamon apple and orange-cranberry. Eventually, I went with the last. As I make some small talk with the cashier ("how are you", "good, how about you", "done with the classes for the week, gonna celebrate with some coffee!" "good for you!") and order my venti caramel and scone, I hear someone behind me say "ooh, those scones are great!"
(and so they are.)
I turn around. Behind me is a pretty Asian girl-- not quite sure if she's Chinese or Korean. THere's precious few of them at my school, and my working IQ usually has a negative correlation with how close I am to a cute girl, especially Asian ones. Somehow, that doesn't really happen here.
I tell her its actually my first time getting a scone from Starbucks. She tells me she gets them all the time. Especially the cranberry orange. It's definitely good. I tell her I hope so--- I haven't had any real baked goods in a long time, and I'm kind of excited for it and the hardcore chilling I'm about to do. We chit chat a bit about the weather and how the campus is beginning to be pretty. Somehow, I mention that I baked and cooked at home, and we just chatted for awhile while we waited there for our coffee. Oddly enough, she got the same thing as me-- a venti caramel frap.
Well, I got my coffee and smiled and said goodbye. She smiled and said bye as well. I suppose my working IQ did drop during that. I was halfway up the hill back to my dorm before I realized what I'd done. There was this cute Asian girl who'd I gotten along really well with, and it'd been completely out of the blue! A complete chance encounter. I didn't know her name, her phone number, how old she was-- nothing! It was just small talk, but it had felt strangely intimate and comfortable-- the kind of chat you only have with someone you've known a long time.
The scone was really good though. A bit sweet, a bit sour. Bittersweet.
When she said she liked scones, I should've just said, "okay, could I actually get two scones please?" I had the Dooley dollars to spare. Heck, for $5? Totally worth it.
I haven't seen her since. My school is supposed to be "small", both student body wise and campus size, yet I haven't even caught a glimpse of her. I go back every Friday and get a cranberry orange scone, hoping she will perhaps show up. I wonder who she was. Her name. What she studies. What dorm she lives in. Maybe I'll see her again. Maybe I won't.
Just a chance encounter. Connecting at the level of scones.
So um yeah. Post your favorite Starbucks drinks and treats. Or talk about meeting random people. And stuff.
Oh, and here's a linky link. It reminds me a bit of what happened actually, though it was nowhere near as dramatic and awesome. WFP4LYFE

5/5 despite hidden girl blog ninja magic
Mostly for Dooley, as it reminds me of a completely unrelated inside joke.

I don't understand this "Starbucks and University" mix. My school doesn't have a Starbucks, am I not getting the best possible education?
|
relevant:
I've had that kind of thing happen before. I think the fact that you dont realize that its a girl who you might like/might like you back that plays into your ability to chat with her, and also your idiocy in not pursuing her. It makes for a good story though. Good luck with the future ladies.

i almost always get a venti white chocolate mocha frappuchino without whipped cream, but the "fruit" and creme frappuchinos are really good too. it also feels like the employees at starbucks are 1000% more friendly than anywhere else, i don't know if anyone else has gotten this feeling.

I hope you run into her again ^^

Duh. A proper education require copious amounts of very overpriced coffee.

Haha, I've seen that before.
Too true. ._.
Instant connection too often leads to instant failure. No time to plan!

Haha nice blog sir, I've only had Starbucks like four or five times but its been good. I think i got something similar to what you got.

I think reacting by buying two scones would have been too hasty, but you definitely should have asked what she was up to and if she wanted to sit down with you to drink your coffees while you were both waiting. Something like, "are you in a hurry?" "no, why?" "let's grab a table"
which 50/50 transitions into "uh I have a boyfriend" or "ok!"

hey no worries. My speech capacity is directly proportional to the distance between me and a pretty lady, and inversely proportional to the attractiveness of said lady.
completely normal... right?

Baked myself some scones and damn those things are lethal. I ate two and I'm stuffed. Highly doubt any girls dare to eat that stuff anymore these days.

Pleasantly surprised to see it's a girl blog I love scones! I hope you get the chance to share one with her ^^

Yesss hidden girl blog uncovered!
Pretty smooth IMO, not easy to naturally get acquainted with complete strangers. I'm going to be an optimist and say that you'll see her again. In that scenario, the fact that you didn't ask for her number is even better, because now you're started with a good impression without looking like a casually flirty guy. Well nothing wrong with being flirty, but you have the option of going flirty or going shy/innocent now. It's like you went for 3hatch before pool, and you're ready to play an awesome macro game.
When you meet her again, you can buy her a (cranberry orange) scone =D
GLHF
*edit: also caramel macchiato is the best 'common' Starbucks drink imo. You can have it hot in the winter, iced in the summer, either way... awesome caramel-ness.

Which is why a pretty girl eating a scone makes it EVEN better. And remember, the best curve of a girl is her smile. Well, I read that somewhere at least. Sounds good right?

Eh, maybe it was for the best. I don't know if I could have held such a long conversation. Maybe another time, eh?

Sup Op. Lol, you're a girl blog hunter? O_O
Still play any Maple, or is the guild officially in a coma?
So... can I nydus your main nao?
I just prefer to get fraps... the huge fancy shmancy icied and whipped cream makes it look bigger and more of a deal. Though it really is just half frozen water.

I have a sad starbucks story
On my way to work there is a starbucks, it is conveniently placed, and it is staffed by people who by now know what I order every day. For some reason, I like it when I walk in and they have already prepared my large americano
On to the sad part, I start work at 7:00am, and they just changed their hours to opening at 8:00am every day! I guess none of my co-workers go to starbucks, so it wasn't worth it for them
Now those workers have gone to the new swank location, and the close starbucks sucks, and is never open...

Dude I've been hunting girl blogs ever since the dawn of time I discovered the blogs section. Errr, regarding MS, the guild has been officially dead (as far as I know) for past 2-3 months. If you want some of my stuff be specific (leave me a PM or chat me on TS) and I'll see if I have it.

Sounds like a good experience. My personal theory is that the more you run into these sorts of social situations where you can make a spontaneous connection, you get more and more comfortable and may later be able to work in the possibility of seeing her more. You know, this time it was just talking for a short while about food but maybe next time you get her name and find out what she does around campus, maybe even sit down together at the starbucks, etc etc
try to be at the starbucks at the same time next week!

SB helped me get to know a girl better. Hm. I'd known her before but hadn't really talked to her much. She only started talking to me 'cause after she saw me at a SB working, she thought I was interesting enough to talk to; apparently she thinks that people who study at cafes are usually interesting, while those who don't can be interesting, but it's hard to tell sometimes. I told her she collected interesting people. She said it wasn't quite as calculated as I'm making it out to be, because it isn't that she collects interesting people, just that she discards(?) boring people.
She's a great storyteller and is judgmental (but she recognizes this) and perceptive about people's characters; I called her a psychoanalyst jokingly, because some of the things she says ... she can pin people down pretty accurately over a short period of time. She also says things sometimes that make me think about how I relate to people, and I've become a lot more aware of both myself and others and those connections, if that makes sense.
She's one of those people who can just make friends pretty easily on the spot without being a social butterfly; I don't know if it's charisma, but if it is, it's a subtle form of it. Still pondering about it.
EDIT: Which is not to say I'm interesting, lol. Just caught that. She told me once about this other girl who was so boring she was interesting in her boringness. Maybe I'm one of those, because I don't think I'm particularly interesting myself. ^^;
