While this thread is labeled "DotA2", this is in fact a community thread first. Many of the users in the TL LoL subforum have been playing as friends for over a year now, so it makes logical sense that they would want to play other games together.
Do not compare DotA2 to LoL, you will get banned.
TL LoL veterans know what is expected. Newcomers be warned.

I just got myself a key and I'm nervous to jump in. I played DotA way back in the day, I think the Invoker was the newest hero at the time. I wasn't very good lol but I feel like I've gotten to be decent at LoL and thus feel like I might be at least slightly more prepared to be less of a noob in DotA 2.
This might be silly but I'd like to pick up the heroes I used to play but I don't know if any of them are noob friendly. I've read its better for new players to avoid hard carries and such.
I used to play Undying, SpiritBreaker, Sacred Warrior, Drow Ranger, Storm Spirit, Witch Doctor, and Geomancer.
Would any of these heroes be any good to learn the game with? If not what would yall recommend?

In the competitive scene the average dota2 game actually doesn't last that long at the moment, since it's viable and effective to run heroes with strong early game and pushing potential. Plenty of games you have teams pushing in and killing the enemy base 20 minutes in.
Back in the dota1 there were various metagmes where relatively long games used to be the norm and people did complain about this. Over time the game balance has shifted so that strategies that end the game early are just as viable if not better than those that go for a really lategame approach.
The fact that these long games are kind of a novelty now make them more appealing. It also has to do with the build up to the end game, like in that replay there's basically already been 50 kills as well as barracks taken before any kind of lull in action. If you compare it to LoL a lot of games basically nothing has happened outside of laning before a standoff at baron occurs. Apart from that there's an extra dynamic in that nearly always one team will out-scale the other, which puts the burden on the worse scaling team to do make a play before they lose and also makes it more interesting for the spectator.

Undying and Geomancer aren't in the game yet. Additionally, I don't think they're great to learn the game with because their roles are somewhat awkward.
Drow and WD are pretty stand-out examples of a hard carry and hard support respectively. They're fairly straightforward for learning those roles in particular, but insofar as playing the game in general, you should be prepared to lose a lot of pub games if you're playing them, as your control over the game-flow will be limited.
Storm Spirit is a great hero to play in pubs, but he's very technically demanding, and requires a lot of game sense related specifically to the hero himself. I'd say he's a good hero to move up to once you've got a good grasp of the game overall, but not great to start.
SB and Huskar are good gankers that have strong semi-carry potential lategame. In terms of getting good experience at playing all phases of the game, this is probably the best way to learn the game. Huskar is probably slightly better than SB, as Huskar is a more stable solo laner, while SB's laning on his own is somewhat poor and needs some amount of protection early game.

Alright, finally installing this thing since my invite a couple weeks ago. Putting off my book, resume, and giant game backlog, but I want to see what this is all about.
God help me.

Just watched a pro DotA2 game from a day ago or so, gonna link it here. http://www.joindota.com/en/vods/853-jd-masters-mousesports-vs-evil-geniuses-semi-finalI recommend EVERYONE WATCH THIS GAME. Even if you don't entirely understand what's going on. TobiWan is essentially the caster the LoL scene is sorely missing. Just a fantastic game from all angles. + Show Spoiler +The most interesting thing is the last 30-40 min of the game is turtling and posturing over Roshan/barracks which is almost exactly how almost all pro LoL games turn out, and yet we find that boring in LoL and apparently it's incredibly exciting in DotA2. Is it the lack of casters making it exciting? Is it just because they're different games...? I personally think it's a combination of both. it definitely has at least a decent amount to do with caster. TobiWan is such an amazing caster in that you can feel the passion and excitement in his voice.

Just played enchantress in jungle. got so farmed/fed I ended up 3-4 shotting the enemies with simply my ulti. ROFL

Playing Ursa made me wonder what a solo queue tier list would look like for dota/dota2. It's odd that in LoL everyone tries to find the best solo queue heroes yet in dota/hon barely anyone gives it much thought.
|
I think it's due to the sheer amount of heroes that can be pub stompers compared to LoL. Just comes down to player skill in the end, like Ursa for example, I wouldn't consider an insane pub stomper because he at least requires the person to have some skill in lane with no escape/melee/weak cc. Only heroes that bother me in pubs are the afk farm jungle heroes since it's easy to abuse when games tend to last longer and takes little skill to get farm. Faceroll your way to wins with naix and lycan all day =P
While in LoL you are also confined to static lane matchups for a good portion of the match, so for a consistent solo queue hero you just need a champion that has the ability to dominate lanes.

I think that's an interesting point, in which there's no real pub stomper in dota, like in LoL.
On seperate note, how do you guys do your control groups? and item hotkeys?
also is there smart cast in dota2?

also is there smart cast in dota2? I use 1-4 as control groups. Items I do YGV456. QWERDF for skills. I don't believe there is smartcast in DotA2, but I could be wrong. There's soooo much variation in what people use for hotkeys in DotA2. It partially has to do with how much you played WC3 DotA and if you use legacy keys v. grid keys. For item hotkey rebinds it's also entirely up to you. I like having 1-4 free for heroes/units because I loved playing Meepo so I'm just keeping enough keys open for him.

Also, I read your quick n fast jungle guide yango, How does one exactly creep pull? and creep stack? U stack camps by aggroing the camp at around X:53 then you move away from the camp as far as possible. The way DotA works is if the camp is empty at every minute mark, it respawns. If you do it right, the monsters will follow you so the camp is empty at X:00. Things to note, the more camps you stack, the harder it gets to pull as the creep will block each other's movement. Camps with ranged monsters (most notably the 4 Satyr camp for me) can be a little harder to pull; for those you generally want to start the pull a little earlier to ensure the monsters clear the camp.
Pulling is relatively simple, you basically want to aggro the camp and lure the monsters towards your creep line, which will then aggro onto the jungle monsters and follow them into the jungle. If you stacked the camp (or double pulled) then the jungle camp will kill all your creeps for you, thus pulling your lane back towards your tower. Generally, to creep pull you want to aggro the camp at X:15 or X:45 and pull it out towards your creep wave.
Double pulling is a little trickier. Basically what you do is you do a regular pull, then when that camp is almost dead, you cut a path through the trees at the back of the camp (with tangos or quelling blade) and pull the camp behind it into your creep through the path you just made through the trees. This is much harder to do. You're better off just stacking the camp and pulling a stacked camp instead.

Thanks for info. I'm gunna be sure to try out some of these techniques in my next game.

one of the few good guides on playdota.com is Luminous's quick jungle guide(I think it's Luminous, it might be Purge... either way it should be easy to find, look in 'misc guides' and sort by highest rated); it's a great source for beginning jungling.

Is the Liquidparty channel very active in grouping up for games? I've only played with acynic, spudboy, donghai, 2down, red(?), and one more?
P.S. If anyone has a spare key I can have I'd really appreciate it. I'm willing to queue with you and play support while you farm dota-style, for a key. :D
EDIT: Also SD game mode feels like all-random lite. Lack of swapping is a huge downer.

So something I've noticed is when I'm jungling in dota, it seems that the enemies seem to wander into enemy jungles a lot more often in Dota2 than in LoL. I usually end up dying to randomly walking into 2 enemy opponents, I understand that there are wards, but they're pretty fucking expensive to get at the very beginning of the game 200, for 2 6min wards, and this investment actually makes it hard for me to even do the jungle with some champions (like axe). Usually who gets the beginning wards in dota2?
Also, can anyone be kind enough to do a warding guide? w/ pics and stuff? especially w/ info regarding when to ward.
Also, I seem to be having a problem w/ my hero constantly getting agro'd by minions. like I would spam click to runaway from enemy, but my character would randomly stop and try and turn around, and this has gotten me killed soooooo many times, this happen to anyone else?
Does anyone know if crit chance/dmg on items stack or combine with crit chance and damage from skills? like lycanthrope, or skeleton king?

Thanks man! <3
EDIT: wow this guide is pretty overwhelming for a nub like me. been atleast i know some key warding spots :O
