I haven't played 1.6 in years. I bought it again on my new Steam account, and what the actual fuck.
The serverlist is completely fucked up. All of the servers have a fake player count, and redirect to other servers. Apparently it's been hacked by some Romanians in 2010 (?), and Valve still hasn't fixed the issue (not surprising, seeing as they want everyone to get CS:GO. meh.).
Everyone is pretty much forced to use GameTracker/Game-Monitor or HLSW, which I find is extremely annoying (mainly with GameTracker Lite).
I guess no one's really complaining now, since I came so late to the party, but damn. Even when I do find good servers, the majority of the players are from half-across the world from where the server is located; barely anyone even speaks English (not a huge deal, but I do want to communicate with people sometimes.. :S). If I was European, I probably wouldn't be having this problem, the 1.6 scene is still kicking there (although eventually going to die; it's only a matter of time).
Pretty disappointing tbh. If you TL'ers know any other fix, or suggest some good servers, I'd be happy. Guess I'm just gonna have to live with this, just like everyone else did. T_T

Pubbing is basically dead for 1.6, all the pub communities has long moved on to other games like CSS, L4D, BF3, MW2, and so on. If you want to play 1.6, you basically have to play on ESEA or another client.

as skyr said, esea is pretty much the only way. people dont even use #calscrim or #findscrim anymore :D

if you're in western canada, the unity pub is pretty fun -- 208.146.44.38:27015
edit; i guess i don't need to quote the op, heh

1.6 is the greatest FPS I've played. Shame it's dying. It's just amazing. All these MW2 kiddies don't know what they're missing, they're too busy 360 no-scoping. D:

Esea is pretty excellent, if you don't mind paying a monthly fee. It's got a 14,000k subscription base with mostly active players. 1.6 Is still one of steam's most played games. But yes, the server browser is incredibly difficult to use. There are still good servers out there, it's just hard to find them through all the bullshit ones.

I guess I'll consider subscribing to ESEA when I sharpen my skills up.

I live in the east coast, but I still fav'd. Thanks!
Also, do you guys want to make a TeamLiquid 1.6 Steam group? Would anyone be up for it? Maybe we can play inhouse scrims and whatnot.

is there an esea free option?
|
No there isn't but i think there's a trial?
|
I tried to play some 1.6 yesterday but every server has >150ping and I lag like a bitch...in Cali here. Have to play CSS it seems.

I have a couple favourites on Zero that are still running but 1.6 looks dead. My Zero ones are also empty or <10 half the time. Hey, this game had a ridiculous lifespan. Even lasting this long is an achievement.

Edit: I'm 99.9% certain there is no trial either.

Bit of a CS noob here... but CSS is still going strong from what ive seen, why not play that instead? (and if not, seriously why not? I'm curious as to what the differences are)

CSS is a different game than 1.6. The maps are different, the recoil is different (random lol), you can move while being shot (wtf?), and you can't shoot through walls.
I think CSS pubbing is still strong but it's been a while since I've played. It's an easier game where you just spray and get a random headshot the majority of the time and there are hardly any consequences for doing something stupid.

Deathmatch pubs were by far the most fun I've ever had.
