If I paypal'ed a player a certain sum of cash, can this be just a one-time thing(for me to claim "I'm a sponsor"), or does it need to be a regular thing like a bi-weekly paycheck? What is formally recognized and what is a "tip jar" thing? 1) Give them money 2) Nope It comes down to being significant enough an amount for the player to consider. Fact is, most pro-gamers salaries suck, if they even have one to begin with. Personal sponsorship can be a substantial supplement. Obviously we're not going to talk about the amount specifically, but what I will say is that the sponsorship increases his salary by 50% an enables him to concentrate fully on his progaming career. 1) OK. How. Let's say I wanted to sponsor Hero(JUST AN EXAMPLE). What are the steps/procedures. Or let's say I wanted to sponsor InControl. Or Naniwa. What now? We don't have direct contacts to these players, and simply PM'ing them on TL forums and hoping to get a response is not gonna cut it. And to take this a point further - what if the progamer looks at the sponsorship from some nobody, and thinks he's being trolled? It is not appropriate to tweet these people, saying you wish to be a sponsor, when you're not even a company nor a name brand. It's different for you obviously. I'm asking from the standpoint of someone who isn't a name. 2) Was hoping for something more elaborate. For example you're a known entity already, thus the thread name. What if some Average Joe handed X programer Y amount of money. Can this person then, make a thread "Joe Gamer Sponsors X Pro-gamer" and not be immediately shut down and/or shouted down as a stupid fame whore? This community is very thankful, but it can be vicious as well. I can already imagine the posts "what makes you so special just because you handed someone cash, when he didn't even ask for it, nor gives a shit about you". That's why the questions need to be asked. Again it's different for you as you're a prominent name and a famous caster. The difference between sponsoring and donating is that when you sponsor somebody you have some kind of contract with your sponsored player and the payments are regulary for a fixed time. Often he will also gives something back to his sponsor as for example promoting you or your products with a badge on his jersey, giving shoutouts to you in interviews or do certain special advertising stuff for you. But all in all the sponsored player is the one who profits way more from it than the sponsor. 1. If you really want to sponsor somebody I would say the best way would be to contact the team manager of the player and then set up a contract for it. If u don't expect more from the player than thanking you in interviews for your support and you offer a noticeable amount I guess most of them would accept it because as TB said most of them don't earn very much money. 2. I don't really think that the community would be very interessted when a "nobody" sponsors some player. You propably wouldn't get offended but i guess most of the people would think "awesome for the player but who cares"
Beautiful response.
Yes that's really all I'd be asking for. As you stated, it's a two-way street which benefits both parties. The sponsor gets name recognition, and the player gets cash, which is straightforward. When you see IdrA look right into the camera and says "I would like to thank all my sponsors, EG, steelseries..." maybe this is just me but for some reason I like the way IdrA does that. Wouldn't it be awesome if someone like that also plugged you, something "...and JoeGamer from the Team Liquid forms" That would ROCK.
That's one of the reasons why I think it would be great if there was a database of pro-gamers who - would welcome sponsorships from the community and plug their names after a big game, interviews, etc. It's just a little bit more memorization for the pro-gamer, more spending money into his pockets, and a nice perk for the community.

They'd have to have some sort of minimum donation, otherwise they'd be there forever. "I'd like to thank Joe Bloggs for donating $1."

And that's fine, and I would like see that figure established. However from what you're describing is a one-time donation, or a string of $1 transfers or something, which is obviously silly. TB says the amount has to be a portion of the player's salary or something. TB for obvious reasons will not disclose the amount, but we can deduce a few basic things.
So let's say 10K over the course of the year. That's $833/month - whoa. An individual is not going to be able to pony up 10K out of his own pocket unless he is single, has no family to support and is swimming in money from his day job.
I was thinking more along the lines of 5k or so. But double that is not feasible.

Are you sure this is the way you want to spend that money this way.? You could also host a tournament this way, even a smaller league (or donate the money humanitarian). If you want to use it to sponsor a player I am sure that's possible, the question is which caliber of player you can get with that. A player like Stephano or MVP makes a lot of money from tournament winnings, HuK has a huge salery, so I doubt that such a player would do that (I may be wrong however). What is the minimum skill level of player you would like to sponsor?

It's a bit of a dangerous(?) debate to go into where the money should go, because that's a bit of a controversial topic and there are just too many angles and variables where that can go. Some will say, why can't you just donate the money to a REAL cause, while others will say, STFU moron give the money to me ROFL TROLOLOL
So IMO let's leave that particular angle aside as it won't take us into good places.
Hosting a tournament is an idea, but there has been too much controversy over the format I proposed and as such, I chose not to pursue that any further. I wanted it to be a KOTH format with a "last boss" but people shouted me down and gave me the impression that they were entitled to all my money and I don't deserve to be making the money I do in the first place. I may entertain the idea but due to what's happened, there are seriously psychotic people in this world whenever certain sums of money go above a certain threshold, they will do whatever they can to take it from you, and it's your fault for opening yourself up in the first place.
I'm not sure if you went this way but just in case you were(I might be wrong), but let's imagine for a moment that you were suggesting that pros like Stephano are already successful and already making big coin, so why should I be sponsoring them, if they are already doing well? What about the little people who aren't well known? Why make the rich richer, when that same money could be helping someone else?
Regarding minimum skill ideally it's someone who conducts themselves professionally, has a good track record, consistent, mannered, just an all around good person personality-wise and professionally.

That's quite interesting. A double-personal sponsorship? BlinG has potential. I'd like to see it work out.
Good luck to both parties!

Been a big fan of all your other stuff sc2 aside, in fact I check your channel every day now to see the new content. I've heard you ramble on about how you can't support this, or that something is hypocritical and I've been like okay sure but you're still making bank off this video and me watching it. The quality regular content is what has me watching.
That being said this is pretty awesome. I'm really happy for both parties involved, I think this will help grow the TB brand and help bling follow his dreams. Yeah it's just one person but it's certainly making that one persons life a lot better than it otherwise would have been, struggling to make some money at a side job and trying to keep up the practice.
Personally I'm loosing faith in people in general, more and more people are just out for themselves but every now and then you read or hear about something where that's just not the case.
