Because I love this community, I like to take some time to get to know a few of the “regulars” on occasion. You all are like friends and neighbors to me, and so, why not get to know you better? Recently, I had a nice little chat with one of the most honest and sincere people out and about in our community – you might know her as Kitty. This fine lady caught my attention with all her tweets about how much she adores another one of our own, Day[9].
Without further adieu, I present: Kitty
BrightSide: Hi Kitty!! So - as to not hold you up from watching your beloved - I'm going to jump right in and blast you with questions!
Kitty: lol cool
BrightSide: First off, please tell everyone who will read this a bit about yourself. I know this is pretty broad, but however you'd normally intro yourself to someone you just met - who are you, what do you do, what do you love?
Kitty: Ok! Well, hi! I'm Caroline, commonly known on the internet as Kitty4Cat or Kitty4Catz in some places! (The main reason for the "with or without Z" is because there's at least one other person on the web that goes by the same nickname as me so I had to add a Z sometimes!) Besides that, I'm 28 years old, I live in the province of Quebec and my first language is French. I'm studying to be a secretary and I'll finish school in June 2012. You may think that I'm kind of old to be at school still, but it's a back-to-school situation for me since I had been working for 5 years before that.
BrightSide: Not at all - never too old for education. Never stop learning.
Kitty: Yeah, that's what I thought. I started by being an arts student, then I switched to the office thing! Not that I don't like arts anymore, I just didn't intend to teach it, so why not choose something I'm good at and that I like too?
BrightSide: Of course. I've done both of those thing as well, and now have a JOB doing both - so - I really believe that being versatile is great - you're using both sides of your brain, and that's pretty cool!
BrightSide: So - getting into your adoration for Day[9]... admiration? one of those words – hah
Kitty: lol, yes both.
BrightSide: You are the most enthusiastic supporter in the universe! What came first for you? StarCraft or Day[9]?
Kitty: Actually, I first had a contact in the StarCraft world before I knew who Day[9] was. My friends are all gamers and most of them love StarCraft a lot! I first started by looking at them playing, asking some questions from time to time like "What's that spinning diamond you just created?" Yes, those sorts of questions! lol
BrightSide: YES! “The spinning diamond!” Awesome!! (That sounds so much fancier than “pylon”)
So, how did you eventually learn of Day9 - or I guess, when?
Kitty: Yeah, Day[9] arrived in my life when I saw one of my friend watch a daily about one year ago. As far as I can remember, I know that my first thought was "Hmmm, cute!" but I still don't remember if my friend ever told me his name (or his nickname)!
BrightSide: Haha, nice. What aspect (or aspects) stuck out at you the most- what really reeled you in to where you became a major supporter?
Kitty: I really discovered who Day[9] was a couple months later. I was still trying to figure out how the game [was played] and my friends, probably exasperated to try to make me understand it, suggested to me to watch his dailies. They told me to search for his nickname on YouTube, and told me that I would find all that I need to understand. And that's what I did. The very first video I watched though, was not a StarCraft video, it was the video which was recorded after the Daily 241 where you can see Day[9] doing some lip sync on the “Cry Me a River” version from Justin Timberlake!
BrightSide: Oh my, haha - I will have to find that video. Too funny.
BrightSide: I'll have to see that, but I think I'd definitely look for more videos after witnessing something of the sort - if for nothing else, a good laugh. So, was it just the incredibly adorable lip syncing, lol, or was it the passion behind his analysis, the games or analysis themselves? What really got you hooked on Day[9] in particular – versus other personalities in the community?
Kitty: Well, after I saw that adorable lip sync - you have to watch it! lol- I searched for more funny things... and there's a lot of funny videos which feature Day[9]! His funny personality first got me into [watching] him! I started to search for information about him, and something was always there... everybody was talking about the daily 100 which seemed to me to be quite a thing. I was curious and I watched it... I probably fell at that very moment... That passion he had and the love he showed for that game and the SC community was stunning.
BrightSide: Very true - I've actually suggested to people to watch that episode. People who know nothing about SC, who have any doubts to the awesomeness of this community, get a link with a message demanding: "watch this..."
Inside the community, many of us know that Sean has been a big part of the 'scene', under a few different aliases, since the days of Brood War. Since becoming an avid Daily-viewer/supporter, what are the most important things you can say you have learned about SC2? How about the community in general?
Kitty: The most important thing I've learned about the community? That people are so nice and they want to help each other! At that moment in my story, I hadn't played a single game of StarCraft 2 ever, and the nearest I'd been to StarCraft 1 was its map editor about 10 years ago! lol I wanted to give it a try and, by chance, there was the starter edition that got me to learn how to move Terran units and how to build buildings. And some weeks later, I got the full edition and keep on playing Terran because I was used to it! lol About a week after I got the full edition, I played my first practice match (I hadn't played the game for the whole week following the purchase of SC2), my friend Izzak saw me play that practice match and since I was so bad (I still am!) he suggested me to do the Funday Monday "Worst Ally Ever" (381)! After I played that game, I continued to do those practice matches and then the December 5th 2011 arrived, and the Funday Monday happened! After that first appearance on Sean's show, I had many people approaching me to play with me, to help me get better! I thought that it was so sweet of them to try to help me like that! The main problem is that I don't get to play very often because of school and also because I have so many projects that I want to achieve, so I first thought to create a 36-hour day, but since it's not possible, I try to do as much as I can and that implies to sometimes choose between doing 2 things or more!
BrightSide: Goodness, you are so right about people here being amazing! I did see that worst ally ever episode! And was like, “Ohahahaha!! That's Kitty” (since I kind of knew about you before that)!.. I think I actually msg'd you after. Too funny.
BrightSide: Are there any other games or personalities you follow as closely at the moment, or just Day[9] and SC2?
Kitty: You did tweet at me after that daily! I remember! :D That game was funny! I had fun playing it and when I re-watched the daily on the Tuesday afternoon, because I can confess that I didn't understand a word of Day[9]'s analysis of my game! I was only hearing him saying "Kitty", that's it! lol Now, do I follow other games or personalities? No. Well, yes, on Twitter, I follow a lot of people related to SC2 but the only game I follow is SC2 and the only personality I follow on a daily basis is Day[9]. That man is amazing, really! I think I couldn't find enough words in a dictionary to express how amazing he is!
BrightSide: Aww - such conviction! WooT! Your passion might just outweigh his - lol.
That match was pretty darn funny - I remember you just putting some SCVs in your command center and letting them hang out in there. I had a great laugh - and I was quite sure it was all just fun for you (I remember doing similar things when I first picked up the game)
Kitty: I didn't intend to put them in the command center! lol I'm pretty sure I mis-clicked on some button and that got them in! I don't do that SCVs nap time anymore, thank god!
BrightSide: Haha! That was really funny though.
BrightSide: On a further note, the SC community is obviously forever growing, as are the public personalities. You being a big supporter, in what role would you like to see Day[9] (or any other favorites) in the next few years?
Kitty: Day[9] in few years? Probably still doing his dailies if he still wants to do them! The first step of my thought process begins with that -obvious- thing! But in few years? I don't know... The one thing I can say is that, as I saw written on Reddit, "his dailies are so much more than just Starcraft". I know that he likes StarCraft a lot but he inspires me deeply with his way of life, how he thinks, how he sees life in general, how he isn't ashamed of things he loves, how passionate he is on tons of things... I definitely loved the Musings he did earlier before Christmas... Kittens & NinjaStars and Positivity... Those were so inspiring! When he turns on life stories, one can totally relate to those! I don't know if he would be willing to do either lectures or write a book about that.... Not necessarily a book entitled "How to see life like Day[9] sees it" but something that would communicate to much more people his point of view on life...
BrightSide: deep - haha, That title, admittedly, would be pretty funny.
Kitty: hihi
BrightSide: Following along with that ...Hypothetically, if Day[9] just decided to change careers completely, do you think you would still remain as much of a supporter as you are right now?
Kitty: Totally! I first "met" him on a totally not StarCraft-related moment and I was delighted by his personality, so if he decided to change career right now and do a different kind of job, would I still be a supporter? The answer is yes without a doubt!
BrightSide: Sweet! That's really cool.
Hah - Now, the 'meanie' question: Have you ever been offended by anything he's ever said, or disagreed with any of his points?
Kitty: No... I... try to figure out what could have possibly be offending from his speech, but... no, I see nothing that he has said that had offended me. Neither on the disagree point... I know that there are people that can take a little bit too much seriously some "meanie" things he can say from time to time, but one has to keep in mind that it's a character that he's playing when he does that. Actually, I'm pretty sure that most of the rambling meanie things he can drop like little bombs when he tells stories or when he casts are way far from what he really means. I don't say that he plays a character all the time, nor that he can't have those sort of thought, but my intuition tells me that I'm probably not really far from what he thinks when he does that sort of things.
BrightSide: Oh, ha- I was actually suggesting I was a meanie for asking, but you make a good point :D
Kitty: ^^
BrightSide: You two have not met in real life, right?
Kitty: No, I didn't have that chance yet, though I chatted with him a few times, not too long, but long enough to feel how sweet he is. ^^
BrightSide: When you do finally meet him, how do you imagine that will go? Do you have a whole script prepared, or are you on the fly?
Kitty: Ahahah! I do imagine the moment when I'll get to meet him, but since I know that my fantasist imagination is all wrong with what will actually happen, I guess I'll say that I'll go on the fly! lol
BrightSide: Haha - probably the best - Usually there are no rose petals or billowy, white linen sheets around the tournament venues anyhow. =P
Kitty: * laughs * Yeah, I guess
BrightSide: Tehe.
BrightSide: Ahh, after all that interrogating, what are your plans to spread the awesomeness of the SC community beginning tonight? (ahh- or maybe in the morning since it's kind of late -)
Kitty: lol
Kitty: My plans? Hmm, I talk a lot of Day[9] at school and talking about him without talking about the community is almost impossible! So yes, I talk about StarCraft with my friends. Though the majority of them are not interested (hard to believe, but that happens!) I have some friends who are into games like UT... maybe I'll get them to try SC2 and love it!
BrightSide: Woo! We're all esports evangelists here. I love that people talk about SC outside of the community - interested or not, friends hear you, so that's a good thing!
BrightSide: okay - one last question -
BrightSide: Anything you'd like to say to Day[9] in the instance he's to read this interview?
Kitty: ...omg...wow... that's a hard question... probably the hardest you asked so far in this interview... What would I want to say to Day[9] if he's to read this? First, I would address to Sean, not to Day[9]. That may seem weird because he is both of them, but for me, it makes a difference.
Sean, if you read this, I first would like to thank you. Thank you for that little sunshine you bring through my computer screen every day. Thank you for the uncontrollable laughs you have, that laugh which only hearing it brings back smile on my face when I feel down. Thank you for your childish moments that you share with us. Thank you for your sincerity, for being true to who you are, for you sharing those little awesome moments with us when you ramble some stories about you, you make me feel like I'm one of your friends, the most delighted gift you gave to each of us, your viewers, every day. Thank you for being the kitten in my life! I wish I could get to tell you this aloud when I'll meet you, but I'll probably forget how talking works when that'll happen so receive here all my gratitude. <3
BrightSide: Oh that's delightful!! Well put, and heartfelt!!
Kitty:
BrightSide: Thanks sooooo much for doing this, Kitty – you've been a real treat !!
Kitty: Yeah sure! Thank you for choosing me to do this interview! That was fun! (My first interview! :D)
BrightSide: Pleasure – have a great night!
As a quick follow-up:
Kitty: And I forgot yesterday... when you asked for the personalities I follow in the SC community... megumixbear :D I forgot her! XD
Kitty: lol
BrightSide: ahh yeah <3 her - she's a real doll
That wraps it up for now. In case you have not witnessed Kitty's die-hard support, you will always find her on Day[9]'s stream – working the chat – at http://twitch.tv/day9tv , and you can follow her twitter at @Kitty4Cat.
And as always, ~Be Happy~
