But don't give it a smooth back. I have an irrational fear of smooth things.

No. I thought it was a joke the first time I read through it... then I started reading more posts made by the author of the thread. Blizzard is not going to change the design of a unit because 1% of the population doesn't like how it looks.

The holes weren't horrifying, it was the concept of holes appearing on unimaginable places (fingers, limbs, WTF?) that made it so freaky. That video was a terrible test if the phobia was solely on the reaction of a cluster of holes. I could look at the gameplay video of swarm hosts all day and nothing is happening to me.

And since Zerg doesn't have a lot of AOE, maybe these "spines" could do AEO damage of some sort. In all seriousness though, yeah its kind of disturbing when I think about it, but if I don't its ok. Seriously, this!

Still, really? How about arachnophobia and lurkers or anything alike. Challenge yourself and try to overcome your fear or challenge yourself by not making the unit and still winning. It's an easy choice really.

The effect of trypophobia (thanks urban dictionary!) is down to subconscious (or primordial as a previous poster put it) level, and it is present in all humans. Humans are naturally disgusted by flesh that is disfigured/damaged, to varying degrees, from slight unease to outright disgust/fear (which is why discomfort can be caused by lotus seeds in their natural form, ie unphotoshopped onto people - it looks like it should be smooth flesh, but the holes induce this unease), if you are not there is something wrong with you. The above poster is correct in recognising an instinctual reaction, but is wrong to think it is a psychological phobia. Personally, the pictures affect me not one whit (although they still made me feel itchy, what a coincidence, huh?), and I will tell you why. This entire thing was made up to troll people on 4chan many years ago. Their reactions then were the same as many people's in this thread, minus the 'itchy' part, which someone cleverly added on (you are getting itchy because you are getting told to feel itchy, not because of what you are watching). What is interesting is that no one said anything about this being a phobia then, it was just an interesting way to make people feel utterly freaked out until someone explained that the shit was photoshopped. The only cure for this 'phobia' is to grab a bag of cement, and harden the fuck up. It's pretty fucking stupid that you think that your experiences generalize onto the rest of the human race. I mean, this really is not a big deal to me. I will never see lamprey fingers in real life so I'm pretty safe on that front! On the other hand, I have basically same physiological reaction to looking at the lamprey fingers now as I first did however many years ago, long before anyone had ever coined the phrase 'trypophobia' (in fact I heard it for the first time in reading this thread); I literally feel my skin tingle. On October 30 2011 04:29 TangJuice wrote:Whoa dude you may feel this way legitimately but there are going to be some people that feel slightly itchy or uncomfortable simply because the thread primed them to be, although probably never to the same extent you mentioned, its kind of like how saying "don't think of a black cat" will make people think of a black cat, the mind is very easily manipulated in these subtle ways. And this is wrong, because I know that I have felt this sensation long before ever hearing of 'trypophobia'. On October 30 2011 04:43 Tyree wrote:And like i said before, if many of you experienced this on 4chan, then you know aswell as most people here that there are far far FAR worst things posted on that site than holes on bugs/people. I think the point is that it's not rational, and there's not really a hierarchy of 'worseness' in the manner that you suggest. I have seen many objectively horrible, gruesome, and disgusting things on the internet over the last 15 years or so, some of which I'm sure other people would find deeply unsettling. I can say without hesitation that I found the lamprey fingers more unsettling than any of them, even with full knowledge that it is a fake picture. I mean, many people in this thread (for example) have probably seen that gruesome set of pictures of a teenage girl driving a Porsche way too fast, getting in an accident, and literally having most of her head come off as a result. I think that those images are sad, and I think that they are gruesome, but I have no physiological reaction to them. Conversely I have shown the lamprey fingers to other people and they have claimed to have no reaction to them. I'm sure most people fall into this category. It's a stupid photoshop -- why should anyone react strongly to it at all, right? Look, overall I feel kind of weird responding in this level of detail, especially given how typically obnoxious people on the internet who self-diagnose themselves with conditions such as Aspergers or Fibromyalgia are. I have no idea whether this is even a well-defined psychological condition, and I'm certainly not looking to define or re-define myself (as e.g. self-diagnosed Aspergers sufferers often do) through having this 'condition'. It certainly doesn't affect my day-to-day life in any remotely meaningful way. And I don't particularly care whether Blizzard changes the Swarm Host or not. I just feel that all of the posts claiming that people who claim to experience similar symptoms to the one mentioned in the OP are either lying, easily influenced, or squeamish, are ignorant.
