As someone who used to live in Eastern Europe and now lives in the US I'd like to make a statement - there is no major difference between hating on gypsies or hating on lower class blacks/mexicans in the US. Rhetoric is absolutely the same, they 'rob/steal/kill/don't like to work so they should be sent back to Africa/Mexico'. This is racism in its pure form and every hypocrite that finds gypsy bashing justified is inherently the same inbred trash as the one that claims blacks are inferior people. Lets draw a line here for once - you are either a racist piece of shit or not.

The very word is sort of not accepted by the Romani that I have come across in my own country (good encounters overall). First of all i don't even know where exactly Katunica is. I live in southern Sofia, Borovo namely, which most ppl say is another world existing outside Sofia and even Bulgaria. It's an upper-middle class district as the US guys would say. We don't have gypsies here, we don't have riots and the whole thing's more like a news-story than real event. You know something you hear over the radio while you drive to work.
So here comes the story. Few months ago a gypsy family did move in nearby. Nobody reacted. It's money and being polite to others that counts here not origin. Soon enough the family became whole clan, they were like 20 ppl living in a small house. We didn't react on that either. Culture, you know, none of our business by far. Then they started making these huge fires, burning tires and all. That smells and it smells like hell. They were walking down the street calling each other names, gee i've never heard a mother calling her own 9yo kid "bastard" or "whore" before. We talked to them, asked them to stop burning tires at least. The answer was: "Make me!". In a month the situation got quite arduous, they were forming a real "geto" right there in that small house. We had to do something and do it fast, so the whole community signed a declaration demanding the municipality mayor to evict them. It worked, in few days the police came and so we got rid of them.
Now we didn't make a party or something, most of us, incl. me, felt kinda guilty for being the reason these ppl to lose their home. It came out they moved in illegally, but yet chasing ppl isn't something to be proud of. But also we were relieved.
I didn't hate these gypsies, i didn't care about them, they didn't steal anything or some such. However if they were at least a little bit tolerant towards our lifestyle there wouldn't be any problem.

Even the US denied them citizenship based on their ethnicity at one point
We did the same to several other ethnic groups. Its very misleading to use this as evidence of anything having to do with the natural tendencies of gypsies..
We only let a handful of Romanians into our country at one point.. for one example.

The origin and history of the people is extremely convoluted and prone to misinterpretation especially as the languages used by such people are very very strange. In short, Ill call them whatever they ask me to, or more expressly, Ill refrain from calling them by something they do not like.

The origin and history is convoluted and open to interpretation only to you since you know nothing about it. Moreover you have not met any gipsies and have no idea what the majority think of the term "Roma".
If you understood these people at all you would know that they are smart enough to exploit non-discrimination law and they call it discrimination whenever someone forces them to do anything they do not want.
Such as sending children to school, paying taxes, being evicted from areas where they have no property titles etc.

Wrong. They do exist even though the government (at least in Bulgaria) has tried to help gypsies integrate better. The government might not have done in perfectly, but it tried, it gave many of them free housing, financial help (even though small), and offers free education. Read the thread to see what happened to the free housing provided...
The reason why people blame the government is because multiple governments not only failed to stop a notorious gypsy mobster but they also supported him.
Granted there are corruption to certain degrees in every government but clearly more so in certain countries and the Balkan countries / the rest of eastern europe does not have a good track record when it comes to democracy.
Bulgarian governments have been corrupt as hell since the first one was created, but this has nothing to do with the criminal mindset so many gypsies seem to have.
So how about yopu start focusing on the real problem and support protests against the governments instead of riots against a minority of people that has no influence over the countries fate anyway. You shouldn't be half as mad at criminal Romani as you should be at the goverment that lets it happen.
If you had read the thread, you would know that the protests are aimed at the government and not at the gypsy community.

I live in Michigan now, but I have been hearing about this as I still get bulgarian TV over the internet. Can't say I am suprised something like this is happening, there has been issues ever since I can remember. I just hope something happens soon before more people are hurt.

Again, someone who has no idea about the issue and thinks its the same thing as minorities in the US. You are so naive and i don't care if you say you come from eastern europe you still don't know what you're talking about. The issue is completely different as eastern european governments are NOT the same as in the US and they actually rarely resolve these problems. Which is why the bulgarians rioted in the first place and is why this thread is here.
And its not just the Bulgarian government; the french PRESIDENT SARKOZY DEPORTED GIPSIES FROM FRANCE BACK TO ROMANIA AND BULGARIA. Does anyone actually understand what this means ? Its not just the european governments that can't deal with the situation but also the western governments.

Where Im from its sort of not accepted to bullshit people into donating money for deaf people or forcing your kids to stay out of school and sell drugs instead. I think we dont come to an agreement here, lets just face it, I have no idea how things go in the US and you dont know nothing about europe so lets just agree to disagree. You dont get what im saying and frankly I dont get where you are going besides you love everyone and its wrong to call them gypsies, even though you never met one of the sort we talk about in this thread. There is even a dude from the US one page back who said he travelled to berlin for 2 (!) days and had to deal with harassment.

See you're completely missinformed and have no idea about what has happened in Europe since you left. You see, Romania and Bulgaria are now EU member states which makes all of us EU citizens and gives us the right to legally move to any part of the EU we want without any immigration papers or even a god damn passport. Kind of like moving from Arizona to Texas; you can't really do that illegaly now can you ?
