my favourite expert in the areas of pressure, power, and fear in the midst of intense competition is Al Davis.
Here He Is

"This is a game of intimidation and fear. I think this, in the first 5 to 10 plays the other team's Quarterback must go down. And, he must go down hard. This sets the tempo for a game"

When you applied to be part of an Al Davis team he asked you this question during an interview with him: "if you could only have 1 thing would it be 'power' or 'money' or 'love' "
You had to answer POWER. In Al Davis' view if you had POWER you could get everything else.

When starting my working life as a software craftsman I had a great many job interviews. Whatever I was wearing... underneath it was either a 100% cotton Raiders t-shirt OR a New Jersey Devils t-shirt.

I always worked for people who were intense disciplinarians demanding 100% from every employee.

This, to me, seems to be more of an environmental (who are the people around you? what are the expectations?) and mindset kind of thing, rather than fear/anxiety/stress. If you got both (right mindset and people around you) can will thrive like beast, or you're extremely disciplined yourself - but than you end up with no life.
