So I'm not sure about the browsing habits of most of you guys, but I usually have a tab open for Youtube music videos and a fair share of music I listen to while working or playing comes from Youtube. All those tracks that are missing from my Winamp library, albums I never bothered to rip from CD etc ... I usually listen to online.
Over the last two years or so, however, this has become increasingly difficult. A huge part of all Youtube videos is dead for german viewers and either look like this:
"This video isn't available in your country."
Or this:
"Sadly, this video [...] isn't available in Germany, because GEMA didn't authorize the contract rights."
All of this comes on top of international record companies blocking unauthorized videos and shutting down channels.
So what is GEMA you ask, and why are they causing trouble? The GEMA basically is something like the american RIAA; they represent composers, musicians etc. and watch over their copyrights. They collect fees and make over 800 million € a year which they then distribute to the copyright holders. Nothing bad so far.
However, sometime in March 2009, GEMA decided it would be cool to take 12 cents fee for every single time a video was shown on Youtube when previously and elsewhere, rates of something like 0.1 cent fee per video streamed were more common. With the rates the GEMA has in mind, a popular channel could end up paying nearly 1.000.000 € per month.
Needless to say, there hasn't been an agreement so far, and german Youtube viewers get shafted. Sure, there's proxies, but not all of them work every time and it gets annoying to view a video via proxy everytime you just want to hit up that song to relax.
Long story short, you're german, you want to listen to some music via Youtube, bad luck. Better proxy that or don't bother at all. Oh, and did I mention that Spotify isn't available in Germany either?

I absolutely support this rant -.- proxies work ofc, but they're slow
|
Yep, this is pretty annoying. I use Grooveshark which seems to work just fine here in Germany.
|
Same deal in Poland. Maybe even worse.
|
Oh man, I have a few friends in Germany and whenever I send them songs...This happens.
|
I get these rarely in canada and I wonder what organization is behind it over here. People be stealing our internets And I'm sure you've heard about canadian's internet getting stolen. This trend does not bode well.
|
It's becoming like that here as well. VEVO has blocked most of their content already.
My workaround is that I search for the video and add "album" or "lyrics" at the end of the query, which works 90% of the time. Out of luck if you want the actual MV, though.

God i hate it when i see "Broadcasr Yourself" as a title when i open a video. Already know i cant fucking watch it. If i really want to see a video i use hotspot as a proxy.
|
I hate it soo much. hidemyass.com works though. Or grooveshark, as it has been said.
But it's really such a big pain in the ass. :S
|
Yeah, this is absolute bullshit. Whenever there's a thread on TL where people post videos I can't watch half of them or even less. That, in and of itself wouldn't be a problem if youtube hadn't so much easily accessible content. In a thread about music, art, science or even favorite philosophers there's always a good portion of youtube videos.
|
Maybe this isn't helpful but what about grooveshark? I know it isn't a video but you still get the song >.<
edit:Someone else already sugguested it, I reccomend it highly.
