MBCGame to shut down? - Page 78
Forum Index > BW General |
Keep any SC2 vs BW comments out of this thread. This is a thread about Brood War and Esports (Tekken Crash, Special Forces, etc) in general. If you discuss what this means for ESPORTS be sensitive about it.

This is really bad news in my opinion BUT, NO it does not break my passion for BW.. Most of us been watching BW via free stream or with cholera, klazart, moletrap, rise, nuke on youtube, You know what happened to the only channel that was asking money from us? you guys figure it out. With the growth and evolution of eSports, this is bound to happen to some of em, its sad to see someone as *established* as MBC take a hit like that.. Hopefully this is not a sign of esports in general going the wrong way... BW was still bigger then so many of em, imagine how the lesser one feels about that one, hopefully this doesnt stop the young folks to try that path, or else , this could be HUGE

The two big single leagues Brood War has are OSL (Ongame net StarLeague) and MSL (Mbc StarLeague). There was another single league run by GomTV but it died some time ago (because of KeSPA reasons and things that are not relevant). There are also some off-season single leagues now and then, but those are minor in the grand scheme of things. The team league (what we call Proleague) is run by both channels together MBC and OGN. There's 2 matches a night, one on each channel. Finals are on both channels at the same time. These news are important because MBC Game is a channel dedicated to video games. Besides the Brood War main shows (MSL, Proleague), MBC also has other shows like MBC Hero Attack (where TL Attack got the idea from), some shows were commentators play with players, an 'amateur' Brood War league etc. Besides that MBC hosts shows on other games like Tekken Crash (fighting game), Special Forces (Counter-Strike korean clone) and if I remember correctly other online games like Kart Rider (mario kart online basically). This means that if MBC is gone, first part of the infrastructure could be gone or re-conditioned for the Kpop music channel. They own a studio where the matches are played. Commentators could lose their job and people who work here. Some of the people could still work for the music channel I guess: camera guys, lighting, make-up, directors, etc. The name would be gone. MSL exists because beside the infrastructure it holds prestige, they have a relationship with KeSPA and teams (Gom league had the cash, but didn't have this). They also have a strong name, which lets them negotiate with big sponsors. So, I don't want to blow this out of proportion, because no news are final yet. But MBC Game closing down (or switching to another thing) would be pretty big for BW and pretty big for any niche Esports in Korea. quoting this because it's dead on.

Hopefully something more concrete in the future can absolve my fears. If not, then it's been a damn good run, MBC/MSL/Brood War.

Now I think about it, I have no idea why MSL is considered the inferior league. I much prefer the MSL format and it generally produces more entertaining qualifiers for me. Is it the prize pool...? Hope someone can shed some light on this. Thanks.

The reason why it's considered less prestigious is because MBCGame started WAY after OGN. Also MBC is a combo of channels, and I don't know much about korea, but if the name implies anything, OGN is just gaming. OGN is actually a subsidiary of On-Media, so basically OGN is just gaming the way MBCGame is, where On-Media is roughly equivalent to MBC. But yeah, OSL is considered more 'prestigious' pretty much cos it's older.

Liquipedia won't stream new games, Liquipedia won't scream 리버리버리버리버리버리버!!! You, sir, win 1 internetz. b'-')b I hope if MBC does in fact collapse on this, that someone else will pick up the torch. I though e-sports was just starting to get spread into China and they've been giving such positive news here in Korea for its growth (they didn't specify BW when they said it but I along with most Koreans assumed...).

Assuming that the news about MBC is true, OGN just lost its biggest competitor. If Koreans want to watch BW progaming, they all will go watch OGN.

But this "boost" of viewers may be short lived. Will OGN be "strong" enough to carry the burden of proleague all by itself? Or does PL formats have to change? With less games and less money involved into BW will the B teamers continue to dedicate their life into broodwar?

They aren't suffering ratings, not more than usual. It is just that MBC figured out that the rating will be higher if they turn themselves into a music channel, it's not a matter of declaying interest in the public. In fact, even if they turn themselves into a Kpop channel they can still broadcast 20% non-music content, which will mostly be BW and Tekken Crash. EDIT: Overall, it's a case of "We want more", not "no one cares".

I've been hearing for the past few years that BW ratings have been dropping in SK. just look at the crowds today compared to 5 or 6 years ago. I think it is at least partially a matter of decaying interest

Hoping the MSL doesn't entirely shut down, but it would kind of make sense that MBC wouldn't continue to support it if they're moving their channel away from that content.

last msl eh? Meh it really does reminds me that when I first come to TL it was 2003, and that is, alas, 8 years ago! How time flies.
