I got one with brown switches instead, I heard that they're like quiet version of the blues. It's really amazing to type on this thing after using a rubber dome for years. The keyboard is Ducky Year of the Dragon.

So my question is: is there a quiet mechanical keyboard? From what I read around, the blue switch the BlackWidow uses is the loudest of all. Does the brown switch significantly quieter so that it would not keep someone from going to bed?

Unfortunately, I am sharing a room with a roommate who goes to bed much earlier than me and he's complaining about the noise my keyboard makes. Does the brown switch significantly quieter so that it would not keep someone from going to bed? Something like this may help. It won't help with the sound from the blue switch but it will dampen the sound of you bottoming out keys. For switches, I haven't had any experiences with Brown switches, but if you want something quiet, you should look at Black/Red switches.

Yeah, Browns aren't something you'd call "quiet" but they're not as loud as blues. So don't go browns if you want a quiet keyboard.

There are various websites you can look at, mechanicalkeyboards is just one of the major ones. Amazon and Newegg are two other big retailer sites that sell mechanical keyboards as well. Are you looking for anything in particular with a blue mechanical switch keyboard? Such as does it need to be full sized or is tenkeyless (TKL) fine? Does it need backlighting? Budget? These are some things you should consider when looking for a keyboard. Quality wise most keyboards are just fine. Additionally I love browsing Geekhack's great finds section. You might find a mechanical keyboard on sale every so often, and with Black Friday/Cyber Monday coming up there may be some sales coming soon.

Neither will switching to brown switches as they're pretty loud as well when you bottom out. Blacks and reds are quieter, but if you really want to make sure that you don't bother your roommate during the nighttime I'd switch to a membrane keyboard for the nighttime and blue switches for during the day if he doesn't mind it. (its a plus if it has one but wouldnt want to pay premium for those, only would buy it if its the same price for the same keyboard with 1 having them and the other not having them) budget looking for something around ~$100. cheaper price the better, but i dont want the cheapest mech board around. i was thinking on the regular razer black widow, but reviews say they have lots of problems.

That weird "ten-key" is talking about the number pad, and with the "tenkeyless" they want to say that the number pad is missing. The arrow keys and Insert/Delete/Home/End/PgUp/PgDn are still in their normal position. That style of keyboard is also often called "87 key". There are "84 key" keyboards where the arrow keys and insert/home/etc. are moved and bunched up into the left area of the keyboard. There are no gaps anywhere on that style of keyboard. Full-size is "104 key". Those numbers are all for US layout. Other layouts have some added keys. There's also keyboards where the number pad is kept, instead the arrow keys and Insert/Delete/etc. gets ditched. You then use the Num-Lock key and the number pad for arrow keys etc.

CM keyboards fit into your budget pretty well since they tend to have lower prices than others. Something like this is one possibility you might be interested in. Rosewill is decent as well, but they've historically had some cable issues (I'm not sure if that's fixed yet not or though). However I'll still suggest it since it's an option. Note: I didn't go looking for the cheapest ones from websites, so you may find them cheaper elsewhere than on Amazon (although usually Amazon is cheaper or the same as other websites). Although if you were looking for backlit/macro keyboards for around the same price, what skyR posted is definitely great if you could put in another $15. I have a Ducky Shine 2 MX Blue switches for my full sized keyboard, and it's absolutely great all around. Ducky Shine 3 is just an upgraded version with better LED functions. $115 is most likely the lowest it'll ever get until the release of the Shine 4 sometime in 2014. I personally bought a CM Storm Quickfire TK for one of my friends and they loved it. The only quirky little thing about is the fact that it's both "TKL" in the sense and full-sized. If you look at the picture I'm sure you'd understand. It takes a bit to get used to, but a lot of people love it since it offers the smaller space that a TKL keyboard offers while still appeasing those who wish to use a numpad on the right side of the keyboard.

Obviously, I have no idea how it will feel compared to other switches because I never had a mechanical keyboard. Can anyone with reds give their opinion on how they are for SC2? Also, how should you clean it? I realize I can just used pressurized air like my regular one, but what about the switches? Do you have to clean them once in awhile? I wanna make sure I do everything I can to take care of it.

Even though I hear some other types of keys are better for gaming, I eventually decided on Reds, mostly for the sound factor. I live with other people so couldn't get loud switches. All I know is Sase uses red switches so they have to be good for SC2 I guess. The keys of my Saitek Eclipse II started to really stick which was annoying, so I think the reds should help a lot with fatigue that I have been feeling after playing SC2 for awhile. I wanna make sure I do everything I can to take care of it I just want to get this out there, but because someone says X switch is good for gaming or because they use it for SC2 doesn't make it good for SC2, it's just their preference. Although with that said, I'd note that black switches are probably the ones that get the most flak for RTS games since their resistance is higher than other switches. Red switches are just like black switches, but have lower resistance. However, if you want the general answer then brown switches are the ideal switches for RTS games followed along by blues and then red switches. I suppose people like the tactile bump from blues/browns for SC2 than linear switches like blacks/reds. If you got the TK you should have gotten a keycap puller, it's pretty straight forward to use. + Show Spoiler + If I remember correctly some of the keys use costar stabilizers (spacebar, enter key, right shift key, and the backspace button as well, not sure about the left side), but you'll want to ask someone else on how to remove them properly. I can remove mines, but I'm sure I'm not doing it correctly, as I accidentally broke the piece the stabilizer is attached to once (not the biggest deal if it breaks though). Edit (since I don't want to double post): There are some bundle deals with CM keyboards and mouses here. Credits to the OP for those finds.
